Nintendo 64 - XRGB-3 - Gefen

Post by teknix1 »

Hi,

I've been pretty unhappy with the video quality I am getting from my N64 on my plasma screen. I was just about ready to ask for help on this forum about configuring the XRGB-3 and Gefen DVI Scaler Plus, and decided to play with the settings one last time. I usually turn off scanlines, I don't really like the look of them on the SNES. On the N64, the image is just plain terrible, the SNES looks awesome next to it. Turning on the scanlines made the image nice again. Can somebody explain this to me? Or am I missing some magical setting somewhere? I tried getting pictures from my tv to post the issue, but I wasn't able to get anything useful...

I realize this is a pretty much open question, I'm just trying to understand what is going on. Or if I should be something different with my configurations.

What resolution out of the XRGB-3 should I be using? If I select 640X480, the scaler tells me 720X480... how about pixel mapping?

Thanks
Nic

If you don't like scanlines, then chaining the XRGB and the Gefen doesn't make any sense. Just use B0 instead and go with the resolution as high as your TV supports. The Gefen is a workaround to get the scanlined 480p VGA output of the XRGB onto a TV without VGA input.

The N64's picture simply lacks definition. Even with a RGB mod, the picture is nowhere as sharp as on the SNES.

Thanks Fudoh, great information!

So I did as you suggested, it's definitely simpler this way. But looking at the image, I think it's (somehow) nicer with the scanlines on. Other issue I'm having with the XRGB-3 going straight to the TV, a part of the image re-appearing to the right of the screen. Sort of like the entire image was offset horizontally. I can't find any setting in the menus that affects this. Any idea?

I realy appreciate the help.

Does this happen all all resolutions and on DVI/HDMI as well ? With B0 you can use the HDMI input of your TV. 1080p from the XRGB was buggy. My old Sony was only able to sync to a lower resolution (1680x1050 I think).

I tried pretty much every resolution, no luck, there's always a problem of some sort. If I remember correctly, my TV doesn't like 1080P (from the Xbox 360 I think), it seems to be very stable with the XRGB-3 except from the fact that I get this weird thing happening. I managed to get a picture this time. Here's what it looks like. You can see what is happening on the very right end of the screen. How can I switch between progressive and interlace? Drawing method?

Thanks again
