Photoshop advice needed

Post by antares »

Can someone who is good in Photoshop give me a little advice?
I want to make this picture greyscale and sharpen it up as much as possible (it's very blurry).
I saw there is a sharpen option with basic and advanced settings in the filter menu where you can set various values. I tried to play around with it and the pic got sharper but I'm sure there is more in it ;)

It would be really great if someone could open this pic and sharpen it as much as possible, then tell me what values I should set. Thanks!!

Go to Filters -> Smart Sharpen

Amount: 30
Radius: 2.0
Setting: Gaussian Blur

Keep in mind PS is not an ideal program for detailed image manipulation if you're trying to scale something up for print purposes. This particular technique makes everything sharp, but also quite vivid, and you may want to adjust afterwards using Filter -> Reduce Noise or desaturate slightly in Image -> Adjustments -> Hue/Saturation.

That picture is not blurry.

It does have some JPEG artifacts though. I'm not sure you'll be able to get a really professional result out of the file.

The last post in this thread ought to cover something like what you need. The key is to use a per-color channel method of sharpening. Unsharp mask also.

I'll be interested to hear how the interpolation comes out. That looks tricky, because there are many fine lines that are rendered with off-color pixels instead of a solid color line, which is always tough for a program like this to render accurately. But yeah, smart sharpen might help. You also might try a mask for sharpening to preserve the look of areas that are more "blurry" (which have a gentle gradient).

What version of PS are you on?

You can always simply desaturate for grayscale. If you want control over the desaturation level of specific colors, make a Black & WHite adjustments layer and cock around w/ the sliders.

For sharpening.

1: Duplicate background layer (assuming that's where the image is)
2: Filter->Sharpen->Unsharpen mask. Mess w/ settings, but I generally use Amount somewhere between 120% and 180%, Radios between 1 and 3, and Threshold somewhere around 2.
3: Select your new, sharpened layer and change the opacity to something not quite "so sharp". 50% is a good place to start, then go from there.
4: Pat yourself on the back.

OK, thanks for the tips! I'll try my best, not so sure if I deserve a back pat at the end though ;)

I'm using Photoshop CS2 v9 but all I'm ever doing with it is image trimming, I'm a noob when it comes to image editing.
