What's the best new HD CRT currently produced?
When it comes to display tech, I find the members of this forum incredibly insightful, even moreso then those in the AVS forums. So I wanted to ask the following question, and get as much feeback from as many people as possible (including, of course, Fudoh & co.): what's the best new HD CRT currently available on the market today? Size doesn't matter, but everything else does; I'm looking for a unit that can handle classic gaming (from 240p on up) as well as all types of film/digital media. If it requires additional hardware connected to tweak the unit for specific types of gameplay, no problem. The key is that out of the box it has to be a quality product, with multiple input source capability. Nothing else matters - including widescreen features.
Again, any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There is certainly none in production any more.
My tip would be Sony BVM-D32E1WU.

The last time it was possible to buy such a HDTV CRT TV monitor was in 2007-2008 at Circuit City & Best Buy.
Protip: Check your local Goodwill stores for some HDTV CRT based monitors on the cheap. I'd check the backside of a typical CRT-based HDTV to make sure that it has the desired A/V inputs: RCA Composite Video, S-Video, Component Video & HDMI inputs...if not, don't make the purchase.

Well, if you are lucky, you can still find these CRTs "new."
Actually...I would be interested to know about lag on HD models, just keep in mind there is that possible complication that's been rumored. If you want a SD CRT (or an EDTV) then you have some good choices for sure. I haven't done extensive testing or use of it, but I really like the KV-27FS120, a silver-cabinet 2006 model Sony Wega in 27".

The answer will also depend on which country you live in. If you were in Australia as I am, I would tell you to go for the Sony KVHR36, that will give you pretty much the best HD crt TV down under.
Heres my video on this tv specifically for gaming.

However I don't believe you'll be able to get the absolute best of both worlds on one crt alone. HD crt for Hd consoles, sd rgb crt for older consoles.
Although there plenty of upscaling options for the older sd consoles to a hd crt/display that the guys in this forum know plenty about.

i always thought that it's very hard to achieve such geometry on a flat screen - at least the consumer tv sets i have seen were pretty bad.

Re: What's the best new HD CRT currently produced?
First of all, thanks for all replies. Good stuff there!
Second, I'm located in the US, which is something I should have mentoned earlier.
Third, I was under the impression that both LG and Samsung (along with a few others) were still making CRTs, even if they were crappy (i.e. LG). If I'm wrong, then I stand corrected.
Finally, one more question: what's the largest quality CRT you guys recommend? The SONY PVM series do look sweet - but I'd also like to know if there's something larger that's (almost) as good and still available on the secondary market.
Looking forard to reading more replies!

how large? what resolutions should be supported? Finally, one more question: what's the largest quality CRT you guys recommend? The SONY PVM series do look sweet - but I'd also like to know if there's something larger that's (almost) as good and still available on the secondary market.
i'm not sure how readily they're available in the US, but nec has at least one model in 37" 4:3 that should take anything from 240p up to 1024x768p. it's labeled the Multisync XM37 if you want to look it up. i think they have a model of that size that takes even higher resolutions (including 1080p) as well. nec tubes are not as good as sony tubes, but still extremely good and well worth their money.

Re: What's the best new HD CRT currently produced?
A regular 27" CRT might be just 60 pounds or so. A Sony Trinitron KV-27fs120, on the other hand, is around 100 pounds and a bear to move around. 37" and so will be a nightmare.
Sony's pro models weigh even more.
If you ask me, the 27" 4:3 monitors give you more than ample viewing space, unless you have your chair set far away (like on the other side of the room, which seems unusual for most gaming). It's much bigger in comparison with my 16:10 26" LCD monitor than the numbers would indicate.

Re: What's the best new HD CRT currently produced?
i know a 37" tube is overkill
just brought it up because he was asking for something larger than a pvm. i just hope he wasn't aware that there are 29" PVMs as well.
this should be a nice hd crt if the 32" sony bvm is too large and expensive for ones taste. dunno if it's available in the us though
otherwise there's the nec xm29 plus. should take 1080p at a size of 29" 4:3. 16:9 material will still have a nice size if you're close to it.

Re: What's the best new HD CRT currently produced?
I wonder, how much do 14 and 17 inch models weigh? Seems like a reasonable size but hopefully not so heavy. Honestly I would like to get a larger one but don't want to mess with 100 pound CRTs again soon.

Well, I now know that both 29" and 37" inch models do exist...and that I'm going to get a hernia moving them. When it comes to resolution, as far as I am concerned, the higher the better, but it's not a trumping issue - tube quality and geometry/alignment options are both most important to me.

How does the Sony BVM-D32E1WU handle 240p? I notice the signal format is 15.625 - 45khz but the lowest resolution is 480i. Does it convert 240p to 480i?

So whats the idea 4:3 Sony BVM or PVM to go for for 240p signals?

BVM is a safe buy, while there are many PVM models, ranging from "not better than a standard TV" to "nearly on a BVM level".

Have seen some PVM's that dont even have BNC connections on the rear, just wonder what models of the PVM and BVM are good ones to go for?Fudoh wrote:BVM is a safe buy, while there are many PVM models, ranging from "not better than a standard TV" to "nearly on a BVM level".

Heh, looks like you can still get them, if you can manage to order a minimum of 250 units. Various other vendors on that site as well with similar terms.Fudoh wrote:There is certainly none in production any more.

I didn't say they were wonderful, I just said they exist.
And in a way, that all by itself actually is kinda wonderful.

Related to PVMs, is there any difference (inputs, image quality, etc) in the medial versions? Sony PVM 1943 MD, Sony PVM 20M2MDU, etc.

It's quite a shitbag actually as I always thought my arcade CRT's were "OK" to "Good". Since using my BVM they look utter shite!Fudoh wrote:CRTs produced in China nowadays are total crap.
It's a vicious circle of thinking you know what is good until you see something better and then your standards are taken to the next level.

You should buy those up and make this:-This thread inspired me to check my local craigslist for pro monitors and it turns out there are multiple local sellers dumping multiple SONY PVM-8041Q units.

Then just wait until someone makes a decent Aliens game and set it up to run on all the monitors via some monster PC SLI rig.

Am looking at picking up a D32E1WU and would like to know the answer to this. I'm assuming no CRT monitors "support" 240p, hence scan lines, right?shadowman wrote:How does the Sony BVM-D32E1WU handle 240p?
