NamcoBandai to have webcomic of it's Xevious shmup franchise
Was browsing on this anime site and came across some shmuppy worthy news. NamcoBandai plans to have a webcomic of it's classic Xevious shmup franchise in a celebration of it's 30th anniversary. I recall watching some very skilled Xevious players do their magic at a local arcade back in 1984. This was the Atari Inc. upright cab version of Xevious, of course. Quite impressive watching a master Xevious player dodge the bullets, small fry and with perfect precision, launch of a well placed bomb shot to bring down the huge Andor Genesis mothership once & for all.

It's supposed to take place in South America as the background setting. Sounds intriguing indeed.
Wasn't there supposed to be a Xevious CG movie released as well some time back?

What a hilariously lazy concept.

This is probably just something to renew the copyright. What's the last reference to Xevious they made...Star Fox Assault?

I haven't seen but I'm pretty sure 3DS Ridge Racer as references? Unless you're referring to actual shooting.Estebang wrote:This is probably just something to renew the copyright. What's the last reference to Xevious they made...Star Fox Assault?
I always found this game pretty boring and the PS1 Xevious was terrible so don't understand personally why Namco milk it.

they're doing the same thing with SkyKid as well; the illustrations for the SkyKid comic are rather nice, and have really cool updates to the (admittedly kinda dorky, but charming) character design. i can't really tell if this is a kind of hamfisted attempt to actually do something new with the franchises or, as Estebang mentioned, a way to renew the copyright.
i wouldn't call it lazy, though, as the art i've seen for the comics has been rather nice, so they're at least hiring talented folks to illustrate 'em.

The guy who writes and draws The Adventures of Dr. McNinja is now illustrating a Galaga webcomic on the same site. He broke into "real" comics last year with a Daredevil series (for those who require such credentials).

Now if only they'd translate that Xevious novel that the creator wrote...

The Xevious comic (thankfully being wrapped up) always struck me as mediocre quality. Poorly-paced, unable to stick with any of its concepts for too long, the characters feel flat, the art feels like a generic churned-out double-aught superhero comic book style, etc.
Being a fan of Hastings and North though, I have high hopes for the Galaga comic. It's already off to a much greater start.

And galaga's bugs are much more compelling than xevious' floating tile armada.

Last time I looked at that was probably before I joined here...some storyline about dinosaurs.DoYouWantKarate wrote:The Adventures of Dr. McNinja
Edit: Almost right - 2006. Art hasn't improved very much.
