Kyuiin (AKA "that vacuum cleaner shmup") available on US PSN

Post by Estebang »

This slipped under my radar, and apparently everyone else's too.

Monkey Paw Games' latest PS1 shmup release on the American PSN is Kyuiin, a game I've heard barely any mention of anywhere, even around these parts. Which really should not be the case; it's an excellent cute-em-up with unusual mechanics comparable to Harmful Park. It's obviously low-budget, but the graphics display a lot of life and imagination, and there's a good effort at making the task of scoring fairly deep. I understand the negativity surrounding Monkey Paw's earlier release GaiaSeed, even if I don't agree with it, but the same complaints can in no way be lodged against Kyuiin. Anyone with a PSN device and an interest in horzies should absolutely pick this up for its lunch-level price.

GAME EXPLANATION:

- Two difficulties: Easy and Hard.

- 5 shot weapons: Laser, 3-way vulcan, homing, rapid, and the weak starting shot. Maximum power level is 3. You can take two hits before dying: the first removes your hose and all weapon powerups. You regain this hit upon picking up a medkit, after which you can again pick up weapon upgrades.

- When not shooting, the wiggling vacuum hose can automatically suck up enemies smaller than yourself and certain types of bullets. Armored enemies and large projectiles cannot be sucked. Sucking up enemies fills up your super meter; when full, a powerful and defensive super attack can be used. You can stock up to 2 super attacks at once.

- There's a rear attack with its own button. It's not worth quite as many points as suction, but it's the only way to get the maximum possible amount of points from large/armored enemies and bosses.

- Each method of attack is worth a different amount of points for each enemy. Here's a universally applicable chart in descending order. The super attack gives no points at all.

MOST VALUABLE
Vacuum
Back attack
Shot
Super attack
LEAST VALUABLE

If anyone shows interest, I'll open a high score thread after I achieve a decent run. (playing on a PSP)

One bump before I let this thread die.

Nothing pithy to add except that this was my second PSN purchases after Castlevania SotN. And I've put a lot more hours in to Kyuiin. It's maybe my second favorite cuteemup after Star Parodier.

Pretty good and underrated (or maybe just unknown) 2D shooter. Ugly player sprites, but otherwise not bad looking. And it plays well, too.
This is most likely the first and only shmup in which you ride a vacuum cleaner :D
It's also quite rare on PS1, even though it got a "best" reprint. However, due to its obscurity it's not very expensive.
Worth getting, especially if you like comedy sidescrollers like Parodius and Harmful Park.

Or you could just download it off PSN for six bucks, which was the whole focus of this thread.

I will start a high score thread after I become sufficiently experienced with the game.

haven't played it yet, but it looked fun, and based on your write up, think I'll head over to psn now. Would love to see Harmful Park on psn as well, good game and deserves a wider audience.

Yeah, it's cheap and a good way to give the game a try, but physical copies are just so much better: They aren't locked to a single console, have no DRM and you can actually sell them or give them away.

I agree that physical copies are always superior, but there's the issue of owning a Japanese/modded Playstation.

Gah, having serious trouble with a scoring run, even on Easy. The difficulty really ramps up after Stage 2, and there's a hellish "squeeze your massive hitbox through the snowflake maze of death" section later on.

Thanks for the suggestion of this unknown to me game. Is there a list anywhere of shmups released on PSN?

Does the scoring revolve around vacuuming up any bullets/small enemies and destroying larger ones?

I explained the scoring in the first post. It's entirely based around using the right kinds of attacks to kill enemies: vacuum for the small enemies, back shot for everything else. This isn't always practical--swarms of armored enemies are almost impossible to safely back shot--so you have to make good judgment as to when you shouldn't use it. You also want to avoid using the super attack as much as possible, since it produces no points. Vacuuming bullets produces some paltry points, but it's far more useful as a defensive tactic.

Keep in mind that your hitbox is HUGE: as big as your entire sprite minus the vacuum hose, and vertically tall. The game shows it to you during the snowflake maze.

I think this is a complete list of PSOne shmups available on the US PSN:

R-Type Delta
R-Types
GaiaSeed
Cho Aniki (PS1)
Shienryu
Kyuiin
Dezaemon Kids
Sonic Wings Special
Dezaemon Plus

...and Sonic Wings Special is where it's at. Shame about the input lag on PS3.
There's a thread already. I kind of like Gaia Seed and Rapid Angel. Just sort of. Enough to give this one a try.

How much is there and when does it occur? Which games exhibit lag? PS1 games downloaded from PSN or real PS1 discs, too? I don't notice any. Then again my display setup is lag-free, so there is none added by slow image processing (which many hdtvs suffer from). Has anyone with a lag free display (eg a CRT) actually measured this or is it all rumours started by people with bad displays?
