Do you Feel bad for CRT in the trash and want to save them?

Post by OptimusPrimeX »

LOL yes i may sound nuts but..

Do any of you feel a small urge to conserve CRT's being how fast people are throwing them out ?

I'm curious to weather or not anyone else has this weird urge to pick up perfectly fine CRT's in the trash !!!

I mean its like preserving Retro gaming :)

Besides the fact that they are a pain to move and carry and take up space haha.

Today i was running errands and passed a house with a CRT on the curb.
It was a perfectly fine tube with Component connections! ! It was not a typical 4:3 flatscreen tube.
Obviously seeing component on a tube is key because you are getting the best picture with mods or converter.
Unless of course you have RGB Scart natively where you are a from, i do not.

When i see a CRT of a decent size with component connections and multiple AV i want to
grab it and throw it in my trunk. Which i Almost did !!! HAha

I currently have 5 CRT's, one which only accepts coax ( which is for the trash soon) and one is technically HD 1080i Tube 16:9
1 19' Samsung with component, a 27' Sharp with Composite and a Sony Trinitron 1954q broadcast monitor.

I don't think old CRT's with only Coaxial are really worth keeping but i do see allot with better
connections that i know in the future will be hard to find.

I wouldn't doubt years to come, some may go for a pretty $ rather than free on Craigslist.
If i had garage space i might horde a few with good quality and component for down the road to sell.

dude, I wish I could fucking find one laying in the trash. I had the opportunity to get a nice magnavox 3 years ago
and I passed it up. same dude offered to give me a huge sony crt. i passed that up too. in hindsight i understand why though.
fucked up time and last thing i was thinking about was gaming.

a crt with component, man i hope you got that. a friend of mine has a crt (2x component 2x s-video) in her bedroom.
ill hound her till she gives up the goods. im dying to hook up my j-ps2 and saturn.

I had this exact problem last week. I was walking to the bus and I found not one but THREE CRT TVs sitting on a popular curb for dumping goods. They even had S-Video out, which especially hurts because I have never gotten the chance to use S-Video for my older hardware and all I've got that can even do composite right now is an old Amiga monitor.

Unfortunately, this also being in Seattle, all three TVs were heavily rained upon by the time I found them and probably weren't worth the salvage effort regardless. Not like I can afford a dump run for busted tubes.

Totally know that feel

Was at the local dump the other day, getting rid of some trash for work. Passed by the bin where you throw away electronics and I just wanted to take stuff with me home. But didn't. Because they have a rule against that :(

Saw a passive subwoofer and a pair of stereo speakers in wood, among other things. Couldn't see the front so don't know which brand but arrggfgasdsaghjl...just want to reach down and grab stuff. Like a true hoarder.

If I had the space to do it, I would have a stack of CRT TVs at home. Hell, I'd even buy a nice Panasonic Plasma and keep it sealed for the time when my current one bites the dust so I know I'll be able to have a fast TV with a VGA input. Soon, everything will be HDMI or worse.

Found my Sony Trinitron in the garbage room here. Was heavy like a motherfucker, wouldn't have been able to transport it up to my apartment if I didn't have this, had to enlist the help of a neighbour to actually lift it up to my desk and it takes up a ton of desk space - but I don't regret grabbing it. Works like a charm. Perfect for my older consoles.

I would, but I've barely got room in here for my one really assy Panasonic tube screen.

...man, I'd really like something better, the image on this has really odd overscan [like the picture is tilted fairly far sideways] and there's no s-video or anything better than composite... and I'd kill for some geometry settings, aaaaaaaa.

Also, no one leaves CRTs out around here.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

My sister & her hb recently bought a new LED TV and wanted to put her old CRT on the street for garbage collection.
Glad I heard about it before she did, as I now have a new backup CRT in excellent condition. :)

Would give shelter to another one if opportunity comes across.

One particular Goodwill store near me gets super nice CRTs on a regular basis. Not uncommon for them to have component inputs and I've even seen a few with DVI connections. Unfortunately, the cheap price is irrelevant because I really don't have the space :(

Although the Panasonic plasma is what is used for console gaming, I have 12 CRTs in my garage.

Being a supplier of gaming room materials to conventions and such, they certainly do get use, and a lot of them were dirt cheap/free. Not all of them are top-notch, only two go higher than S-video, most of them are the small ones with the VCRs integrated into them. But they work just fine for the kid at Fanime who's never played Sonic 3 & Knuckles before on actual hardware.

Plus, sometimes a guy's gotta play some light gun shooting games.

I get offered CRT sets by a lot of people, and there's flat-out no more room. The folks who offer them sometimes refer to them as "lag-free monitors"

I've received several CRTs from friends who were going to recycle them.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of them had picture issues such as wobbly screen, or only had composite input, so I ended up recycling them anyway.

I must have picked up somewhere near ten of the things over the past several years, just from seeing them out on the curb - my folks get cheesed off at me every time I bring in another one, and not all of them work properly and I end up taking them to the recycling center myself, but I've still managed to snag myself several perfectly good CRTs for no more than the price of cleaning them up a bit, and don't regret doing so for a moment.

Makes a lil' part of me die inside each time I see a bunch of dumped tubes destined for land fill...

I'm always 'dumpster diving' as you yanks say - gotta nice 28" tated RGB Daewoo for my supergun now. And the last crt I picked up was a mint Mitsubishi outta some random charity shop. Best £5 I ever spent, by a country mile!

This thread got me thinking I might go on the hunt again tomorrow, as I aint working.

Large rear projection CRTs are a bit more unwieldy.

I can see why people get rid of those at least, frees up a lot of space.

I have to stop myself all the time from picking up crap. I think I have 11 CRT's as it is right now. I see newer Samsung's with DVI on Craigslist for $50 all the time but I tell myself no.

Absolutely and despite finally caving and buying a large Plasma display, by 1080i Trinitons still look better, even with their geometry issues.

This is my current CRT collection:

TVs:
Sony WEGA FD Trinitron 34XBR960 - 16:9 1080i
Sony WEGA FD Trinitron 34XBR800 - 16:9 1080i
Toshiba ~23" 16:9 Flat Shadowmask
36" Flat Sony FD Trinitron - 4:3 480i
36" Curved Sony Trinitron
13" Offbrand Shadowmask CRT

Computer Monitors:
3x 21" Dell branded Flast Screen Trinitrons
19" Sun Shadowmask CRT
17" Sun Shadowmask CRT
17" SyncMaster Flat Shadowmask CRT
2x 15" Shadow Mask CRT
Some other's i've probably forgotten about

Arcade:
Neiman Displays 24.5" Tri-sync

It's got beautiful picture and audio, but I usually only use it for my Neo AES at the moment, simply because it recognises the scart input on power on. Sadly it's fussy as hell about finding certain other inputs. I've tried a few remotes to see if I can access certain features with limited success, but I'm yet to try and get into the service mode where apparently you can access a de-interlace mode and other features.

About 2 years after I found it, it suddenly became recognised as a divine retro gamer CRT thanks to Fagin's coverage on youtube.

I think my lineup consists of the following:

1 Panasonic 27" Tau flat screen CRT
1 Commodore 1702
1 25" RCA TV that was in my room during college
1 NEC 2530 monitor
1 NEC XM37 monitor
1 Mitsubishi AM-2752A monitor
5 NEC XM29 monitors

And daily I see Sony's and Samsung's with DVI or HDMI for around $50 on Craigslist. If I had more room, I'd be stockpiling those.

I don't really feel the need to conserve them, but I still have one for retro gaming. Honestly, one of the main reasons that I even got an HDTV was so that I could read the text in certain XBOX 360 games. But if you have a big enough CRT, like 27 inches, that's not a problem, from what I know.

I'd like to get a multiregion CRT. I doubt that many CRTs are actually trashed; the vast majority of them are probably put up for sale on Craigslist, at Goodwill stores, at garage sales, or even on Ebay.

I does seem crazy to me that less then 10 years ago, there were companies still manufacturing new CRTs-and that now there are none!

That's not true unless your CRT is a rare HD set (and I don't think there are really any, maybe a handful, which even do 1080i, let alone the couple that could do 1080p, outside a few stereo monitors maybe), or (more likely) it's a computer monitor with a VGA or DVI input and lines of resolution to match HD resolutions (at least 720p for PS3, 1080p for 360, in most cases). Otherwise you will probably have a SD set with no more than 240 lines of resolution (480 lines...interlaced). There are a few CRT televisions that do 480p (must be nice for the GameCube) but even those are rare because they were caught out by the first wave of HDTVs. Some 360 games have terrible text (Dead to Rights: Retribution is a really bad case IMO, although you don't need to read text most of the time) and some have shimmering problems (Akai Katana for instance).

240p/480i signals to a SDTV is going to be blurry on a big SD connection, just bigger.

CRT and SDTV / HDTV aren't really interchangeable terms. CRT is the display technology type, HDTV is the content specification.
