How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
All this talk about locking out used games had me thinking.
I own about 70 360 games. I've bought two games at full retail (BlazBlue Calamity Trigger and Deathsmiles)
I've never paid 60$ for any triple AAA title this generation.
How does everyone else compare, how many US releases have you bought this generation at full retail price?

Re: How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
The random shmup that gets released domestically gets bought right away, obviously.
Dark Souls was a day 1 buy.
Also a couple NISA rpgs on the PS3, since they're douchbags and never make enough copies to last past the launch date (you can either pay full retail at launch, or higher than full retail through a reseller a few weeks later). And not a single one was worth it. I swear, they wouldn't be able to sell their crap at more than $20 if they didn't create artificial rarity.

Re: How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
Yeah same here, DS and shmups are the only games ive bought at full price in a long time, the rest I usually buy new when it drops under £25 which for most games isnt that long, plus bugs and drm can be fixed especially if its a PC game. I still havnt bought skyrim yet and im in no rush as its like a fine wine
That said im not much of a online multiplayer but, I would want to get those games at launch before the servers are empty, this doent apply as much to popular steam games that get regular sales since they are always getting fresh folk on the servers

Re: How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
Ahhh don't say that! The only reason I'm remotely interested in maybe one day possibly owning a PS3 is the NIS games. If they're not worth it, I guess I'll go back to not be interested at all.Jeneki wrote:The random shmup that gets released domestically gets bought right away, obviously.

Well your mileage may vary, of course. But I've found their franchises to be a big step down from the PS2 days.Casper<3 wrote:Ahhh don't say that! Worst of all is the abuse of DLC in NIS published games. For example, in Hyperdimension Neptunia there are a bunch of characters that join your party and ... just sort of hang out. You can't use them in combat unless you pay extra for DLC. One of the best combat features is based around swapping characters mid-fight, and if you don't shell out extra cash for these characters you're locked out of it for 95% of the game (you eventually get a few extra combat characters once you're near the end).

Re: How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
At least 30, probably more. I've got over 200 games between the 360 and PS3, so it's kinda impossible for me to remember what I paid for each one (or what I got as a gift, etc.). I don't buy too many games any more though, nowadays I just rent anything that doesn't have replay value.
Re: How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
Hrm.. a bunch. I'd say 15-20. Shmups, Mario, and Zelda games are instant day 1, as well as stuff that I absolutely have to have for some reason - Dark Souls, the Bioshocks, that kinda thing. I trade in games a lot though, so my total game library right now is maybe 30, this generation. Not counting XBLA/XBLIG of which I have far far too many.
The freaks are rising through the floor.
Recommended XBLIG shmups.

Re: How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
I bought catherine for ps3 for.....*cringe* $80 after tax.
It was an impulse purchase just because i didnt give a shit what i did that day.
I wanted the game.
I didn't want to wait for shipping.
and even though i hate gamestop, I marched right in there, waited for half an hour while i was offered a million different things by the dumbass at the cashier.. and finally paid.
I walked out of that store with my head held high, perfectly aware that i spent about double of what i should have.

Re: How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
It's kinda funny, sometimes I'll buy a game at full retail price as a pre-order and other times, at a cheaper budget pricepoint. And so it'll sit on a shelf somewhere unopened and unplayed. Eventually, I'll get around to tearing off the fresh plastic wrapper and fire it up on the ol' console to see what they're about.
The longer I spend inside an speciality gaming store, I've noticed, is that there's a likely chance of something to see/buy -- works everytime.

Re: How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
Off the top of my head:
Half Life 2 - I'd already played it on Xbox, loved it, and wanted to play in in HD.
Dues Ex:HR - As I was/am a total DE nerd
DeathSmiles - And was a little dessapointed
Dark Souls - Then I cried. If From could make their games just a tad more accessible I'd love them.
DDP:R - Goes without saying.
The rest, either price drops, or second hand. If second hand wasn't available, I wouldn't have bought them anyways.
I was going to splash for Darkness 2, but after playing the demo, it seems they've jettisoned everything I liked about the original. I'm intrigued by Syndicate, but seeing as I can't play the multi-player only demo - again, I'll wait. Next day one will be the new Ridge Racer, and only because it's a BugBear racer, and Flatout UC is my favourite racer of this gen.

Re: How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
Recently, I've been buying almost all my games in "like new used" condition if I get them from a store. Either that or I just purchase them from you guys =P.
So no, not paying full retail price.

Re: How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
Last game I bought new from a store was "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" for the PC.
But I used a gift card, so not sure that technically counts?
Anyway, that was a good game.

Re: How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
Probably around 100 in my lifetime, I've bought a lot of used games though.
Approximations:
Genesis+SegaCD = 30
Saturn = 10
Dreamcast = 15
PS2 = 30
Xbox = 10
Gamecube = 10
Xbox360 = 2 (Deathsmiles and Child of Eden)

Re: How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
Good lord, lots. I couldn't even begin to guess. To be fair a lot of this generation and a fair bit of the last was on trade credit...but I still got em at full retail. I buy a lot of stuff at yard sales and such and trade it in for credit at local stores. I'm running low on trade stock so I've started buying outright again though. I'd say minimum 20 a year starting with the PS2. I have almost a hundred DS games alone and almost every one was bought at full retail. Over half my PS3 games and over a third of my Xbox 360 games as well.
<@scootnet> if you were a real gamer, you could jerk it to Super Metroid box art
Re: How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
A lot less than I used to, especially at the $60 price point. These days, I tend to buy about 2-3 full price games a year at most. The last one I got was Skyrim (PC version), and before that it was Disgaea 4 (direct from NISA) and Portal 2. With a bit pf patience, it's too easy these days to find things for less than full retail (Amazon/Steam sales, advertised specials in B&M stores, etc.) to justify running out and spending $60 on a game.
One thing I will say here is that even though financially the difference between $50 and a $60 game purchase is largely insignificant to me, psychologically the $60 price point is far harder to justify.

I preorder every upcoming game that I really want and can afford, so it will suffice to say--"a lot."

Re: How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
Nothing this generation.
As far as I remember, I know a few of my N64 games were definitely full retail, but that's about it.
And the most recent full-priced game I can remember getting was when I bought Sonic Advance, but at $35 for a full retail GBA game, that was completely acceptable.
I always waited until games dropped price, and it's why I still don't own any of the Super Smash Bros games -- they never really did that!
Same with Kingdom Hearts and a few other games I wanted.

Re: How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
This gen? Probably a few SF games, and maybe a Halo. Frankly, I haven't really bought many UK games off the shelf in the first weeks of release, back since the PlayStation... and looking back, most of those were hideously butchered 50hz piss-takes, that I ended up buying back on other consoles or import (Resident Evil series, Tekken etc.)
If that Raiden Fighters Aces ever comes out here for 15 quid off the bat, I would take that straight away though, no sweat. I noticed the other day in a physical games shop (!) they were charging £38 for the new 3D GameBoy titles. Good luck with that during a recession

Re: How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
The four justifications I have for myself preordering stuff are:
- Supporting the developers
- Gotta get in on that online scene before everyone abandons it for CoD/SFIV/whatever!
- Preorder bonuses, limited editions (sometimes)
- Not having to deal with skeezy Amazon resellers who ship games in flimsy envelopes that get crushed

Seriously, I know you guys get shafted over there with things like that, but that's fucking $60 USD. I could buy a 360 game with that money!

Re: How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
This generation I have a PC and a Wii, so retail prices fall quite quickly for most things!
Full price:
Conduit 2
Metroid Prime Trilogy (although it cost less because I traded in the shovelware which came with my Wii for it)
Xenoblade
The Last Story (granted, pre-order until 2 weeks' time so technically I've not paid yet)
FIFA 12 (PC)
Bought as presents for me which would've been full price:
CoD Black Ops and MW3
Goldeneye
Metroid Other M
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
I don't think I even paid full retail price for most games in previous generations either, because the DC and SNES were towards the end when I bought them and I was a kid with the SMS - so could only afford cheap older games!

Re: How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
I usually wait for things to come down a bit but if I know I am going to get a lot of time out of a game or if I am going to be playing it extensively in co-op then I will buy it day one. When me and my online buddies get a new co-op RPG we will generally play it on and off for years, often for hundreds of hours, which is plenty of value for money in my eyes and it ensures that the developers are getting paid.
Also if it's niche (a lot of niche games tend to fall into my taste range) I will try to get it asap before it disappears.

Re: How many domestic games have you bought at full retail price
I buy most current-gen stuff new. I've only purchased like 3-4 used PS3/360 games out of my collection of like 50, and that was only because they were older games I couldn't really find new.
