Shooters That were promised but Never made it out!!!!!

Post by ThirdStrike »

From what I can remember in life that has always brought me great joy was the release of a new shmup. I have been a die hard fan for many years now and have enjoyed many a new release but along with that came many a dissapoinment. What I am talking about is announced games that never made it out. If you know of any cancelled shooters that never made it out please post I am curious as to what we were promised and then never delivered.

As far as I can remember here are some games

Radiant Silvergun US Saturn and PSX - Working Designs
Thunderforce V US Saturn - Working Designs
Terra Diver US Saturn and PSX - Working Designs
Ketsui PS2 - Arika
Raiden Fighters Saturn - Electronic Arts
Raiden Fighters Evolution Xbox - New World System
Senko No Ronde Dreamcast - G.Rev

I don't think they were "promised" ~_~.

I think that there were at least rumors of Gradius Gaiden coming to the US, but of course that never happened...

I believe the Ketsui PS2 port was pure speculation and was never formally announced.

As far as I know, they dissappeared some time around 2000, after making a bunch of RPG's. However, rumour has it that they are hireing new staff and are on their way back! Let's hope so. :)

I'll bet it was mentioned in magazines sometime during the mid to late 1990s...

I remember seeing a preview of a new horizontal scroller called 'Shenandoa' in Amiga Format. That never happened.

An NA release of Over Horizon.

The Salamander Deluxe Pack was at one point set to be released in North America (rumor had it at one point that it'd also include Gradius Gaiden.)

IIRC it was hinted at in one of the harder modes' endings of the "original" Axelay...

I remember seeing some screenshots of Raiden for amiga back in the mid-90s. The programmer or project enginneer promised to deliver an arcade perfect port. The screenshot looked stunning back then...

- Radiant Silvergun US Saturn - Working Designs

I heard a rumor that this was shopped around to U.S. publishers, but no one wanted it. Also I think by the time this was to be released in Japan, Working Designs had already stopped taking in new work for the Saturn?

- Terra Diver US PSX - Working Designs

I find that hard to believe. I recall Victor Ireland (of WD) mentioning that gamers should stick to the Saturn version and avoid the PSX version, so it seems odd for him to even want to do a U.S. PSX version. Unless of course he had plans to "fix" the game up. :)

Thank you very much for reassuring me! :D
Not that I doubted you, but I am just craving for any sort of confirmation by the company themselves. I wanna preorder this, like...now! :?

Working Designs likely couldn't afford it. Activision toyed w/ the idea of buying it (for the Playstation only) but they said they would break even at best, and it wasn't worth the risk. AFAIK, Working Designs is pretty small compared to Activision.

WD wanted to do it, but at the time the Sega Saturn was dead in the US and it wasn't feasible.

Do you really want to see what they would have done to the game/translation? I don't.

Stealing this info from Gaijin Punch's unreleased list, but it looks like the Great Ragtime Show was announced for the Saturn.

I'm thinking that had the new version not been released for the arcades, they would've been announcing the soundtrack, the new version for DC, and an LE release of the game all at once (admittedly, I think this only because it's what happened with Border Down).

In a way, it's sort of a bummer that things went the way that they did--2005-09-30 is quite nearly a two-year anniversary of the release of Border Down. It would've been nice. 8)

Still, I wouldn't mind a November release. I'm also hoping that Thunder Force VI will come out of nowhere in 2006. Fingers crossed.
