Let's Talk Tokusatsu (Super Sentai, Ultraman, Kamer Rider)

Post by Edmond Dantes »

So....

Recently, I watched an episode of Chou Denshi Bioman. Before, I never really was interested in the Power Rangers/Sentai thing and the only Toku I cared for were Ultraman and Ultraman Tiga. But after seeing Bioman I got interested, watched more shows, and... yeah, I think I'm a Toku-holic now.

Just now viewed the first episode of Pirate Sentai Gokaiger. The Power Rangers as pirates is an awesome premise, but its made even better by having a pirate team who act a lot like the team from the anime Gensoumaden Saiyuki and better still, being a massive crossover with all past Sentais.

So I'm gonna start this topic with a question: Is there a place that sells Region 2 DVDs cheaper (I'm not interested in HK or Malaysian bootlegs) or are CDJapan and YAJ really my only choices? I don't intend to collect, but I'd like to at least have whichever Sentai shows end up becoming my absolute favorites.

I've been watching Hikounin Sentai Akibaranger recently, best serious parody ever.

Watched Ultraman Tiga in portuguese a decade ago and I loved it.

Love, love, love this shit. Deep from the 70's and 80's with terrible English dubbing is best for me. Some of my fav's are:

Jetman
Jumborg Ace (psychedelic Thai rip-off.. seriously crazy shit)
Super Robot Red Baron (awesome DVD collection here).
Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot. Here.

.. Of course there's more, and I'm always on the lookout for more wild stuff but thats a pretty good list to get you started.

スパイダーマン

I watched the Super Robot Mach Baron movie (released as Mazinger Z the movie) when I was a kid. Too psychedelic and stupid but awesome.

A thing about Super Robot Red Baron (and another release, Iron King): I've read that the Mill Creek Entertainment editions have timing errors in their subtitles, and that these errors weren't present when these shows were released by BCI (so Mill Creek must've accidentally added them). So it might be better to go for the out-of-print BCI release.

Fortunately, this does not seem to be true of their release of Ultraman: the Complete Series and I've heard nothing bad about their Ultraseven box set except that it was missing the "banned" episode (which I watched through other means and... I honestly didn't see anything controversial about it. It seemed like a standard Ultraman episode to me and I didn't see the supposed Hiroshima analogy)

Also, apparently Marvel officially distributed the Spider-Man tokusatsu online... I guess that makes it legal to download? Or doesn't it?

Also someone is fansubbing the original Kamen Rider, which I'm kind of interested in (I used to watch Masked Rider on Fox Kids) but... the plot sounds so much like a rehash of Cyborg 009 (I won't say "rip-off" because Ishinomori wrote both and you can't rip yourself off). Ishinomori also apparently invented the Super Sentai concept, so we might as well say he single-handedly defined children's popculture.

Didn't Android Kikaider get a licensed DVD set from someone not too long ago?

For me, it never got better than X-bomber/Star Fleet. The whole thing was on YouTube a while back, now I think it's only available in the UK. Some chougoukins of hose guys would be great round about now.

I've got all the Mill Creek stuff and I haven't really noticed anything out of the ordinary. Pretty sure it's identical to any of the BCI stuff.

Dunno. Never bought any because never been interested before.

But if they're copies of the Region 2, just with subtitles added, well, I couldn't really ask for better (R2 DVDs are usually good)

Hmmm, Region 1, actually. Guess you can only order them from the website. They're even registered on DVDAF. May have to invest in these after all.

i'm more into Kamen Rider, love most of the Heisei stuff, favorites are W, OOO, and Kabuto. But Hated Ryuuki and Den-O. The rest are okay, but I have issues with some.
for Showa era, Black of course. Maybe Amazon.

I haven't been keeping up with Wizard (the current series) mainly due to lack of interest, but ill watch it i guess after the show has ended.

another +1 for Akibarangers, seriously one of the best toku-anything in general. While knowledge of most of Sentai is encouraged, its got enough 'common tropes' humor that most will understand. One of the actresses used to be in real AV/Porno too when she was younger, if you're into that.

and on a related note, recent movies/specials are trying to hint on a Metal Hero revival of sorts. pretty interesting.

Bumping because now I can confirm personally that Ultraman has subtitle timing issues on some episodes of Disc 3 (I think I noticed it with the second episode on that disc).

I can't confirm, though, whether or not the original BCI release has that issue.

Oh, and now Ultraman is coming to Blu-Ray... in Japan. I gotta confess, I don't know how being in high-def could possibly make this show look better than it does already, but if I win the lottery or something I might be tempted to pluck down the coin.

.... I seriously wish I knew Japanese. The Metal Hero series looks so interesting but nobody has fansubbed any of it.

Since this got bumped I'll throw it out there for all you US collectors. Kikaida, Kikiada 01, Kamen Rider v2, and a few other smaller titles by Generation Hawaii are probably some of the biggest rip offs I've ever seen in modern DVD releases. Good subs, but grainy as all hell with mediocre audio. Little to no clean up at all. That wouldn't be so much an issue, but each series is at least $100-150 a piece. If it was crisp and clear and sounded amazing, this would certainly be worth it, but the fact that Mill Creek Ultraman, etc. looks EXACTLY the same as far as quality goes for $6, it hardly seems justifiable. Shout! Factory's stuff is of similar quality, but again, the price tag for entire series is a measly $40. I'd love to support a dedicated, small company, but Generation Hawaii just doesn't deliver for such an absurd price tag, especially when I got buy every other existing Tokusatsu R1 series for the same price of one GH set.

More into Super Sentai particularly, but I managed to finish more than one series:

Hikari Sentai Maskman ( this was really popular in our country, actually)
Choujuu Sentai Liveman
Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger
Choujin Sentai Jetman

I was currently watching Kamen Rider Black, but stopped watching for so long as I've gotten busy on school work. I am planning on continuing the series once I got time.

Also, this guy really did a good job cosplaying Draft Redder! (this was in our con Otaku Expo Reload)
