NEW NEO GEO PORTABLE

Post by Raytrace »

well not quite that exciting as it only seems to play games preinstalled on it and doesnt seem to have any way changing them - although maybe/hopefully that (possible) usb port on the back can be used:

I guess those are the only games they have the rights for, as the game list is almost exactly the same as in SNK Arcade Classics Vol.1.

Shoulder buttons, that's kinda odd. Maybe they'll allow for re-mapping buttons to them. The Kotaku pics also have an SD card slot.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

It's a pretty bizarre idea full stop given the price they'd probably have to sell it at. Not entirely sure they've thought this through properly, as the screen dimensions would suggest.

Very weird.

Hardware manufacturing bankrupted SNK first time around, I wonder why Playmore (who are struggling financially) are pushing this out.

Admittedly, the build quality looks suspiciously low-grade Chinese, with crappy fonts used on everything except the Neo logo, so it's probably been produced cheaply, and there's not much to get excited about game wise, most of that lot is bottom of the barrel stuff.

Edit: If it supports roms through the SD slot it could be more interesting.

Nothing more than a cheap Chinese knock-off that may have licensed the name, apparently. Still, as SkyKid mentioned, it depends on what possibilities that port offers.....

Can't see how it will be any better than a Dingoo A320 - which already plays Neo Geo games (as well as CPS1, CPS2, GBA, etc..).

That article is missing the picture of the SD port side. If the system doesn't use the SD port for additional games, then perhaps it can use an online shopping interface as the Zeebo has done. There's obviously going to be a reason for the shoulder buttons somewhere (hopefully the widescreen as well). Then again, perhaps we shouldn't put too much stock on an apparently beta design, given how one of the pictures has the Select button labeled "Menu" instead. Sure, the system looks ho-hum so far but it's just 1 exclusive away from being a Neo Geo collector's dream.

Can't you emulate Neo Geo even on a PSP?

I want this to be real, but the skeptic in me is throwin out red flags. Looks to much like an iPhone 4 with a quick photoshop makeover, 16:9 screen makes no sense, Button labels change between screenshots, etc

Yup. And the games even run better than SNK's official anthologies. Which casts further doubt on the probable quality of this new handheld.

Dunno, I heard the PS2 anthologies are very accurate.

On the PS2 SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1, Last Resort and Shock Troopers skip frames and get extremely choppy, almost unplayable at times. The Wii version, which came out later, fixed these issues. (I own both)

SNK Arcade Classics v. 1 was done by Terminal Reality, though. I also heard the US Orochi collection for PS2 was messed up and done by Terminal Reality, despite how there was already a superior JP version that was ported by a different company. I heard that some of the better collections for PS2 were done by this company, G1M2.

What irks me is the SNK and Neo-Geo labels. Why simply SNK, not SNK/PLAYMORE? I question the legitimacy of SNK/Playmore pushing to create this portable device. Plus as mentioned earlier those text just looks awful.

Well the original source provided links to a store that sells the pokeFami and SUPABOY, suggesting Hyperkin is designing this product.

Re: SNK Anthologies. I was referring specifically to the PSP anthologies - metal slug & sam shodown, at least. I haven't played the KoF one. Lots of input lag and slowdown, and stupid long load times.

That link doesn't work, but I know what you are referring to, and that was pretty much what I meant by some of the better collections. I read somewhere that those were done by G1M2 (their site doesn't have a list of everything they have done, but I remember seeing some of the anthologies listed in the updates. I think one of the people working there posted on gamefaqs and mentioned some of the things they worked on). My point was that the crappy PS2 collections were done mostly by Terminal Reality. I have both Fatal Fury Anthologies and I love them both, espeically the second (though pity it was censored, even with the in game settings set to Japanese).

Terminal Reality worked on them. I would imagine SNK Classics v. 0 PSP having better emulation since it's G1M2 (then again, their Data East Wii Collection had some issues, mostly with sound), but that's not NeoGeo. I heard the rotating controls are awkward with that collection, though it does have auto and manual options for it.

Apparently, this is just an officially branded Dingoo.

There are even points where the game pauses during the middle of gameplay and has to load. After experiencing that, I basically tossed the game back on the shelf. Not bad for the $5 price I paid for the game new/sealed, but I would have been severely disappointed if I paid full-price for it when it was new (what, $20 or $30?). On that note, if anyone has a Five-Below nearby, I snagged the SNK compilations there. I know my local one still has the World Heroes anthology. If you really want to try these out, that's probably about as cheap as you will get (five bucks, no shipping).

Well it could have more powerful hardware inside. The current crop of android based portable emulator playing handhelds have some nice specs (Yinlips & JXD S7100). The Dingo feels pretty underpowered to me.

This hardware upgrade would come in handy for emulating more powerful retro consoles if this device can be modified via firmware or something.

SNKP didn't announce anything for licensing the SNK and NeoGeo name, roms etc for my PVG Tech arcade bartop machine.

SNKP has done stuff like this before, so this thing seems very possible.

For the SNKP bartop machine when it was announced, almost every mockup pic of the unit was different. Different side, control panel, marquee art. Different and some very weird numbers of buttons and placement.

No mention of it all from SNKP. Yet these were sold officially in the United States and even in major retailers such as CostCo.

Here's mine:

A real deal would have probably had the correct font for the SNK and Neo-Geo logos, as well as the word Playmore.
Now I'm pretty sure of this being fake. Too bad.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Why? A lot of outlicensed/outsourced products don't even have company x's name on the cover.
