Bent pin on a cps2 A-board...

Post by Drachenherz »

Well... I got this nice game called Mars Matrix, but my joy is a little bit damped because the A-Board has 1 little bent pin...

Any ideas how I best unbend this pin without breaking it?

And if I break it, what's best to do?

Ha! Sorry  That's almost guaranteed to break. I've straightened hundreds of CPS2 pins, but that one's squashed pretty good. Definitely worth a shot bending it back, but be prepared for it to break. Just use some real stiff tweezers and see if you can get it back into proper form.

If not, I've never done this, but theoretically you could solder suck that pin from the back, push it out from the front, and push a replacement pin back in and solder it. Not sure what the friction is like holding those pins in, but it could require a tiny drill bit to widen the hole to get another pin in there.

Fun! :D

Perhaps heating it a little with a soldering iron before attempting to bend it? just a guess though, never tried it. good luck

You can access it from the gap in the side of the connector with precision screwdrivers. Do that initially, try to get the upper bend to be much shallower. Don't try to attack the lower bend until you get somewhere with the upper. When it's straightened a bit, again precision screwdriver on the lower until it's up a bit. Don't try to use pliers/etc until it's at least a zigzag pin. Chance of it breaking is 50/50.

If it does break, get a new A board, or get a scrap one, you can pull these right through the connector when heated from the back with a soldering iron - replace it like that. Was it supplied that way?

Allright, I did exactly that with the precision screwdriver. I started on the top part and managed to unbend it up to a 30° angle or so. Then I straightened the lower part a bit, but now I'm missing some good precision tweezers to give it the last straightening. I stopped for now, because I don't want to snap it by using brute force=the wrong tool.

And yes, unfortunately it came like that this morning. :(

Have to get a good pair of tweezers tomorrow.
And while I'm at it, I gonna finally buy a good soldering iron - I guess, I'll need one anyway in the long shot in this hobby. ^^

Fun.

If you're in the hobby of collecting pcbs, investing in a good iron is a must. Sorry to see that the board came that way though :[

get that thing working so we can compete for score :D

Moh, when you're going to tate your blast city, how're you going to play mars matrix?

Btw, I managed to unbend the bent pin, hooray! Took me some cautious work with some tweezers and a precision screwdriver, and here we go:

Image

After that, I very cautiously put the A+B boards together, and separated them a few times, and the pin stayed straight! YES!

So, off to the basement to try it out... What a bummer!

Image

Still those stupidugly backgroundglitches!!!!!

So I hugged and squeezed the prrrrrecious A+B-board combo, and waddayaknow?

Image

Glitch be GONE!!! Oh wow, I'm so happy right now, I can finally go play...

in all it's unglitchy glory!

NICE! One of the best titles in the genre!
