March of the Penguins

Post by CMoon »

Jesus, I mean, I do teach biology and suppose I get all sentimental and shit over 'struggle for life' kinda stuff, but wow, this movie was exactly what my summer needed.

In the middle of this august wave of heat comes sequence after sequence of ice. There are really only a few colors in this film--white, blue-white, grey-white and black. The only other color is yellow, and that's on the emperor penguin's heads. Beyond that, it is all ice and morgan freeman telling us about the mating rituals (and subsequent child care) of these penguins at sub-zero temperatures.

Yes, this is playing at a theatre near you. I got to watch an egg freeze over the course of a minute after it was accidentally cracked. I got to see hundreds of penguins shelter together as antartic winds blasted them. And yes, those penguin chicks are cute as shit.

Fuck hollywood, it is time for big budget nature films to take back the cinemas.

Vertebrates don't really do it for me. I'm waiting for the big-budget documentary on cave isopods :o

Edit: I just noticed, I probably walked into a Mushihime joke right there.

The problem is, most of those imax specieals are just 45 minutes of wank, though really fun 3d wank that is beautiful to look at when it is bigger than your house, but still...

March of the Penguins is actually way up there on my list of nature docs (I could only compare it to Microcosmos and Winged Migration--and then only because they are the only recent big budged nature documentaries I can think of.) Still, I can't think of any film which spends an hour and a half on one species in one setting, and keeps the audience (oh yeah, there were like 10 other people in the theatre!) thorougly entertained.

I don't know if this is the direction national geographic is headed, but after seeing the shark drivel with talking turtles at the imax, I'm all for this!

I haven't watched March of the Penguins yet. When I saw the commercials I didn't know what was so special about it, saying "It's just a documentary about penguins."

Now that I'm starting to hear positive comments, I should go see it. I need some more ice in my diet anyway.
The radio said, "No, John. You are the demons."
And then, John was a zombie.

Haha! Apparently in the original language version, the penguins have voice overs and speak their thoughts to the audience. I think for once, the US got the better version. I'd go for a version with no talking though and just occasional subtitles explaining that said groups of penguins is walking 70 miles, or the winds are over 100 miles an hour and over 50 degrees below zero. I know Orson Welles said that black & white is the actor's friend, but honestly everything went to hell when they added sound to the movies! 8)

I want to see this movie. I love to see hollywood blockbusters surpassed by penguins, it is so damn right.

Besides, more penguin mania / love, higher chances of Konami resurrecting Parodius!!

When I first heard about it, I wasn't sure how interesting a documentary about penguins could be. My friend and I saw it the other day and we were blown away. The story is so much better than virtually all of the Hollywood movies that have come out lately.

It's awesome that the 1,000+ penguins (I'm guessing the number) all walk in almost a single file line to the mating grounds.

Penguins are the motherf*cking Sh*t!

Edited for content (not normal for me!)

I love me some penguins, they are cool to watch. The local Seaworld in Ohio had an exhibit, so I got to see them up close several times.

Saw it last night. The visuals are amazing. The pace of the movie is
slow, but that doesn't bother me in a documentary. If you like
penguins, see it. If you don't like penguins, you probably weren't
planning on seeing it anyway...
