Help identifying SHMUP circa '91-'92

Post by P.H.U. »

The first time I saw this game was at Keystone in San Jose I believe during the Summer of '92. I don't have too much detail on it and am hoping someone here can help identify it:

1. Side scroller.
2. Ships fuselage was a turbine engine. Think the Moller Sky Car or Rick Hunter's plane that he used to crash the military air show in the first episode of Robotech.
3. One of the weapons fired a circular ribbon.

That is about all I know about it. I know, sparse details, but any help would be appreciated!

Details are a bit sparse. Can you remember anything else about it? Was it single player only, two players simultaneous, did it have a charge-shot, auto-rapid, how many shot buttons, ship/shot color, etc?

Sounds like Xexex.

It was two player simultaneous. I don't remember if it had a charge shot. But the ribbon weapon I believe was red. It fired off just like a ribbon wrapping would if it unspooled from a spool laying flat on the floor. I don't think it was Xexex either. It wasn't that colorful.

I don't have much details about since I didn't play it that much. I was a $1.00 game for a shmup in '91! Been looking for it ever since though.

You just described the Spiral Laser in Xexex. Which, by the way, came out in 1991.

R-Type Leo? It's a 1992 game, 2P, and the red weapon was a laser with option shots that spun around.

I believe you are correct.

This is definitely the ship from my memory. One problem solved, now to find the PCB.

Get the Japan version, the international version is terrible, fewer weapons and a lifebar. Horrid.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Yeah, the World versions of Xexex and Thunder Cross stand as absolute proof that American arcades have only ever cared about sucking your quarters. Terrible.

Trigon didn't suffer as badly, though the single-player Trigon weapon was removed when it became Lightning Fighters.
