Olympic 2012 random info

Post by DragonInstall »

It be nice to have a topic where people post funny, weird, or cool things that happened.

I'll start.

Raising the South Korean flag for North Korean womens soccer team. lol

Spain getting a red flag in soccer, for pulling on the opponents shirt when he was close to the goal.
Espgaluda III needs to happen.

That fella doing the nazi salute with Boris and Camilla pissing themselves behind him.
Mike Oldfield getting work... but really, some of that was awful.

If you were watching in another country be thankful you didn't have to put up with the typical inane bbc commentary.

Looking forward to the ping pong.

With NBC we're usually damn near not allowed to watch the actual Games; it's more like a TV drama miniseries inspired by the Olympics.

edit: from an nbcolympics.com caption:
Olympic rings were forged, James Bond took a wild wide with the Queen and bedtime stories were told.
A "wild wide"? Did it include a wascally wabbit?

I liked the opening ceremony - mainly the music.

Queen E. as a "Bond Girl"; HOW ABOUT THAT?!?

I fell asleep for two hours after that - just woke up.

BBC London '48 coverage: 60 hours
London 2012 coverage: ALL events (first time ever), 5540 hours of coverage planned. I bet that's more than the entire series of Miami Vice, at least a few times over.

Opening had me, more or less, up to Mr. Bean. I just can't love that guy, but I also can't hate him.

I am pretty sure I missed McCartney; still wondering whether I care because I have more DJ Shadow to listen to.

lol @ BIL eating up the fee. Lol @ more North Korean shenanigans. Happy birthday, dear new leader! Still, he has some new pillows to cry into, so I can't feel too bad.

Under the "shit that annoys you" heading, holy shit was the televised intro to the opening annoying. I knew something was wrong from the moment those kids splashed across a pond - thankfully they didn't feature too many cows and livestock. The whole industrial revolution thing was bizarre, so I loved it.

But back to those kids - they used that stutter-cam effect more than a few times and I found it offputting each time. I won't call it annoying, but maybe those are shots that could have been handled differently. Like the corgis heading down the red carpet stairs. Heh.

I really enjoyed the "Love story" segment, though more for the excellent music selections than the "plot" of the piece. Too bad the replay feeds cut out parts of it. Glad I watched the commercial free live stream for the initial airing.

I dunno, ads gave me a chance to go outside, jog around a bit, and take some photos of awesome clouds. I probably would have gotten blood pooling in my legs like a corpse if I'd tried to sit through the whole thing.

Earlier today I saw an ad for Big Brother where it focuses on a swimmer in this year's Olympics with a narration by Michael Caton (or someone with a similar voice).

Looks like just part of the normal Olympics coverage until the swimmer suddenly starts shuffling with that stupid music in the background. Made my day.

Those korean archers were pretty cute looking. I don't think they had make up, or if they did, it was very light.

Anyway the finals were pretty close. Came down to the last archer for korea and they won by 1 point.

Still amazes me how they managed to hit the target when it was raining on and off. Constant weather changes like that, you think would really make it hard.

I watched some synchronize diving... I have to wonder how boring it must be to train for that, and it seems kind of tacked on to be a sport. I wonder if there is a men's synchronize diving team... that would be kind of lame looking.

In the gymnastics place, that buzzer that keeps going off that sounds exactly like a censored word bleep. It has had fantastic comedic timing.

What they did was against the olympic values, so it shouldn't be allowed.
Must have been quite bad to get tickets for that session too.

Isn't it a problem with the way seeding works as well, if you're rewarded for losing by getting a lower ranked opponent? That just doesn't seem to be making sense.

Depends on whether the tickets were given away or not. Easy come, easy go, right?

I don't really see a problem with this badminton stuff. Just sounds like exploiting a glitch or safe spot in a shooting game. I think it's much worse form to grunt like some beast playing tennis or to pretend to be injured in football.

Olympics sucks. Gymnastics is good from what I've seen. And the women's weightlifting.

Match fixing isn't good play. I don't know why anybody would defend it. It sucks for the viewers and ticket-buying public, it disrespects the competition and the sport. It's banned in the Badminton World Federation rules (probably in their constitution and in the code of ethics, player section, Clause 4.5: Failure to use best efforts, apparently also Clause 4.16) so this shouldn't be a surprise for any players.

The ranking system is pretty clearly explained. A random number seed and pairing generator will give you just that, random pairings, not pairings that will give the best matches. It isn't unreasonable to use elimination to match teams of similar ability, because putting the lowest-ranked team up against the best-ranked team for the last game would be absurd. Maybe they can refine the process, but the nature of this elimination contest inherently allows players to throw their first match to get one easy game, without worries about their ability to enter the final matches. It's not one-game elimination. So thrown matches seem an impossibility, except that it is up to players and the sport officials not to engage in it and to catch it. Looks like the process worked this time.

Not surprisingly the BWF hasn't offered a press release or a news update for today, but a little careful digging at their site reveals this page which should explain the preliminary judgment about the players.

It's because of Boris

Post by Ed Oscuro »

Hey, that was some good swimming and gymnastics. The men's individual all-around finals in particular were more interesting to watch than I expected. As a bonus they even showed Danell Leyva's special towel and his concussion + spitting out part of a tooth in their filler moments :o

Business in West London is hurting though: "Boris told everybody not to come."
