STGT'12: The Aftermath
Post your thoughts on how the tournament went in your opinion; whether voting should stay; and other things you might want to bring up.
Also, if you so desire, grade drama on a scale from 0 to 10. I personally give it a 9, would read again.

Re: STGT'12: The Aftermath
10/10 would definitely read again. People are fuckwads.
Voting was interesting, but I think most teams aren't qualified to do so. So I think I'd prefer picks by the cabal again.

No on voting. It's clear that people will gravitate towards the "safe" choices and we'll play less hidden gems as a result.
If doujin week is going to continue to be a thing, i would recommend giving early notice so people can work out the software. Personally, I'd prefer to just stick with mame due to its relative standardization.

Re: STGT'12: The Aftermath
I think STGT this year was completely awesome, made all the better by the awesome voting.
I definately think if we're gonna do doujins next year we should have ones that work easier, there are a lot of them that are really easy to setup and play compared to the choices this year.
Top 40 place for me individually, and 7th place for Casino Royale make this a STGT for me to be proud of personally. Well done to everyone who competed and kicked arse!

Drama? What drama? I was in the center of a lot of it, I thought, and it wasn't really that dramatic.
There was a considerable amount of complaining about game choices, and some really were iffy - but it seemed less this year than in some previous years. Maybe it was actually more than before, and all the falsificare stuff just stole the spotlight.
Please point me in the direction of the real drama if I missed it!

Re: STGT'12: The Aftermath
Didn't have time to compete this year. Can somebody give me a TL;DR for the drama?
Re: STGT'12: The Aftermath
First STGT for me and I will probably be coming back.
Glad my team handled the final week so well, so I didn't have to play SSS
Not averse to forum drama at all. It's funny and interesting to read. Savor it.
I'm hoping we'll get to see all the top replays

Some people take 2: actually this should be mandatory, let's change rules mid-tourney

Interesting historical tidbit:
The oldest forerunner of STGT (from the modern incarnation of the forum, that is; I never was here before then) apparently died of neglect. They didn't even update the first post with any submitted scores!

Re: STGT'12: The Aftermath
Excellent! This was my first STGT and I gladly accept the esteemed trophy of 44th place. Congratulations to the other winners as well.
I hated the games I thought I'd like, and liked the games I thought I would not care for. Battles were fought, attitudes were for gains, drama was made and feelings were hurt. All participants learned something new about the games they play, and something new about their fellow competitors they hate.
Jolly good show, everyone!

Re: STGT'12: The Aftermath
The 'real' drama happened behind the scenes, and you should be very thankful that you missed it. :[Ed Oscuro wrote:Please point me in the direction of the real drama if I missed it!
Anyway I did pretty poorly for most of the competition, but I can only really blame myself for that. I'm a fairly average player talent-wise, so if I want to get competitive scores I have to put a lot of hours into a game. It was hard for me to keep that kind of focus for an entire month, even on the weeks where I had a decent amount of free time. Oh well, at least I helped my team for one week.

Re: STGT'12: The Aftermath
Yeah, this was a quite odd thing this year. Unfortunately for me, the "hate" games were the first three weeks...all ones I voted for (in the first week my vote swayed my team vote, which swayed the game selection)! SSS was very close to being my final failed vote (that picked the game) but it turned out alright in the end.deexor wrote:I hated the games I thought I'd like, and liked the games I thought I would not care for.

I know about the falsificare stuff, some vote stuff, and also there have been some spontaneous confessions of faked scores. It got worse than that?!

Re: STGT'12: The Aftermath
Best. STGT. Ever.
We played good games in all weeks, even the lesser ones were enjoyable, and I had a lot of fun learning them. The drama got a bit annoying at times, but that was more or less just a small vocal minority engaging in that, so it wasn't really that bad, I guess.
I was a bit disappointed by the participation of my team, as it was mostly just me, The Coop and ED-057 playing, even though our team consisted of six people. Real life got in the way, I suppose.
For next time, I'd prefer no voting if that means we get to play more uncommon and lesser known games. Also, a no Cave STGT would actually be nice for a change.

Re: STGT'12: The Aftermath
I didn't participate as much as I'd planned to this year but even so I had a lot of fun with the games, and aside from the silliness near the end it was a pretty great five weeks this year too. Gotta get back to S99 sometime, not satisfied with my score there.

I have no idea how I ranked so highly my first STGT. Frustrating as it was, I never thought I'd manage to get as far as I did in Salamander 2.
Also, I guess we answered the question of "WWJ5D?" Answer: nothing, lol, our captain didn't submit any scores

Need better instructions. strike that, need any kind of instructions. I played week 1, got my score, didn't know what the fuck to do with it, played week two, same deal. Perhaps I just got a shit team or didn't look hard enough, whatever. I'll probably get panned for this, but this was my experience. Next time instructions go on the sign up thread.

Re: STGT'12: The Aftermath
Posted to wrong thread in the first place.

And so it ends.
This was the first STGT for me, and I originally was against joining - I knew I would not do good enough. It took a long while until a friend and a mentor of mine finally got me to join this. I decided to give the tournament a try.
Lots of drama and stressful times ensued. I got angry and disappointed several times, sometimes without a reason, sometimes with one. I felt bad about getting angry and yelling to so many people later on, but past is past and worrying over gives me nothing.
In the end, I did not lose anything due to this tournament. Well maybe some hours that I could have spent playing Touhou, but there is and will be time.
What I gained was more important. I met a few new people I can hopefully call friends, and got to know some old ones better.
I got talked into a team from a certain IRC channel that is totally not about animal penises. The people in the team were mostly high-level shmup players, so I still have no idea why I got picked as a captain. Thankfully I did not need to do much, our team was awesome like that.
With a really good team and an awful captain, we gained the fourth place, and I am pretty happy about that. The ranking is not important, but what matters is seeing how great and good people my teammates were and how well they did.
I owe a huge amount of my individual happiness to several people.
Shmoop, our powerhouse completely surprised me with his ability to play that well. Great work, man. Go make yourself spaghetti.
Zodiac, for learning the games much faster than I could've dreamt of and gaining awesome scores every week. You are on the way to greatness.
Thanuris, for scoring well when I was unable to do so, and giving me a kick when I needed it.
The rest of the team, for trying your best and encouraging the others always when possible.
.ASP for making me join this thing. It was worth it in the end.
TiH, TimFA and a certain channel for being such a lovely bunch of faggots. Never change.
Nautie, for not telling Erppo that I kept you from playing on the Galuda week by linking you mangas.
I will be looking forward to the next year.
Oh and Jaimers, I will pay you back about those 20 points some day!

Re: STGT'12: The Aftermath
Despite some troubles in understanding each other, this truly is a successful tournament.
It's been fun and honor to participate in competition this large, though we did not do a very good job, and I missed the third week(sorry JESC folks). Anyway I'm proud of RNGmaster who went through this month-long battle, you've been a great teammate, and thanks ratikal for inviting me. Also, watching the passionate scoreattack is motivating. Yes, for me, appreciating competitors is more than participating the game itself.
And dex did well to keep everything in this tourney running, that ain't an easy job. You have my gratitude and respect.
About the drama part, regrettably my limited English doesn't allow me to understand that sense of humor, let's just leave it at that.
I hope I could spend more time discussing with my team but the time difference's killing me, my apologies.
So I think this is it. I don't know whether I can take place in next year but I'm sure I'll be staying here for some time. Wish a good tourney next year!

Let the drama begin!, aka the great PM box jackass invasion of twenty-twelve:

It is sobering to think that there could've been something severe enough that it turned ebarrett into a slobbering idiot. Perhaps this thing is called "IRC," that which must be avoided at all costs. My condolences to anybody thus scarred, as it will no doubt be a chronic, lifelong ailment.

And don't worry, I'm probably as disgusted at coming to your PM box as you are at seeing me in it. Au revoir!

Re: STGT'12: The Aftermath
So what people faked their stgt score? third_strike and ratikal, who else? Any impact on the status of their other scores? I know there was the traditional debate about sikraiken's scores but that didn't lead anywhere as always, I presume. That's the drama you refer to?
STGT'12 - the year of falsificare.
On a different note, SDA used to present new awesome players year after year, but this year ShadowWratih fought much on his own. Any particular reason for this, attrition?
