Autorunner subgenre

Post by DJ Incompetent »

Autorunners are a style of game I think smartphones can handle pretty well, competitively, for small time thrills.

Example: Canabalt

One with a neat scoring system is called I Must Run

I was curious if anybody knows of more games that build on this subgenre?

BLADE DASH :D

I'm partial to Spike Dislike. Amazing auto running game.

Also: Jetpack Joyride, but the scoring system is shit. Dead Runner, Cube Runner, Solipskier... It's one of the few genres iOS does well.

I've been on the fence about this genre, the games I've played get stale pretty quick. Zombie parkour was okay. I might give that Blade Dash a try. The Hunger Games tie-in, Girl on Fire just released for free, but. I only played it for a couple of minutes - too busy playing Draw Something.
Edit- Also want to add Off the Leash, kind of a vertical auto runner, loved it, even with the dumb tilty controls.

Wonder-fucking-boy

The one that started it all.

Also:
The Adventure Island games (the ones with Takahashi Meijin, not the one that is the PC Engine version of Wonderboy III: Dragon's Trap)
Genji Tsuushin Agedama (PCE)
Toaplan's Horror Story

Jump Bug is awesome - though there is no actual running, because you are a bouncing car.

I've actually been reasonably impressed with Bit Trip Runner, although it's definitely one of the more difficult ones out there.

I think Atomic Runner is severely underrated. Also, that more shooter-like Wonderboy is good for a quick blast every now and then.

The default control scheme in Western releases could've had something to do with it. Also, in my humble oipinon even the coin-op original should be played with auto-fire. I'm fine with button mashing in some classic arcade games, but Chelnov is not among them.
Remember, foks: one button for auto-fire, one button for jump and one button for switching directions. Is all.
Frankly, the topic just screams "Chelonv!" out loud. Both versions should be about equally cherished. Those few Sharp X68000 owners might get some kick out of the controller adapter.

The control scheme that uses A to fire left, B to jump, and C to fire right is the best.

Boils down to the personal tastes I believe (that's three buttons all the same for ya), but there must be SOME reason why Chelnov is barely remembered these days. Compared to the likes of Wonder Boy/Monster World and the Ghouls/Ghosts/Goblins series for example.

two decent free titles for iOS:
Hunger Games: Girl on Fire (from the canabalt guy, it's guess what canabalt with a shooting mechanic)
Temple Run (pepsiman meets indiana jones)

Oh, I just remembered another:

Toaplan's Horror Story / Demon's World!

All these games are pretty far in the past, so any time they get mentioned, the group talking about them will be small.

Personally, I recall discussions (in the last ten years or so) at least as often about Chelnov as about Wonder Boy, although the Arthur series gets way more attention just because it's Capcom. It is a different type of game though, even compared to Wonder Boy / Adventure Island.

Turn button scheme: Press a button to turn, then let go and press another button to fire.
~versus~
Turn-and-fire button scheme: Press a button to immediately turn and begin firing in that direction. Additionally, you no longer need to determine Chelnov's facing when thinking of firing in that direction.

That's why I didn't say it was a matter of taste, but a matter of superiority. The turn-and-fire button scheme mirrors the intuitive left-right facing that works in every d-pad / joystick game made, or controlling Pac-Man in Pac-Land.

Three mentions for Toaplan's Demon's World/Horror Story! Seriously one of my favorite arcades. It's very endearing. I always call the 1 player guy 'Lenny', with his slick ass mustache and rockin' shades.

Haven't read this yet but someone made a Demon's World blog entry!

I still get nightmares about this game.

I like Dragon Fly on android (presumably iOS as well). Scoring's nothing to speak about, but the parabolic flow is hypnotizing...

As for me, I just keep the auto-fire button pressed down (and it's always obvious which side Chelnow faces) and just tap the turn button whenever I want to switch directions. Since auto-fire is kosher in the port, I call it a matter of taste.

The arcade had what looked like bicycle steering. I always crashed and burned on the tracks at the end 8)
