1944 - The Loop Master

Post by JBC »

I know yall've played this one - just thought i'd start up a thread about it. I love this game to no end. It's very long and the graphics are awesome. I love the scoring system and the music is the shit. A great addition to the series. :)

Personaly I really don't like the newer versons of 194X series as much as the older games due to the fact that capcom made them to much like "the other shooters" by merging the loop button with the all conqouring bomb attack. I perfered it when it kept to it's unique style with just looping or when bombs tookthe player vitality to use hence thats why I love 1942, 43 and 43 kai.

I know what you mean - but i totally appreciate it's longevity and it's variation over the originals. It's cool to have a change of pace every once in a while.

Though i will admit it's funny that 'The Loop Master' has a dumbed down looping system as compared to before.

I wish more shmups where as long as this one really. It would've really helped out Mars Matrix to be a bit longer. Gradius V seems to be just right, though - it's not as long as 1944LM but longer than say, Raystorm or 1 play through any Darius game.

Maybe it's nostalgia, but I've always loved 1943 for NES. I still play it every now and then. There are a bunch of hidden upgrades and bonuses. I don't think I've found them all yet.

Plus the game controls great with the NES Advantage. The autofire dial is helpful, too. I've never liked the charged shot, so setting a decent autofire rate makes the game a lot of fun and doesn't take away any challenge. (Unless you consider thumb soreness part of the experience)

I 2nd the part about the NES Advantage - that controller rocks for almost all shmups on the NES. However, I personally think the charge shot is great, and the Advantage allows you to switch back and forth from auto to standard fire w/o having to shut the autofire off. That's why it's so great w/ a game like 1943.

Opinion about 1944: Pure, unadulterated crap.

Thanks for listening.

Ramus...
There's only one Maddox...so stop trying.

Fruit Loop Master is pretty cool. I like the gameplay, graphics, music, etc.
The only thing that falls a little flat is the "real" lack of powerups. (Pee-shooters with option/pod/fighters/wingmen seems so...not helpfull)

I was thinking it was a bad ending to an otherwise great series ;) IMO, 19XX is the best of the bunch and it's phenomenal. A crying shame it wasn't ported but what can you do. 1943 and 1943-Kai are also top-notch and are the games I play the most in the series (they got great treatment on Capcom Generations pack 1 which everyone here should own!).

He's not the only person on the web with an "offensive" type website...but, he at least has some sort of style.
My advice, take some lessons from him on your quest to be "offensively cool".

Offensively cool? I thought he was being objectively honest. 1944 is fucking horrible.

HAHAHA! I'm not trying to be anyone but myself. I don't care if there is some guy with some website; I just made my dinky site because it was fun. I don't care if anyone likes it or not; I made it for me.

1944 is SHIT. That's what I think. If you like it, good for you.

I have to say this for 1944... it has some great background artwork. Very detailed, and very animated. I wish more shooters had women sunbathing on beaches that run away when your ship gets close. :D

Well, actually I do like it, but I'm not going to argue with you about it. You're entitled to your opinion. I just wanted to point out to you regarding "offensive websites" thats all.

I've never understood what Raizing wanted to achieve with that game. It has nothing in common with their usual style, the difficulty is ludicrous (did anyone manage to 1cc it ?), levels are too short and too numerous, weapon choices are weird and simplistic, if not silly. Too bad, because it does have some style.

1944 is great! Who's going to badmouth names like "Iron Beast Warcry" or those end of level collages? And the music just supports the gameplay so well. The game is too cool not to love. And boss fights where it's the boss that frightens you, not his flowery bullet patterns. I'm beginning to miss those battles.

If you don't expect another 19XX or 1941, then 1944 is still fairly good. I'm just disappointed that Raizing didn't do more with it. Not having a selection of planes ala Battle Garegga or 19XX is a downer. So is having to give up score for using wingmen.

Life bars instead of one-hit wonder ships are a pain.

To its credit- the graphics are nice and stage names are definitely good stuff. The music is simply hot.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Well the 1 hit vs life bar is not the issue for me it's the fact that they turned "Looping" into an all destorying bomb... I perfered it when it was just the plane doing a loop to loop if you catch my drift.

I always figured Raizing went with lots of short stages simply in order to be more like 1943 (which had 16 stages) Of course there's a hell of a lot more variety in 1944's stages than 1943's. Overall the game (1944) really seems to be designed as an homage to the 1980s 19**s. Quite unlike 19XX, which really doesn't have anything in common with the earlier games--where are the loops? Or the side fighters?

Does someone here (or on the Strategy board) want to explain the scoring system or any other nonobvious aspects of 1944? Like all Raizing games I love the music and the hyperdetailed graphics, but I'm finding the game impossible to get far in. Yes, I know it's supposed to be hard, but still :)

I think I have figured out all the basics of the game on my own, including the (very minimalist) powerup system and the fact that most pickups change if you uncover them while in a loop (gold thingies become strawberries, POWs become Takenokos, etc.)

I'd also love a 1941 Strategy thread as I'm absolute pants at that game.

I think this game has great presentation and I concur about the music, but the main weapon is simply just WAY to weak to deal with larger enemies efficienty; especially bosses.

But I still prefer this game over any of the first 3 in the series, which are, IMO, obnoxiously long and tedious. There's no good reason, for example, in 1943 and 1943Kai for the weapon counter-having one in ANY shmup that's as long as those two are is just ridiculous, IMO.

But who knows-if the upcoming Capcom Classics Collection sells well enough maybe Capcom will release another volume and FINALLY give us 1941, 19XX, and 1944.

Telling by the screens, it looks like 1944 is actually a horizontally oriented vertical shmup. Is this correct?

For all interested, there are two short videos of this game-one of the title sequence, and another of the first boss fight, at:

www.ikaruga.co.uk/files/shmups

Unfortunately, I haven't run across any Superplays of this game.
