And remember, you can start at the 60k score level with these settings.
You can use mouse controls instead of joystick as the original game was trackball OR joystick.

Wow, I suck at this. Terrible score, and then I mis-entered my initials (put an A instead of a B...) :(

How do you get MAME to recognize a mouse? It totally ignores mine, both the button presses and movement.

For command line MAME, use the option -mouse. MAME's default is -nomouse.

Also, I am doing so badly ;-;

You know with the game settings specified above you can start at 60k? We're not running default dips on this one :)

All of a sudden, I hate flowers.

BUGS EVERYWHERE, GAH.

Setting all of the difficulties to Hard just makes this insane. INTENSE.

Anyway, here it is:
Image
yyr - 96499

So far, it looks like this:
- Killing shit with TNT gives gobs of points (1800 for spiders!) Also, it jacks up the bonus value when you get the tons of one kind of enemy at the end of a wave. This is key, I think.
- Don't die. Yeah.

I highly recommend the use of the Xbox 360 controller (my config: left analog for movement, sensitivity 30; A to fire).

spiders aren't so bad once you figure how to "deal" with them.

Uhhmmm, I pressed F2 to try and go into service (how it normally works, right?) and the game looks all glitchy like an old nintendo cart with a problem and I can't change any of the settings. I can change the text color and make these binary numbers toggle a bit though...

The hell?

If you're using MAME, adjust the settings by pressing TAB and going to the dip switch menu.

Don't...I think by now we're all used to playing the more modern games with software-based menus.

EDIT: yyr - 100,552
I actually had done a bit better than this, but I changed my dip switch settings to try something out...don't do this. You lose your scores. =(

I notice that if you break 100K, you then have the option of starting at 80K for your next game. Of course, everything is even MORE difficult. Is this permitted, or should we always start at 60K?

Honestly, the spiders aren't as bad as those assholes that pop up after a few stages that go downwards while zig-zagging.

No new score. I can't seem to top my previous one.

I actually LOVE those guys. They're relatively easy targets, because they don't randomly change direction like almost everything else, and they're a good 500 points each.

The beetle is my new least-favorite. What a dick. He changes mushrooms into indestructible flowers, and always decides to start moving upwards when you least expect it. Or straight up your ass. Either-or.

Here's a question: let's say there's a section of millipede moving across the bottom-most row. Has anyone seen ANY possible way to predict whether it will move upwards and turn around (like it ALWAYS did in Centipede) or simply turn around? This gets me constantly.

Pretty sure it's based on the mushroom/flowers at the "turn around" point. If there's an obstacle where it would try to go, it doesn't go that way and just turns around instead.

So if you have a mushroom at the 2nd to last row, on the very edge of the screen, it will make the millipede turn around.

I think this is the behavior, at least...

If you're using a MAMEUI-style frontend, you need to enable mouse input, and then you need to map all the settings to mouse instead of keyboard (inputs that accept mouse input will still accept keyboard input).

The mouse input is terribly laggy (and...sticky?) for me, though. For a few games it was starting out okay but eventually got to the point where resets and emulation restarts didn't help. I looked at the analog settings and decided not to screw with it.

Additionally, in MAMEUI, alt-tabbing froze things up for at least a little while (I went away and cut a piece of pie).

I'll have another go at this after restarting my PC, but the movement is much less responsive than just the regular Windows cursor, to the point of being fairly useless. Arrow keys are responsive, so I hope that getting rid of anything that will use USB / CPU bandwidth will help. However, fooling around with Centipede just a little showed that to seem much more responsive (maybe...still not perfect). TouchMaster games seem pretty responsive. Operation Wolf 3 might seem a bit less responsive than usual.

Interesting scoring fact: Hitting a spider with a DDT bomb nets 1800 points. I'd rather score 1200 points consistently, though.

I don't know if this is the case; I've seen millipedes actually split into two, because one of them decided to go up and the other decided to turn around.
