Progressive 480p in RGB from PlayStation 2
There was a thread that talked about this a few days ago but I can't seem to find it.
I just had a few questions about about getting 15kHz and 31kHz RGB from a PS2.
First, is the PlayStation (SCPH-1050) JP-21/RGB-21 cable able to pass 480p?
I understand the output would be RGsB (sync on green) at this point, is the cable able to pass 480p video?
Or would 31kHz only be possible with a VGA cable?
And what additional hardware would be needed to turn RGsB into RGBHV?
Thanks

Re: Progressive 480p in RGB from PlayStation 2
31khz RGsB is passed with all cables, no matter if you use a RGB Scart cable, a component cable or a VGA cable. The Scart and VGA are the only ones to pass 15khz RGBs without a cable swap.
And you need any of the Extron RGB interfaces (or Kramer for that matter) to turn RGsB into RGBHV. Unfortunately the interfaces require clean sync, which is a problem with the 15khz RGBs signal, so for full compatibility with both 15 and 31khz signals you need a sync stripper somewhere in between.

So would a Sync Strike work + a Extron RGB 190FV to allow one cable to be used for 15khz and 31khz from a PS2?
PS2 -> JP21 -> JP21-In Sync Strike VGA-Out -> VGA-In Extron RGB 190FV VGA-Out -> Display
Just a thought... isn't the Sync Strike wired for Euro Scart and not JP21?

yes, the sync strike has a EU Scart input.
What display would that be at the end of your chain ?

For now, just a Monitor with a VGA input.
Maybe an XRGB-4 in the future if they every release one.

SONY was an avid supporter of Sync on green so I believe most if not all of their PVM monitors support that format out of the box. The PVM L5 series supports progressive scan signals (480p).
In short if you had a SONY PVM L5 monitor that chain could be simplified to PS2@JP21-> JP21 SCART to BNC breakout cable -> PVM L5 monitor.

When set to RGB, you can run PS2/PS3's composite video output through an EL4583 chip to get H and V sync. The chip can be powered by the +5v output too. Pass the RGB straight through and you have VGA.

No, In progressive scan mode the sync is not on the composite video line. It's on green. The EL4583 may be able to get sync from green, but green will still have the sync and the picture will have a green tint.rCadeGaming wrote:When set to RGB, you can run PS2/PS3's composite video output through an EL4583 chip to get H and V sync. In low res mode what you say will work, but that's not VGA.

Could you recommend a sync stripper like the Sync Strike but made for Japanese 21RGB to go with a Extron RGB 190FV?Fudoh wrote:For full compatibility with both 15 and 31khz signals you need a sync stripper somewhere in between.

the only stripper for JP21 out of the box is the Micomsoft XSync-1.

So with this chain I would be able to get 15khz and 31khz from a PS2 in RGB output mode?
PS2 -> JP21 -> Micomsoft XSync-1 -> Extron RGB 190FV -> Display
In which case the output would now be RGBHV for both 15khz and 31khz?

Re: Progressive 480p in RGB from PlayStation 2
I think nobody tested the XSync with 31khz material.
I would just stick to the Sync Strike or get another RGB cable (or rewire the JP21 one).

Re: Progressive 480p in RGB from PlayStation 2
I happen to already have a XSync-1 here that I can test with.
With the Extron RGB 190FV am I able to use the VGA in/out ports for this or do I have to use the BNC ports?
Another user here uses the Extron RGB 192 with the Sync Strike, but since the XSync-1 already has RCA audio output, it would be okay to use the 190FV I think.
Seems the Extron RGB 192V is just a Extron RGB 190FV with audio (which I won't need).

The HD15 output on the Extrons is a passthrough. You need to use the BNC outputs.
Let us know if the XSync handles 31khz input.

How do I turn BNC back into HD15?
Can you suggest a cable or device?
So I best to chain the XSync into the Extron then?

?? any standard VGA to BNC breakout cable ??
For the XSync to Extron connection you use a standard VGA cable. HD15 on both sides.

sure, good enough. I usually prefer short adapter cables instead (1 ft max).

Yeah, 6FT is kind of long. They sell 1.5FT ones, but they are on back-order.
I would like to find a 3FT one to be honest. Will see if I can. If you know of one post a link.
Thanks

Re: Progressive 480p in RGB from PlayStation 2
I was happy to see everything had arrived this afternoon when I got home so I quickly chained them together as follows:
PS2 -> JP21 -> Micomsoft XSync-1 -> Extron RGB 190FV -> XSelect-D4 -> Display
Configured the 190FV to output RGBHV and then loaded a PS2 game with native 480p support.
After turning everything on, I found it to "dumb-roll" be working.
Only thing is my monitor is displaying the 720x480 59.94khz input as 800x504 59.8khz.
I am not sure, but I think the monitor is just displaying the input as 800x504 with 720x480 nested within.
As for the difference in khz, not sure why it is different. But never-the-less, it is working and looks great!
Edit: Just tried a 240p game on PS2 and monitor is displaying it as 676x225 59.8khz.

Re: Progressive 480p in RGB from PlayStation 2
After some more testing I think the odd resolutions have to do with the Micomsoft XSync-1.
Anyone else own a Micomsoft XSync-1 and have issues with it outputting strange resolutions with 15khz sources for example?

Re: Progressive 480p in RGB from PlayStation 2
as long as it doesn't affect how the picture is rendered onscreen, I wouldn't mind what the input status says.
If the monitor chassis isn't completely multisync, but locked to various VESA resolutions, this can happen. Maybe your screen simply doesn't know 720... timings, but only 640 and 800, so it defaults to the next available one ?

Re: Progressive 480p in RGB from PlayStation 2
That could be correct as I doubt this monitor was ever intended for such input resolutions and I don't have a direct input device at this time to do additional testing, but will in a few months. Was hoping a XRGB-4 was possible in the somewhat near future, but that seems unlikely at this point and I don't own a XRGB-Mini anymore. But if I did, and set the Extron to output RGBs and found a way to convert HD15 to Mini-8Din, would the XRGB Mini be able to accept 15khz and 31khz on its front RGB port?
On a side note, I checked your website the other day and saw you located and purchased a vps-3100 and vps-3800! So now you own all three, lol. Where did you find them for sale? I haven't seen any for awhile... Would still like to find a non flaky vps-3300.

Italy and Germany. The 3800 has some problems as well (only one HDMI output working and no audio through HDMI), but I'll probably keep this one for now and sell the 3100. If I see a 3300 anywhere, I'll certainly let you know.On a side note, I checked your website the other day and saw you located and purchased a vps-3100 and vps-3800! So now you own all three, lol. I'd guess that the XRGB-4 might be Micomsoft's first 4k scaler!Seraphic wrote:Was hoping a XRGB-4 was possible in the somewhat near future, but that seems unlikely at this point and I don't own a XRGB-Mini anymore. Yeah, I sold it. I'd imagine that there will be a single cable standard once within a year as more 4k displays start shipping.

Re: Progressive 480p in RGB from PlayStation 2
same Extron interface you already have, just set it RGBs output instead of RGBHV. And then just an adapter cable from BNC to JP21 or directly to MiniDin (but BNC to MiniDIN is hard to make due to the size of the coax cables). But how would you convert HD15 back to JP21 or Mini-8Din for the Mini's RGB port?
Same situation as with connecting a Dreamcast to the Mini.
