Region-free Xbox 360 shmups?

Post by SuperSoaker360 »

Okay, so I'm looking to get some Japanese shmups for the Xbox 360 but I don't want to spend money for a Japanese 360 - at least not at the moment. From what I've heard, Mushihimesama Futari and Eschatos are region-free. Are there any other region-free shmups that I should look into or is that it?

Mushihime-sama Futari, Espgaluda II(am reminded below that it's standard edition only), Muchi Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets, Eschatos and Bullet Soul is everything from memory.

Also I think the European version of dodonpachi resurrection is playable on American 360's, but I'm not 100% sure about that one.

The PAL version of Dodonpachi Resurrection does work on NA 360s, but you will need to make a UK live account and uk MSPs to buy the DLC (The brilliant Black Label mode and that other version which is a slight change on the vannila version)

Pink sweets/muchi muchi pork
Ikaruga
Strania
Deathsmiles
Dodonpachi resurection
Rayforce
There's a few other games on xbla, im pretty sure there's a few other threads similar to this one on this site. If you do a search you might find them lol.

You should check out eschatos if you're looking for something non-cave :-D

In regards to MMP&PS if you are flush with cash and are buying sealed, you might want to buy a copy that has the pre order DLC which swaps player characters between games, IIRC the limited edition and a few pre order copies of the std edition have it. Copies with the DLC inside have a sticker on the front

I cant tell you if the DLC is worth it as I dont have it

The DLC for MMP/PS is Muchi Blue Label, which adds the Pink Sweets bosses to the game (as in, you fight a standard MMP boss and then a Pink Sweets boss immediately after).

Ah so its just the bosses not the player characters?

I think if this console gen ever gets emulated ill be wishing someone unlocks this mode so I can play it. (if CAVE would only let us buy the DLC from the marketplace)

Note that the Japanese versions of Deathsmiles and DDP Daifukkatsu (both 1.5 and the retail Black Label release) are NOT region free.

I know the EU DDP Daifukkatsu (Resurrection) release by Rising Star Games IS region free, don't know about Deathsmiles.

I have a copy of Mushihimesama Futari and Deathsmiles for sale if you want it.
I'll let both them go together for $60.

Shit I might buy that copy of Futari off you, too, if he doesn't want it. Hahaha, unless you just wanna let it go as a package with DS.

Also the limited edition of Espgaluda 2 is region locked, the std ed and platinum reprint are RF.

Plus every JPN game bar Futari has its DLC marketplace locked to Japan. There is a way to get around it however (theres a guide somewhere on this site)

Thanks for the information everyone. Seems there were a few more region-free games that I wasn't aware of. I had no idea that Dodonpachi Resurrection wasn't region-locked.

Nick420 wrote:You should check out eschatos if you're looking for something non-cave :-D
Yeah, I saw a couple of videos of the game and it looks like a lot of fun. Definitely going to be one of the first few games that I'll get.

Thanks for the offer, but I'll pass. Seems you have someone else who's interested though.

So just to recap, the region-free shmups are:

Mushihimesama Futari (JP)
Espgaluda 2 (JP, Standard Edition)
Muchi Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets (JP)
Eschatos (JP)
Bullet Soul (JP)
Dodonpachi Resurrection (EU)

Let me know if there is anything else that I could throw into the list.

I think aksys did actually release a boxed version of deathsmiles in NA. Vaguely recall being annoyed it wasn't region free before the RSG announcement.

The game wasn't released in North America, why would the DLC?

Also RSG getting a US branch probably plays a large part in that.

There are no point-based extends afaik, you get extends via an invisible counter that goes up whenever you kill a destructable bullet with shot, and goes down when you kill them with the bomb

At least, I think thats how it works. Been a while since I've played this game, and I don't know why.

Ok and one more question:
How do I actually use the DLC code that came with MMP/PS? I have to make a JPN account, right? Once i do, can I still use the DLC on my American account?

EDIT: Nvm, got it.
