A startling number of Japanese youths have turned their backs on sex and relationships, a new survey has found.

The survey, conducted by the Japan Family Planning Association, found that 36% of males aged 16 to 19 said that they had 'no interest' in or even 'despised' sex.

If that's not bad enough, The Wall Street Journal reports that a whopping 59% of female respondents aged 16 to 19 said they were uninterested in or averse to sex, a near 12% increase since 2008.

Many commentators in the Japanese and international media have laid the problem squarely at the feet of soshoku danshi -- "herbivore men" (...) It refers to Japanese young men who have rejected their culture's traditional definition of masculinity, and seemingly eschew relationships with the opposite sex as part.

CNN spoke to a Midori Saida, a 24-year-old Japanese woman who described "herbivore men" as "flaky and weak."

"We like manly men," she said. "We are not interested in those boys -- at all."

BBC News spoke to one such "herbivore" man. The man, Yusaki Yakahashi said: "Building a relationship seems like too much effort. To get her to like me and for me to like her... I'd have to give up everything I do at the weekend for her. I don't want to do that."

Another theory that seeks to explain Japan's shrinking population is that Japanese youth spend too much time engaged with technology, living in virtual worlds or settling for virtual girlfriends rather than real ones."

I just read that Japan had 250,000 less people in 2011 than in 2010 - thanks in part to 3/11, old people dying, and younger folks refusing marriage / sex. The sad part is that after being here 7+ years, I kinda understand now. Being here young, a foreigner, on vacation, with no responsibilities is awesome. Being an older drone in a Japanese workplace with waifu and child at home will literally suck the life out of you. I didn't understand the whole concept of these internet cafes on every corner at first - but I totally get it now. .. And now I think I've already revealed more about my personal live than I care to.. haha..

Personally, I am hoping for what that article calls the "big option." Unless Japan wants to fade into obscurity, it needs to embrace multiculturalism and immigration and stop being so hard-nosed. I also hope that by the time my daughter comes of age, they will have abolished that mandatory choice of citizenship. I hope she can keep her dual citizenship for the rest of her life. British citizens can keep a dual citizenship with America if they want.

This is what happens when the following factors come together.

1. Women told it's their imperitive to find a strong male to give them kids, and that nothing but the best will do.
2. Males pressured to produce offspring and get married, often when suffering from low self esteem
3. Readily available escapism

The formality of relationships in asia doesn't help. For a young japanese male, the formalities of meeting the family and subjecting yourself to their judgement and scrutiny, being practically forced into marriage as soon as possible must make things incredibly difficult.

Couple this with (through my experience and what I've read/seen) the emotional immaturity of young japanese women and the closed way in which some, but not all japanese people treat those around them, and I don't think this is a huge surprise.

Japan seems pretty xenophobic as well in their policy and attitude as well.

My understanding is that the youth of Japan cannot take this very pression. If their parents' marriage seemed like a chore and now those parents demand of children to marry just about any other "responsible" person for the sake of not missing the boat, it may be quite a turnoff.

I believe that if your parents (or other couples around you) are unhappy, you are less likely to develop healthy (i.e. not making anybody unhappy) sexual relationship with a person of opposite sex.
Of course many of those young males allegedly uninterested in sex are going to become hookers' clients.

Indeed if your parents appear to be in a loveless, functional marriage it is going to affect you. my parents divorced when i was five, so i grew up with very clear ideas about marriage.
