It's possible, but you do know that the Steam version is DRM-free, right?

It's funny - out of the 16 or so reviews we've had, I don't think one reviewer has actually completed the game.
It's also quite sad because the graphics in the later stages are quite stunning.

HG101 seems to enjoy it as well. It gives me a Chaos Field vibe, from what I've seen?

I'm not too familiar with Chaos Field, but wasn't it vertical scrolling only?

Yep. Similar graphical aesthetics, I think.

Okay, my cold is much better today and I can manage some semblance of coherency, so I’d like to ask for some shmup forum input on this...

Destructoid’s review of Ether Vapor Remaster posted yesterday and in a particularly scathing write-up, EVR received a 4.5 out of 10 (the lowest review score of any Nyu Media game to date). Here is the review: http://www.destructoid.com/review-ether ... 0803.phtml

Ordinarily, I’m not one to take dwell on negative reviews – it’s all part of the gaming life – but is it me, or does this review seem to a calculated attempt to undermine the game? Even putting aside points such as negative comments that are unjustifiable in their extremity & limited criticisms stretched to apply to the whole game, I’ve never until now seen a review that actually links to a page with a pirated version.

So I’d like to ask the game players (YOU!) for a second opinion on this. Are the points in the review NOT exaggerated? Does EVR deserve this score? Wtf is up with posting a link to a pirate site in a game review anyway? Do you even care?

I’m sure Destructoid wouldn’t be averse to the traffic, so if you would be up for it, please letus hear your feedback in the comments section of the review. It would be nice to get some balance on the Destructoid page, especially with us working hard to get this game up on Steam next.

Well, I can't discuss in the game itself (yet), but if they link to a pirated version of the game, can't you sue them somehow for (helping with) copyright infringement?

Update: Destructoid have removed the link to the pirated version.

That's a huge improvement, but 4.5 / 10? I wouldn't presume to ask they revisit their score, but it would be nice to hear the view of the gamers in the comments, either way. Please drop them if you have them. Thanks!

Some of the complaints are accurate, like the homing lasers and enemies on different planes, but EVR was designed as a bit of a memorizer. Hopefully Destructoid's readers have enough initiative to spin the demo, and judge for themselves. I for one have already voted with my wallet.

Spends a page complaining about the gameplay, mentioning several other shmups, and then says this
It doesn’t help that the game is difficult, limiting health and continues until you unlock more through failed attempts.
The paragraph that mentions having three weapons + charge attacks and then detracts the game for lack of variety is also particularly painful
Live to fly, fly to live, it's all very orthodox

Which is funny because most Cave games (which he seems very hardo-gay for) only have three weapons in total: shot, power shot, and bomb.

Wow, that review is almost entirely complete horseshit. No powerups? That didn't stop Ikaruga from being worshiped on a holy altar by the masses. No extra health or continues until you unlock them? Either learn2play or go back to Call of Duty. The one reasonable complaint is about the camera angles, though it isn't anything you can't adjust to with practice. There was also a bit of a learning curve in Under Defeat for trying to dodge bullets at the top of the screen, due to the low viewing angle, but I wouldn't dock points just because of that.

Not to mention, Pinsof deserves to lose his job for linking to a pirate site. That's the kind of thing that can really damage a high-traffic journalism site's reputation and land them in legal hot water. I mean, if Destructoid can fire a guy for making a completely legitimate, "misogynist" negative comment about Felicia Day on his personal Twitter account, that made no reference to her gender...

I'm sure you're aware that this is going to be damaging to your sales, GenkiPatton, and I offer my sympathies. It seems like every indie game that doesn't offer some silly new gimmick, faux-retro pixel graphics and chiptunes, or tons of internet meme jokes is doomed to low review scores.

It's not on Steam yet, but we're planning for that to happen pretty soon after eXceed hits.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. As Op Intensify pointed out, a write-up like this on a site as highly-trafficked as Destructoid can be absolutely and unfairly disastrous for an indie game and may well be for Ether Vapor. Hopefully having some more voices of reason present their views will help balance some of the negative impression generated.

Damn, that's just....horrible.

But I think today all major reviewers around the net have very bad taste with non-AAA gaming, for example, like this

It's all about the moneyhats.

"Professional" reviewers will hand out review scores based on the level of hype the game received. Sometimes highly promoted games will get 8 or 9/10 scores even if the actual review lists a lot of major problems, because Metacritic is all that really matters. Right, guys?

I mean, look at the disparity between Mass Effect 3's Metacritic reviewer score and user score. Some of the professional reviews make sure to point out that it can hardly be considered an RPG, the writing's terrible, and the ending makes no sense, but they still give it no lower than an 8/10 because it's Mass Effect, and they don't want to stop getting money/swag from BioWare.

Actually, things are even worse in Japan, where it's not even a secret anymore that perfect scores in Famitsu are bought.

Alright, I'm convinced that Destructoid has a grudge against shmups. Just look:

Taito's classic pew-pew-pew space shooter, Raystorm, is now available on the Apple App Store

Oh come on. That's not an attack on shmups, it's just dumb nerd 'humour'. Lisa said pew pew that time she was pretending to be a boy, therefore pew pew pew is half again as funny.

Shmups have unusual gameplay, let's face it, where the 'meta' game is more important than the 'skills' game (ie. memorisation, discovering routes vs. lightning reflexes. see also: playing for score, general lack of casino-style compulsiveness, etc.). It's unfortunate but that does mean it's going to be scored lower than more 'acceptable' genres - see Pinsof's review of Oniken, which is an 8-bit style platformer, which gets a 7 despite slightly crap controls, cheap design and some overpowered player abilities (according to the review; I haven't played it) - as one example. And yeah, good review scores are paid for (maybe you - Genki Patton - should remind Pinsof that Capcom are involved. Instant 7!).
Still, it's not all doom and gloom; because of this very thing, what shmuppers are going to be hanging round Destructoid/Kotaku/etc. for their shmups news? There are communities around the world, for example right here, that will assess the game on it's actual merits. Of course, this won't bring in the big bucks but you knew that when you started, right?

Oh, and yeah, complain to Destructoid about the pirate link. Just unacceptable.

edit: also lolz at the lock-on charge attack not seeming to do anything. RTFM djeeneus

This is the 3rd time this has come up. Time to write an FAQ, I think... anyway, the good news is that's it's straightforward to resolve.

This error is caused by DirectX and it is recommended that you install the latest version of DirectX to resolve. Please see this link for more detail: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerr ... -error.htm

Hopefully that will solve the issue. Please let me know how you fare.
