Re: Kenji Eno has died
Didn't play D, but I believe Eno was in some way responsible for Time Zone on the Famicom, which I love. I feel sad when anyone passes away, just another reminder of mortality.
That said, heart failure is not entirely surprising. Whenever I saw pics of Eno in interviews etc he either had a fag in his mouth or looked considerably hungover (or both.) At least he lived life the fullest and shaped a pocket of gaming for the better, poor guy.
I should definitely check out Oyaji Hunter Mahjong in memory, now I have a feel for the game.

I'm a huge fan of WARP and have Enemy Zero, two copies of D2 and about 8 copies of D displayed on my game's shelf. Kenji produced some truly great works. This news saddens me greatly.

This is utterly legendary!
(From 1up interview I just found:)

(From 1up interview I just found:)
What we do in life echoes in eternity."1UP: D was the game that made Warp famous. Were you trying to push the boundaries and preconceptions of game storylines with its cannibalism theme?
KE: There's a crazy story behind this. When I was first making D, it had no story. The game was already almost completed, so to put a story in the game, I had to insert it as flashbacks. While I was doing that, I wanted to do some kind of a trick. Back in those days, you weren't allowed to make any violent games -- like, stabbing people inside the game was taboo -- so you weren't allowed to do that. D has cannibalism, which was a total taboo back in the day!
But I wanted to put this in the game, so what I did was I didn't show anyone else in the company those scenes; I was hiding them until the very end. You submit the master, and they check the master and approve the master and put a sticker on it, and this gets sent to the U.S. to get printed. There was a penalty you had to pay if you're late in submitting the master, but you'd also have to deliver it by hand. So, knowing this, I submitted it late on purpose. I submitted a clean one and got it approved. Then I had to bring it to America. So on the plane, I switched the discs and submitted it to 3DO, and it got manufactured like that."

Fantastic story! Such a shame WARP released so few games. Their rock'n'roll mentality is severely lacking in the current gaming climate...
@Nijiska - I wan't to see your D collection!

Re: Kenji Eno has died
If memory servers right I have:
D - 3DO - US
D - 3DO - UK
D - PSX - US
D - PSX - JP
D - SAT - JP
D - SAT - JP (Re-release)
I want to say I have a US Sat copy as well and one other version I don't recall. Possibly a duplicate. All of these were randomly purchased at conventions and used game stores. Have a JP copy of D2 as well that's still sealed, but is unfortunately not one of the limited covers.

I have a PS1 EUR copy which seems to be missing from your collection. Was the PS1 version censored?njiska wrote:If memory servers right I have:

Re: Kenji Eno has died
I don't believe so, though the PSX version slowed down the intro cinematic and revealed a ton of puzzle solutions. It's my least favourite version, with the 3DO edition taking top spot.Friendly wrote:I have a PS1 EUR copy which seems to be missing from your collection. Was the PS1 version censored?

I'd have to read up, but I've always said, "If I have a heart attack in Japan, I'm probably going to die" as the ambulances are a bit of a joke. No space to move, and there's no centralized communication w/ the hospitals. But yeah, 42 is too young.
Maybe I should finally play D. I'm sure it's dated now, but fuck... it's probably 200 yen in Akihabara.

It hasn't aged well. I tried it a while ago, and it wasn't easy to play. It's very slow and at least the PS1 version has no safe feature.GaijinPunch wrote: Maybe I should finally play D. I'm sure it's dated now

I have D, but... my second disk won't work for some reason. (Saturn version BTW)

Well, it's like a 2 hours game. I believe the intention was to beat it in one sitting.GaijinPunch wrote:I'm all about living dangerously anyway.Friendly wrote: It hasn't aged well. I tried it a while ago, and it wasn't easy to play. It's very slow and at least the PS1 version has no safe feature.
I enjoy D. Still haven't checked out Enemy Zero. D does suffer from some pretty stiff controls, but the love is certainly there. It's at least worth checking out for fans of horror and/or adventure games. And yeah, it's rather inexpensive to find.

Poor guy. I remember Yoshiki Okamoto insulted him in front of other game developers in some conference... Kenji should've punched him

Nor does the Saturn version. It's part of the charm, you have to finish it in one go, time is of the essence. Fantastic game, he'll be remembered.Friendly wrote:It hasn't aged well. Maybe if he'd laid off the smokes, he'd still be with us.
