PSP Shooters
It's been a while since I last checked out the PSP Store but did so today and noticed that you can now download Shienryu, GaiaSeed and Sonic Wings Special (amongst others).
Anyone tried them? Going to check out Shienryu now.

Re: PSP Shooters
Those have been up for a long time now. You can thank Vic Ireland, formerly of Working Designs, for getting them there.
Also recommended for PSP/PSN:
Neo Geo Heroes: Ultimate Shooting - expanded version of KOF Sky Stage with more characters
Gradius Collection - includes Gaiden
R-Types/R-Type Delta - needs no introduction
Kyuiin - crazy-ass vacuum cleaner shmup with interesting scoring! Japanese language only
Dezaemon Plus/Dezaemon Kids - DIY shmup creation software, no way of distributing game files to my knowledge though
It should be noted that all emulated PS1 games on PSP/PS3 suffer from noticeable input lag.

Others I can remember
All the above also work on the PS Vita.
Also Vanguard and Vanguard II (PSN Mini) (not on the Vita).
Of course there are even more if you go with Japanese UMD releases (or PSN).
- Soldier Blade (PC Engine)
- Super Star Soldier (PC Engine)
- Alpha Mission II (Neo Geo/PSP)
- Alpha Mission (PSN Mini)
- Flying Hamster (PSN Mini)

Despite appearing to be a Pikmin clone, I've heard that Army Corps of Hell plays more like a 360-degree arena shmup than anything else. It seems like one of the most underrated Vita games out right now.

Re: PSP Shooters
Well I've been playing Shienryu and as you say there is a little input lag but not enough to ruin the game. For £3.99 I am very happy.
I have a few of the other games you mention but I should say that Neo Geo Heroes is a horrible game on the PSP. Flying Hamster on the other hand.........

Re: PSP Shooters
I bought Dodonpachi from PSN to play on my PSP. Bad idea!
(I can't even see the bullets!)
It is TATE-able but even that doesn't make it much easier...

Re: PSP Shooters
Was just reminded of Cho Aniki Zero. Unfortunately it's really not worth bothering with; it's just a shoddy remake/remix of the first game and nowhere near as weird as we've come to expect from the series. I think it was made by Koreans. It is the only Cho Aniki with an English translation though.

TATE on a PSP? I can't imagine that's too comfortable to play.wariomona wrote:I bought Dodonpachi from PSN to play on my PSP. Bad idea!

GaiaSeed, Shienryu and Sonic Wings Special are all available in the UK, mate (at least on the PSP - I don't own a PS3). I did a wee search for them last night. They were £3.99 each.

Re: PSP Shooters
I just picked up a PSP and loaded a Cave specific build of FinalBurn Alpha LB on it. Tate mode is actually pretty cool once you get used to it. I use the dpad for movement (analog works too) and fire with my thumb like this:Keres wrote: TATE on a PSP? I can't imagine that's too comfortable to play.

It gets a bit laggy with newer titles but the screen size makes the hardcore bullet hell games insanely difficult anyway.
Re: PSP Shooters
people seem to have forgotten about the Strikers 1945 Plus release on PSN. though its as hard as it ever was, even if the boss music isn't included.
Re: PSP Shooters
Hudson's Star Soldier for PSP (a Japanese release not to be confused with the PC Engine Star Soldier Collection for PSP) is designed to be played exactly that way.sharpfork2 wrote:... I tried this guys shoulder button technique and it feels a bit better than the way I was holding it in the picture.

Shit, I'm looking on Vita, tbh I think of the two as th same machine for some reason. Bummer.Klatrymadon wrote:GaiaSeed, Shienryu and Sonic Wings Special are all available in the UK, mate (at least on the PSP - I don't own a PS3). I did a wee search for them last night. They were £3.99 each.

The Vita can't play PSOne Classics yet, though Sony confirmed it will be able to by the end of the year.

As much as I LOVE handheld gaming (at least 90% of my gaming time is devoted to handhelds) and LOVE shmups, I really don't enjoy playing shooters on handhelds. I can think of just a couple of exceptions, and they aren't on the PSP.

Re: PSP Shooters
Yeah I can only really handle the slower-paced horis on the PSP. Gradius/Parodius/Salamander collections all play well. Harmful Park is good too. Can't handle Progear, though, or really any of the post-toaplan verts. The Capcom-published verizontals are just on this side of playable for me.professor ganson wrote:As much as I LOVE handheld gaming (at least 90% of my gaming time is devoted to handhelds) and LOVE shmups, I really don't enjoy playing shooters on handhelds. Anyone know if it's possible to play the Irem horis on it? I've got R-Type for the SMS, but that's it.

Re: PSP Shooters
Yeah, I'm having a great time with it at the moment. The only real ballaches are the enemies that swoop in quickly from the sides (if you're not already well clear of their entry points, they're almost certainly going to tag you), and that the ship in your video ("Rundael") far outclasses the other two, to the extent that when I go back to using the standard Caesar ship, it feels ill-equipped to even deal with the stages. Maybe that's where the real challenge lies, though - I almost 1CC'd it with the Rundael on my first go.sharpfork2 wrote: That looks like a ton of fun: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCSOdbdzxwQ
Re: PSP Shooters
I take this back. With some effort I've gotten pretty decent at Strikers 1945 II using the new grip. Right thumb is worn out after a few creds, but it works.Moniker wrote:Yeah I can only really handle the slower-paced horis on the PSP.

Re: PSP Shooters
That was the only real advantage of the PSP Go - you could play downloadable PSP-only titles with a DualShock 3 controller (thanks to bluetooth - and only with the left stick and d-pad) AND display it on a TV (which hopefully has a zoom feature or you can have an XRGB-mini Framemeister do it for you). The PSP-3000 can display on TV (progressive and non-progressive) but you are stuck with the PSP-based controls and for the PSP-2000 you are further constrained to progressive TVs. Of course none of this is portable gaming (lug-gable, maybe) but it may let you play a game that may otherwise be difficult to deal with - or in any case make it far more enjoyable.Moniker wrote:I take this back. Re: PSP Shooters
Actually just discovered the lag can be made less by increasing the CPU Clock - which I've just done. Still really enjoying Shienryu.
Re: PSP Shooters
What do I need to h00k up my PSP-3000 to my old Toshiba CRT
It would be cool to see the PC Engine shoot-'em-up collection from the PSP

Re: PSP Shooters
I guess this is almost more of a PS1 question, but is there any way to rotate the controls in Sonic Wings Special for TATE?
There is a custom FBA build that supposedly runs Ketsui, DDP DOJ, and ESPgaluda but I've never gotten any to run without extremely scrambled sprites.
There is also an emulator that runs Judgement Silversword, but the lag makes it hard to play after area 17 or so.

With a PSP-3000 you can use the PSP PlayStation Portable Component AV Cable (5 wires - best quality)xbl0x180 wrote:What do I need to h00k up my PSP-3000 to my old Toshiba CRTIt would be cool to see the PC Engine shoot-'em-up collection from the PSP
http://us.playstation.com/psp/accessori ... -3000.html
if the CRT has a component input
otherwise the PSP-3000 can also use the PSP PlayStation Portable AV Cable (Composite - 3 wires - bearable quality - cannot be used with the PSP-2000 to play games).
http://us.playstation.com/psp/accessori ... -3000.html
These cables can be difficult to find in stores as they have been mostly displaced by the PSP Go versions of the cables - which are now being displaced with PS Vita accessories.
If you have a PS3 downloading Soldier Blade and Super Star Soldier from PSN makes more sense - the screen is automatically properly scaled to fill the largest 4:3 area possible (at least on a 16:9 set - don't know on a 4:3 CRT) giving you a much better picture than the PSP can - with the PSP cables only a small part of the screen is used which is even much smaller than what you see with letter boxed widescreen movies - even on 16:9 sets.
PS: Of course there is always the Wii Virtual Console for PC Engine titles. I think it has all the titles that are on the PSP "Soldier Collection (PC Engine Best Collection)". Blazing Lazers (Gunhed) can also be found there.
