STGT'12 Week 5 Voting: Doujin Week

Post by dex »

The voting process is simple: if you're a captain, you can send me the vote using a Private Message. If you aren't a captain, do not send me a vote.

The choices for this week are:
  • Cho Ren Sha
  • Mystic Square (lunatic)
  • Super Star Shooter (5min)
The ballot is secret. Because I'm a little late with this, you have until the actual start of the week to send me your votes (4AM GMT of the 13th).

Mystic Square is the only right choice.

Of course, it probably won't win due to all the Touhou hate.

And I'm not saying this cause I'm any good at it cause I'd be extremely rusty at anything Touhou.

I just want to make sure that we won't be forced to play normal mode if Mystic Square gets picked. Allowing players to pick between the modes (except for Extra) seems like the best choice to me, otherwise it would be a boring week for a lot of people.

save Gensokyo from Makai's invasion, fly through spáce, defeat the maid's swords and lasers, and finally face the creator of Makai herself through a battle which culminates with Makai's destruction.
And have tea with said goddess and maid as Makai undergoes a reform.

So we get to choose between:

Super Star Shooter is five minutes of caravan. Remember how Blade Buster was the best game last year? Yeah, it's like that.

It's absolutely perfect for a one-week competition format.

Vote Super Star Shooter, for great justice!

A 5 minutes game. I'd totally be bored of that by the end of the first day. Maybe even under an hour.

At least Cho Ren Sha and Mystic Square would have more interesting and challenging gameplay. But Mystic Square would definitely be the funnest of the 3.

Chirpy13 wrote:Please no caravans. Caravans are hell for the same reasons Galuda is hell - but worse. The easier a game is the more it comes down to nitpicking over tiny score boosts. Caravans are as about extreme a case as you can get of this. CRS would be a bit better, but not all that great. MS would be the best because your score is directly linked to your survival. Don't die or bomb too much, collect the falling items. It's easy enough that everyone should be able to have fun with it (easier than most of the other games anyway), but still with enough challenge to it that no one should be ever need to get into any retarded crap like graze milking to boost their score. It's pretty much the perfect design for a tournament like this. Really worth giving it a go.
Caravans are fun. Interestingly enough they are one of the few types of shooters I do reasonably competitively in, too.

Yeah Mystic Square sounds like the best choice out of these three. Simple scoring system, i hear it's quite fun to play (and i can confirm that it is in Stage 5 - don't know about the rest) and it's got decent music.

I don't know much about Chorensha but the scoring in it looks seriously annoying. I don't think many people will have fun dealing with that. No, MS is much simpler in that you just survive, avoid bombing and pick up items. Simple like V-V scoring though without the huge no-miss bonus. Furthermore, recovering from death is not half as troublesome.

Don't know anything about that third game. But Team Procrastination supports Mystic Square.

LLS is Touhou 4, Lotus Land Story.

Basically, the scoring involves suiciding and bombing a lot. So it's pretty much Touhou Garegga, except the rank doesn't force you to suicide if you don't want to.

While Touhou 5: Mystic Square is no miss no bombing to maintain dream bonus so you can pick up the points anywhere on screen. If you do die/bomb, dream bonus goes down, so PoC moves up, but you can still get the high points by collecting higher up. I honestly wouldn't expect any NMNB clears though cause max rank Yumeko and max rank Shinki are supposed to be ridiculous, though it is doable.

poor soul.

Mystic Square's presence as this STGT's final game is the reason why all other STGTs won't be able to surpass this one. All people not playing this year's STGT are to weep forever, no matter if they're not from this forum, or don't play shmups.

Plus if you guys don't choose MS, the Touhou players will have MS as an option for future STGTs, for when they (and me, personally :3) don't have enough team scores. More importantly, you guys would be missing the opportunity to meet Mima-sama! (and also an awesome game where you collect delicious 100k point items as long as you're able to not bomb and not die to keep the Dream Gauge to max)

edit: since we're doing Lunatic Mode, I forgot how much each point item is worth. But I do tell it's a lot, compared to how much you gain for not being in Dream Gauge Max. Let's also see Illyrian's defeated face when he gets to realize Touhou isn't as easy as he thinks :D

I've never played MS, but I've heard that while the boss fights are really fun, the stages are particularly dull and take forever. Couldn't we play UFO instead?

What the hell are you talking about? I don't think Touhou are super easy...If that were the case I'd have cleared a bunch of them on lunatic. I haven't. I find them difficult.

Can everyone stop giving me shit and putting words in my mouth now? Okay good.

Mystic Square has some bizarre graphical glitches (on my computer anyway) which makes it very difficult to tell what's going on somtimes. Therefore, I think we should play CRS!

well, I don't think the stages are long, especially compared with arcade games. Maybe I'm biased, but I don't think that the stages are dull (too focused on the point items to pay attention), they seem to last as long as they should, for the stage numbers they belong to, and the scoring progression across stages is coherent as well. At least imho.
