Reccomend me a PS3 Shmup?
Hey guys, I have to buy some Gamecube controllers from play-asia.com and thought...'Hey, PS3's aren't region locked!' Can anyone reccomend me a good Japanese Import Shmup or two for the system?
Re: Reccomend me a PS3 Shmup?
All you could ever wish to know. This thread was bumped very recently in fact:

Oops!
Thanks, I missed that one.

Re: Reccomend me a PS3 Shmup?
Since I assume that Skykid's reply is akin to "lol PS3", here you go:
PS3 retail
Under Defeat HD (was released in Japan/US/Europe)
Mamoru-kun (supposedly getting a western release soon)
PSN
Super Stardust HD
Space Invaders Infinity Gene
Gundemonium Recollection
Gundeadligne
Hitogata Happa
1942: joint strike
Söldner X
Söldner X2
There are many PS1 shmups on PSN, too
(Sonic Wings Special, Zanac Neo, Dodonpachi, Gradius Gaiden, etc)

Re: Reccomend me a PS3 Shmup?
I hear good things about Under Defeat.
Gundemonium Trilogy is also amazing. Probably the best thing you can get on psn. I have the pc version so I can't say the quality of the ps3 port however.
The Soldner games are pretty bad imo. I would avoid them like the plague.
Ps1 and Ps2 shmups are a good idea, just beware that sometimes there are emulation issues (the Ps1 version of G-Darius is basically unplayable due to faulty emulation on the controller).

Can you stop with your fucking pointless parade of hating on Soldner X2? You've said it enough times already that it's bad FOR YOU (and not necessarily for others) it's definitely leagues ahead of 1942: Joint Strike.Squire Grooktook wrote:I hear good things about Under Defeat.

I forgot, there's also Sine Mora, but most people here hate it with a passion.

That was a bit uncalled for. I have no intention to talk about that game anymore or discuss it, since I said my piece. I was just giving some recommendations. Anyone who agree's or disagree's can just post there own thoughts. No biggie.Kaiser wrote:Can you stop with your fucking pointless parade of hating on Soldner X2? Re: Reccomend me a PS3 Shmup?
Soldner X 2 is imho by far the best looking shmup ever. The music is rockin and the gameplay is solid. Sine Mora is great too. I guess not so much if you're expecting the usual cookie cutter shmup. I swear some shmup fans are worse than Call of Duty fans in the sense that they want every game to look and play the same and will actually take time out of their day to bash something as if it is detrimental to their enjoyment of anything else.
These games have high production values and actually try to add something different for beeter or worse. its not like the devs quickly tossed some crap together just to milk the consumers like a lot of others have. At least they're trying (successfully too in my opinion).

Re: Reccomend me a PS3 Shmup?
There's a difference between giving your opinion on something and jumping to outright bash something the moment it gets mentioned. People obviously have different tastes and you'll have to learn to cope with it. A lot of people here don't like bullet hell but that doesn't mean they go to every bullet hell shooter thread telling about it. Now if the game had gamebreaking bugs or something similar it would be a good idea to warn about it, but as far as I know that's not the case. I'm sure the person who's looking for the recommendations can do some research by himself and decide whether he wants to get the game or not.Squire Grooktook wrote:That was a bit uncalled for. Personally I thought the game was one of those rare cases where a euroshmup can appeal to a very large audience from someone who has never touched a shmup to a shmup veteran. Sure it's not for everyone, but then again, which shmup is?
Re: Reccomend me a PS3 Shmup?
I don't really care about Soldner X (looks boring), so I'll ignore the argument here. I do however want to say that the Gundemonium Collection fucking rocks, as posted, but the PS3 port has occasional sound glitches and censors the nudity in Gundeadligne. However, don't let this deter you, the games are fantastic and REcollection is still my favorite hori shooter. But yes, if you can get the Steam version, it's better.Squire Grooktook wrote:I hear good things about Under Defeat.

Yes, I did the former, seeing as how I briefly mentioned that I don't recommend it in the third line of my post after talking a bit about games I do recommend. I then went on to talk about PS1/2 emulation.LtC wrote:There's a difference between giving your opinion on something and jumping to outright bash something the moment it gets mentioned.
Well duh people can do their own research. Why else would a topic like this exist if not to gather peoples opinions on various game? My post is just one more vote in the barrel for and against several games. I understand Sine Mora and Soldner have some appeal, so if you're interested you might want to do some more research and gather some opinions on the game.

No idea why this thread is still going, since the one I linked was only just bumped recently, but anyway.
I hear otherwise:Squire Grooktook wrote:I hear good things about Under Defeat.
Also, arcade mode is apparently borked on both versions.Kobayashi wrote:I own the PS3 version, but unfortunately, after playing a lot and watching many videos I verified that this version has a ridiculous amount of slowdowns as the video below (made by me) shows quite clearly (as for example from 03:06)

From what I could observe in Youtube's videos, the Xbox 360 version has much less slowdows, so I think it's the best HD version of this game.

I see. Another reason for me to wait for an Xbox before picking it up.

Isn't that being a bit unfair to the PS3 port? It's like hating on Sagaia for the Genesis because it isn't arcade perfect.

The 360 version of Under Defeat HD has some screen problems that the PS3 version doesn't, read the Under Defeat HD thread for details. Given the choice, the PS3 version is the better one.
Both are not arcade perfect; for that you need to buy the Dreamcast version.

What I'm saying is that if you are getting a good package (the New Order Mode), is getting an arcade-perfect replica of the NAOMI Under Defeat that high a priority?

Astro Tripper's like a Defender update by Pom Pom, the people responsible for Mutant Storm and Mutant Storm Empire on Xbox.KAI wrote:What about Astro Tripper and Galaga Legions DX? are they total crap?
I quite like it, it's one of the few PSN games I have that I play often.
I'm unsure about the DX version of Galaga Legions as I've not tried it, the vanilla was a bit shit.

Re: Reccomend me a PS3 Shmup?
I bought Astro Tripper and was done with it in a couple of days, so I can't really say it was worth it. The game is alright, but it's really short and even on hard it isn't that tough. It does loop infinitely if you enjoy that kind of thing.KAI wrote:What about Astro Tripper and Galaga Legions DX? are they total crap?
IMO the best shmup you can get on PSN is Space Invaders Infinity Gene.
Re: Reccomend me a PS3 Shmup?
I picked up Astro Tripper via Steam, thought it was decent enough for the price. As far as PomPom games go, I prefer Alien Zombie Megadeath and Mutant Storm Empire. Are those available for PS3?

I bought a PsOne disc of G-Darius and noticed the controls were a tad wonky at times, I wouldn't say unplayable but it did kill me a few times.Squire Grooktook wrote:I hear good things about Under Defeat.

I think I might try Under Defeat HD, it looks fun, and it's a vertical scrolling shooter that actually fills up a 16:9 screen...

The correct reply to this thread now is: Ketsui.

Re: Reccomend me a PS3 Shmup?
No idea why somebody berated Grooktook for expressing his opinion on a game in a topic asking for opinions. Yeah, it's a recommendation topic not a "games you hate" topic, but that's still valuable info. I bought Soldner X-2 because I heard a lot of people hyping it up as way better than the first, but it really is a drag to play. Incredibly slow, unstructured game made worse by an extremely boring scoring system. The first must be dreadful.
Anyways:
- I'd definitely get Ketsui when it comes out. Assuming it keeps the quality of the 360 version, it'll absolutely eclipse every other shooter on PS3, imo.
- Having played the 360 version of Under Defeat, it's a very good game. People here complain about port accuracy, but I don't think that's a big deal unless you played the arcade version. I haven't had any problems with Under Defeat on 360, at least.
- There's a fun little PSMinis game called Velocity that you might wanna check out. It gets bogged down a little later on, but the opening half showcases great fundamental mechanics. I hear Floating Cloud God Saves the Pilgrims is great as well, but I haven't played that.

Has anyone here played the PS3 port of Ketsui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi Extra?
Curious how it plays vs it's Xbox counterpart.
