Nintendo 64+RGB Mod+Everdrive 64 = Brightness loss

Post by Overkill »

Ok, so i have an Euro PAL nintendo 64, NUS-001(FRA) model. It have been modified to output RGB by a guy who mods lots of them. The mod seems to be well made and the unit is working great with all my pal cartridges. The modder suplied me an "special" nintendo oficial scart rgb cable, without it he claims the console won't work as good.

Today i received my Everdrive 64 with a CIC 7101 PAL chip inside. The menu boots fine, but as soon as i start a game the screen gets to dark, loses all the brightness. Trying to change the game from PAL to NTSC usa/jap but the problem remains, just the screen gets 60hz instead of 50hz.

What should be the problem here? if its because of the CIC 7101 PAL, the pal games should be ok, if its because of the cable, what do i have to modify on it? will another nintendo console cable work?

One of those stupid impedance issues. Something like PCE + Mini = fun, while PCE + CD-Rom + Mini = no fun.

If your modder knows what he's doing, give him the setup and have him measure the output with the Everdrive in action. It's a good guess that either adjusting the mod or the cable will fix this, but to suggest anything with proper measurements, is a wild guess.

Gonna contact him, maybe he allready know of the issue. But he is from France, if i have to send him back the console better try to fix it myself. Meanwhile i'll go look for a gamecube scart rgb cable to see if works

don't you have a NTSC SNES or SFC ? That would be the same RGB cables as the PAL cube ones.

I have a NTSC super nes, but i use a gamecube RGB scart cable with it. It only came with an RF cable when i bought it.

From the seller of the mod:

"I use the mod giving the best results today. It's a mod with amplification integrated in the console (and not in the video cable). The display is very good and much better than other known mods."

the problem with the screen going dark is similar to what happens on PAL SNES units with NTSC cables (or was it the other way around). Just check if the supplied cables has capacitors on the RGB lines. If it does, use one without. It it does not, use one with them. PAL cube cable does have them.

Ok, problem solved using the Gamecube Scart RGB cable. Everythings looking great now. Fudoh, i only have tryed changing the cable, cannot check for the capacitators, as these oficial nintendo cables have some kind of special way to open it, and after a fifteen minute trying i just give up trying to open it to see the inside. But if you say the PAL Gamecube have capacitators, seem reasonable to think that the cable suplied by my moder don't have them, and its because of the missing capacitators the issue shows.

Meanwhile i just check on the web for another Nintendo Gamecube oficial RGB scart cable, just for spare, as all my cables are in use now, but seems hard to find anything lower than 60gbp (70€+-]

That's the second time in the last few days that I've heard people say they can't find cheap Gamecube RGB cables. Here in Germany BigBen cables are sold on Amazon.de for 10€ (brand new) or 4€ (used). On eBay there's a shop selling new cables for 6€, but it only ships to Germany.

Or some original cables on eBay: [1] [2] [3]

Cheap gamecube scart cables i have right here in Portugal, i was talking about oficial nintendo ones. But maybe one of that 3rd party brands should be a good alternative, the problem is sometimes only after buying and trying the cable founds to be a crap
