looks like crt is dying, but...

Post by ryu »

so i've got this new crt monitor. it's got only bnc inputs so i've only been fiddling around with composite signals for now, since i'm lacking the necessary parts/cables for anything else.

i started off with my n64. i got some weird purple flicker every few seconds (i heard this is a sign of a crt dying - uh oh) and decided to try out line 2. same thing. so i went and changed the composite cable with another c. cable.
same issues, but now the flickering was happening at shorter intervalls.

i put the n64 away and hooked up a ps2. no issues at all using composite video.

so i went back to the n64 to see what would happen now. it got worse. instead of the picture flickering in purple it sort of malformed whenever it flickered. it got to the point where the flickering also caused the colors to go to b/w. i quickly turned the n64 off at that point. been hearing these were even worse signs of a badly damaged crt.

so i went a step further and checked how my snes was working on it using the same cable i had used on my n64 last. to my surprise there were no problems with this setup.

so i checked with another monitor. i tried the n64 with both composite scart and bnc composite inputs. no problems at all.

should i be worried about my new monitor? i really don't know what to think of this. using my n64 on it it clearly looks like it's dying (really quickly. like the issues get worse with every flicker), but with any other console there's no issues at all.

Don't worry about it. You can travel from the Milky Way to Andromeda and back 1500 times before the sun explodes.
