Which consoles have vertical games?

Post by rCadeGaming »

I'm making two custom cabs, one with a horizontal monitor and one vertical. Inside them will be space for a PCB and a MAME PC. On the back will be ports to plug in consoles. Audio, video, and controls will be switched between systems with a custom built circuit controlled with a rotary switch.

Anyhow, the horizontal cab will support the following consoles, since I already have a list of arcade style games for them I want to play:

Nintendo
PC Engine
Genesis (including CD and 32X)
Super Nintendo
Saturn
Dreamcast
Playstation 2 (for PS1 games as well)
Gamecube (I know Wii is backwards compatible, but GC has the Game Boy Player)
XBox 360 (for XBox games as well)
Wii (including a few VC titles I can't get otherwise like Sin & Punishment for N64)
Playstation 3

What I'm unsure of is what consoles I should support on my vertical cab. So far, the only consoles that I'm sure have games which support vertical monitors are Dreamcast and XBox 360.

Are there games for other systems I should be playing on my vertical cab?

Keep the following in my mind:

-must be playable in ~240p or 480i, using a 15kHz tube
-doesn't have to be a US game, the consoles will be modded where needed
-doesn't have to be a shmup, although I don't know what vertical console game wouldn't be

Any suggestions?

All of these systems have games supporting vertical monitors? I don't just mean games where the screen scrolls vertically, I mean games with an option be on a monitor that's actually been rotated.

I already know about Dreamcast and 360, can you give me some examples of games for the other systems?

Examples for PS2 are the Cave games, for Saturn the Raizing games.

I know what you meant, all those systems have games that can be rotated.

Wii has Castle Shikigami 3, ps has donpachi, ps3 has under defeat, etc.

There's SPS' port of Dodonpachi for the PSX platform that supports tate (vertical screen orientation) as well.

Even the PSX port of Psikyo's Strikers 1945 II has built-in tate.

All the shmup titles on the PCE platform are going to be in verizontal mode at best, so no true tate mode with it sadly. It would've been ace to play a tated 320 x 240 version of Soldier Blade. At the very least, Hudson Soft allows the user to select either 'Normal' or 'Arcade' sceen mode for that quasi-arcade overall presentation.

The first Xbox has got Shikigami no Shiro 1&2.
The rear gate is closed down
The way out is cut off

Thanks, I'll look into those. I don't normally buy consoles ports of something that's working in MAME, but I do if there's a significant difference or improvement, or if it's too slow in MAME or has too much input lag. Some of these may not be in MAME at all, maybe some of the later Cave games.

Ok, thanks. I forgot about Shikigami 3, it's even on my "games to buy" list already. I think I may have been unsure if it had a tate option.

Under is available for DC though, and I don't need an HD version as the cab can't do better than the 480i of the DC version. Any others for PS3? How about GC?

If we could compile a fairly complete list I think it could be a good resource for everyone. I could take care of the Dreamcast section.

The reason I'm asking this stuff now is that I need to know how many consoles to account for when designing the switching circuit for the cabinet.

Ps3 and gc aren't worth it, no exclusives.

The only PC Engine Arcade CD-Rom2 game that NEC released was none other than "Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire"...it usually goes for $250.00 and up on the secondary PCE collector's market. The prices listed on eBay are too much for the asking (even though some of them are based out of Japan). Or you could go with a moderately priced very well produced Sapphire boot copy to satisfy your need to play it properly.

We're definitely on the same page here.

I was actually reading about that game earlier today, but as you said earlier it's "verizontal" mode only right? I'll have a region and RGB modded PC Engine Duo running on the horizontal cab. $250 is pretty steep though, I'm allowed to ask where you'd get a cheap copy? I'm saving my money for a mint copy of Chi no Rondo right now...

May be worth mentioning that Raiden Project and Raiden Dx support Tate on PS1.

Edited to add that Toaplan Shooting Battle on PS1 to the mix.

Put Wonderswan's Judgement Silversword on that cab. Works on tate and it can be amulated.

Without the boot disc cheat, Raiden Project lets you rotate the screen but not the controls. So the tate mode is there but it isn't very useful (unless you want to rotate your joystick as well).

The N.A. release of Ultimate Shooting Collection for Wii is also annoying since you have to enter a secret code to enable rotated controls.

The Saturn alone has:

Battle Garegga
Batsugun
Dodonpachi
Donpachi
Kingdom Grandprix
Game Paradise
Gun.Frontier
Gekirindan
Kyukyoku Tiger II Plus
Gunbird
Strikers 1945
Strikers 1945 II
Layer Section
Image Fight
Shienryu

Plus more that I can't think of atm.

What the shit is the point of that? Especially on something as Niche as the Ultimate Shooting collection.

The first Xbox also got Psyvariar 2.
Sonic Wings Special (PSX and Saturn), unlike Aero Fighters 2&3, is to be played on a vertical screen.
The rear gate is closed down
The way out is cut off

The controls shouldn't need to be rotated unless you don't actually physically rotate the monitor, right?

It is annoying, but at least it's better than having tate removed entirely. What irritates me more is that the game (and its Japan-only "sequel") can only rotate left, while both of my flatscreens can only be rotated right (unless you take them off the stand and lean them carefully against something).

BALLS! I just realized I should've asked that as well.

Which direction do most console games rotate?

The only tate-able console games I have right now are for Dreamcast, and it's not hooked up, can't remember.

In my experience most PS2-and-earlier shmups rotate the screen left-side-down by default, while most of them released in the HD era rotate right-side down: that said, some allow you to rotate in either direction, though it's mostly the more modern ones that offer that option.

All 3:4 games when displayed in tate use left rotation by default (left side of the screen becomes the bottom). Just about all HD era tate games allow rotation in any direction (some even from the prior generation, like Psyvariar 2, include either direction rotation).

The U.K version of raiden project allows tate without any codes or bollocks. also dunno if you've considered it, but there are tonnes of hori shmups on the amiga if you wanted to add that to your other cab....
