Would this 3rd party hard drive be OK for my XBOX 360?...

Post by dave4shmups »

I'd rather not pay $100.00 for Microsoft's 250GB hard drive for my slim XBOX 360, and I found this on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/60GB-Hard-Drive-X ... 45&sr=8-12

The customer reviews all look positive, but I don't want to damage my 360.

What kind of insane price is this ? The 250GB and 320GB Slim versions (the official ones!) are available for around the very same price over here. I just bought a new 320GB Slim HDD for under 50 EUR shipped.

I've seen the official 320GB HDD for the 360 slim with an MSRP of $139.99USD at my local Best Buy (if it's on sale at BB, then the price drops down to $129.99).

It is a third-party drive after all and it's probably like all the other third party video game devices on the market, either you love them or you hate them, and judging by the user feedback on the comment session, people are loving it so far. Though when the first-party is actually Microsoft, you know can't trust that much either  .

Have you considered picking up an used genuine HDD on eBay?

What do you mean by genuine HDD?? I have looked at 3rd party hard drives on Ebay, but they aren't much cheaper then the one I just listed. As long as I don't get corrupt save data, and as long as it doesn't damage my 360 somehow, I really don't care who manufactures it.

A Microsoft-branded hard disk drive, used. I pick most of my stuff used out of eBay, and I rarely if ever, run into any sort of problems if I know what i'm buying and if the seller has a good reputation (lots of positive feedback).

It'll be fine. All hdds are generally decently made - otherwise they'd fail immediately. At the end of the day we also have cloud saves today too. The only noticeable difference could be sound - but it will probably be fine these days :)

If you're picky then a faster drive will help very slightly with loading times and could see a benefit with the odd texture in streaming games [rage/skyrim] although at such degrees of finesse you're getting into territories of memory management too etc.

Thanks for the advice! Yeah, I figured that they are all decently made; but I wanted to make sure. Ebay sellers who sell the Microsoft 250gb hard drive argue that the other ones that are made in China are bad. But what the heck isn't made in China these days?
