Can't find any good basic CAVE-type shooters :<

Post by Axmann »

I've been playing Mushihimesama on my PS2, and Jamestown and Blue Wish Resurrection on my PC.

Are there any other good basic CAVE-type shooters for any consoles?

There's PatriotDark; it's also free. There's Crimzon Clover, which is not free. The other stuff made by the Blue Wish Resurrection guy is also pretty CAVE-like (all his games are), and are all free. For "professional", try Bullet Soul (360). Then I'm also going to recommend you get things like Dodonpachi Daioujou and Mushihimesama Futari (both on 360) and just play those for a while.

The Raizing games Battle Garegga, Armed Police Batrider, and Battle Bakraid could be considered "CAVE-like", due to Ibara and such, and the same could be said for the Toaplan games V-V and Batsugun; those five are arcade games, though Garegga and Batsugun have fairly good Saturn ports.

The other way around.
Ibara features typical Raizing gameplay. Not "CAVE-like" at all.

Ssssssh.

We're trying to expand the guy's horizons past Cave-exclusive stuff. :P

If you can find it, GwangeDash is a neat mashup of various games in a Cave-like method. And maybe XOP. Enjoy.

And that's exactly why emphasize should be put on them being Raizing games!
Variety is the spice of life. :)

To the author:
Raizing shooters belong to the same type of sub-genre though, so they shouldn't be considered too different.
Great games. :)

For PC, if you like BWR, try its other variants (BW, BWR+) and Eden's Edge/Aegis. The latter are more inspired by Mushi than DDP or what have you. ZenIchi is another good one, though I guess it's more MUSHA-like (?).

For consoles, if you want a mix of Raizing and CAVE, MMP & Pink Sweets (X360) is the way to go. Of course there are all the CAVE ports: Futari, ESPG2, Deathsmiles 1 & 2X, and so forth. DDP has a good PSX port.

Well poop. Shows how good I am at DDP. IIRC, there's also the DonPachi PSX port. Haven't played it, myself.

Zillion Beatz, Zenichi, Crimson Clover

BWR & Eden's Aegis is a good start

As others have said try some non CAVE type Shooters. Either grab mame and play some of the different games from each shmup dev or try some doujins which tend to mix things up abit.

Futari Black Label is maybe the best game of all time, so I wouldn't worry too much about the price.

It is glorious.

Buy Mushihimesama Futari immediately. I actually just got done telling someone else to buy it in a different thread. My copy was 80, I would gladly pay upward of 100.

Futari is an absolute essential and should be the first 360 shooter in anyone's collection (provided they don't hate Cave). I wouldn't call it my favorite, but if I had to pick only one 360 shooter it would be Futari. The game is just amazingly well designed and there's a ton of content. Original, Maniac, and Ultra/God modes all play VERY differently and have completely different patterns. Furthermore the port job by M2 is incredible.

As an aside, stay away from DoDonPachi ports, they're both ass. Mame is definitely the way to play DDP (and you definitely should play it!)

Yeah, Futari 360 is probably the best console game ever made.

Last night I showed Mushi Futari to a friend and his 10-year old while SSF4 was updating on the PS3.
I made them play it in novice with me till the 4th stage.

They yawned, and the kid begged for us to go back to SSF4.
The guy wasn't too different either.
My fiancée was angry at me for "blocking the fun".

There is no hope.

I hope you were playing novice ultra, because otherwise you really were blocking the fun.

The mode he was playing in is irrelevant. The fact of the matter is, when you have people wanting to play SFIV over any game, they are beyond hope.

[ off-topic venting ]
The fact of the matter is that people do not get interested in shmups unless it happens on their own, by reasons that concern their own self counciousness and triggered by some mysterious factor that revolves around sheer fascination and/or the drive to push forward against the odds.

The genre is pretty much dead and buried on the eyes of the regular video game player.

[ on topic ]
Only ones I can think of are the Blue Wish games.

I hate to admit it but that's pretty true from my experience. I once sent a friend from another forum basically a free copy of the game and within a week he was back with Assassin's Creed.

I'd pick Street Fighter IV over any other fighter besides Guilty Gear of Blazblue, personally.

And I agree, people just don't like shooters anymore, or think they're "beyond" that sort of game. But if you sat me down in front of Novice Original, I'd be bored to tears, too. I've played Novice Ultra with a couple people who've really enjoyed it, and those people were skeptical or had no real experience with the genre.

Guys, we're talking about normal people here.
Unless there's at least some previous notion on the genre, Novice Original is already too much for them.

One of my coworkers, after seeing me play a bunch of shooters at work, decided he was interested in DDP. He did this of his own volition and seems to be pretty into it, which made me happy. However it is worth noting that 3 or 4 days after he'd started playing he excitedly told me about how he finally beat the first stage without continuing.

I did my best to be supportive and encourage him to keep pressing on but GOD DAMN

You have too little faith in human beings. If I was playing a game where there was no risk or challenge I would get bored fast no matter how "casual" I was.
Not suggesting you should start them on God Mode scoreplay, but come on.

I remember a moment from the history of shmups documentary - SWY said the way he was attracted to the genre was by watching someone else dominate DDP. He played it for himself and was surprised by how well he did. By only giving your fiancee and friends the easiest modes to play you're acting like those parents who insist on everything in their house having padded edges so their kids don't, god forbid, get a scratch.

Let them live a little; challenge them!

Did I underestimate them? It could be so...
Anyway, I didn't want them to die right away, so I threw Novice Original. I thought they would be attracted by the explosions, the gems and the few bullets. I never played Novice Ultra myself, maybe the timing wasn't right, etc...

Just for the record, my future wife's favorite shmup is DDP DOJ.
She loves the music for the 1st stage and the colorful bullets

A lot of the appeal of Futari is the spectacle. Novice Ultra has the spectacle coupled with ease of play. I would suggest trying it yourself, and if you like it then ask your wife if she'll give it another shot sometime.

@ Kollision

Next time you get the opportunity, connect your PC to your main TV and put on Jamestown, Its a great game for getting ppl intrested in the genre. Good graphics, sound, diffrent control methods, Although the diffrent ship types arnt perfect (i havnt tried the new DLC ships) but they are all unique and fun to play casually.

What makes it so good for noobs is that its bridges the gap between casual and hardcore really well, since the game is quite easy in the way each level is seperate, but there are harder difficulties and the guantlet mode which is a std 5 level start to finish mode. The (offline :( ) 4 player best part is co-op which players still alive can resurrect other players who have lost their lives.

Basically there is a challenge there but its alll in bite sized chunks, kinda like Super Meat Boy. Challenge mode is intresting aswell. The score system is very simple but intresting instead of how hardcore / CAVE shmups do it which is too conveluted for noobs

IMO apart from Jamestown I always recommend noobs play doujin shmups which have loads of lives (Crimson Clover) or a shield / autobomb (BWR and Zenichi, Sonic Ironstorm) Its how I got into shmups and is great as a first forry into 1CC play.

Also maybe something like Score Rush would be fun as co-op, especially for getting arena shooter players into shmups

What all these games have in commen is that they are full on shmups which due to lives etc keep noobs in playing and enjoying the game for longer instead of std shmups where theyll just spam bombs to keep alive or get game over in 30 seconds. OFC there are novice modes but the fun experince is gimped imo. Or 2 player co-op which most games like Raiden is just about over powered weapons and killing everything as soon as it enters the screen. Think of it this way, if playing Raiden 2 player or Futari Novice isnt fun for us guys, it probably isnt for them too

At OP. If you want CAVE clones just go for CAVE games (still recommend BWR, Eden Aegis as your first 1CC attempt) Deathsmiles, Dodonpachi Resurrection PAL, it works on US 360s, its dirt cheap nowadays since the game bombed, (Its only a tenner new in my local game store)

Highly recommend you buy Mushihimisama Futari and Esp Galuda 2. $40 is a snip considering they are fantastic games and solid HD 360 ports compared to most other 360 ports

Crimzon Clover is hard as hell, dunno how that would get people into the genre.

I think Twinkle Star Sprites is probably the most likable introduction to shooters. Everyone loves that game. I've played it with all sorts of people, and we always end up playing it for hours. I guess it doesn't transition well into other games since it's so unique, though.
