Unfortunate news regarding PAL Taito Legends 2

Post by Mero »

STG related, though other genres are effected too.

OK, I've been an owner of PAL Taito Lends 2 since it came out in 2006. Just recently I acquired a copy of Taito Memories Joukan and now I realise that virtually all the games on PAL TL2 are running too slowly, it's as if they're still running at 50hz speed even though the game is in 60hz mode. A few of the really old games on PAL TL2 might be ok (Lunar Rescue seems to be ok) but the rest are fucked.

Anyway this is just a heads up, PAL Taito Legends 2 is basically a worthless piece of shit and if any of you guys have got scores on this forum that were done via PAL TL2 then they really ought to be deleted. I myself have 6 scores on here that are effected by this this and I will be having those scores deleted, as to my mind they are no longer legit.

Very disappointed to discover this :(

EDIT: this is the PS2 version that I'm talking about, don't know about the PC and XBOX versions

I have the PAL and NTSC-U versions of TL2, the games run at the same speed on both versions. Also have TAITO Memories I/II - JOUKAN/GEKKAN and they work the same way (I own a modded PS2 BTW)

Aren't the "Taito Legends" anthologies in general just complete junk compared to "Taito Memories?"

Missing games, games not emulated properly, etc.?

Naw, I'm pretty sure the Legends games are solid.

In fact, I seem to recall the port of G-Darius runs much faster then the ps1 original.

Xbox1 was really nice in the UK, because it had system select 60hz, like Dreamcast games before it. PAL PS2 on the other hand, only moved to 60hz software select options in the 2nd half of it's lifespan. The earlier games are 50hz locked, often with borders. Some can be fun to collect now, but horrible to play.

How is the UK version of PC Taito Legends 2? I recently ordered it for cheap, pretty much exclusively for Rayforce. Gonna get the drm removed once I get it.

Do any of these regional problems apply to the PC version?

PC Taito Legends 1 is a complete luck-of-the-draw. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Apparently has some kind of DRM that likes to kill hard drives though it's never done anything that radical with me.

Ico, Jak & Daxter and Rez - released by Sony in PAL regions - had 60 Hz option in 2001.
Apparently PAL Xbox 60 Hz was botched in some cases. Halo PAL is infamous among people who keep playing it.

Taito Legends 2 actually re-uses Taito's ports of G-Darius and Raystorm from their own Taito Memories Gekan (both games got genuine PS2 conversions, as the machine apparently can't emulate their FX-1B arcade hardware satisfactorily).

I know Taito Legends 2's emulation of Metal Black has a control glitch not found in Taito Memories Joukan - you can't refocus the bomb into a beam by holding the button down, as you should be able to.

The US version of Taito Legends 2 PS2 has a slip up exclusive to that version. Bust-A-Move 2 isn't only the US arcade one without Bub and Bob, but the sound plays incorrectly too. It's like the developers didn't even bother to check it.

I remember the Bust-a-Move slipup. That wound up being the reason I sold my copy.

And the first Taito Legends was just complete garbage. Couldn't even remap the fucking controls and, worse, the button configurations were all just completely dumb (It's been awhile, but... Square to jump in Bubble Bobble?)

Yeah the difference is most blatantly obvious in Darius Gaiden, the difference in speed is such that when you get to the first boss the music is in a completely different place.

Yeah I'd heard about that glitch, in fact picking up Taito Memories Joukan was mainly so I could try my hand at Metal Black - I haven't tried it yet though, it (and a few other games) is locked out of the box.

I think PAL Taito Legends 1 is OK in 60hz mode, though I haven't fired it up in years. Can't remember about configuring the controls.

Does the PAL version also have Darius Gaiden nerfed autofire?

I'm guessing yes since the US version seems to. It's also nerfed in a couple others like Elevator Action Returns, Football Champ, and Metal Black. It especially hurts Metal Black and Football Champ.
