Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone on these forums has any reliable contacts with people who can supply parts / full mod job on Sega Saturn JP model to give full EDTV output (240p / 480p) through the Saturns internal VGA processing.I know this mod is possible. Any help much appreciated.
Thans.

Re: Can anybody help - Sega Saturn VGA mod
Matt,
You do know that the Saturn will output VGA as part of it's architecture.... it doesn't need modding in that way. However this VGA mode is software enabled and I'm not aware of any software that takes advantage of it.
AFAIK the mod is a saturn din to dsub15 cable.
VGA mode will be 480p so you can forget any 240p "heaven".

Re: Can anybody help - Sega Saturn VGA mod
I've yet to see someone do it.
The saturn can be programmed so that it outputs vga but this mode is so restrictive that even if you could patch games then they probably wouldn't run, and if they did they'll likely crash or bugs-a-million.
There has been conjecture that if you sidestep the video encoder in the saturn you may be able to put together a signal. I've never seen a mod myself though where someone did this even for a 15khz signal. However, as opposed to your typical interpretation of a 31khz signal for vga I'm also not familiar with what signal you'd need for EDTV...
... it sounds a bit like the saturn's 24khz mode that only saw implementation in a couple of games/menus? ... Again a software/hardware limitation you can do little about if the games aren't programmed that way direct from the console...
... I'm not saying its definitely impossible, but I do imagine that the code effects what is either fed to the video processor chips or what the video processor chips are even used for, basically resulting in a lower resolution picture before the video encoder even does anything at all... One area you might find success in I suppose is from stopping interlacing... but again, I don't think I've ever seen this done with a mod?
Do point me in the direction of anything you find though!

Re: Can anybody help - Sega Saturn VGA mod
just a tiny correction:
that was 15khz 480i, not 24khz. No TV (composite, s-video or RGB) could display a 24khz signal. 24khz would mean 384p.it sounds a bit like the saturn's 24khz mode that only saw implementation in a couple of games/menus?
Re: Can anybody help - Sega Saturn VGA mod
Sorry yes, not for home but for the stv/titan though something got used for this didn't it, or am I completely mixed up?Fudoh wrote:just a tiny correction:that was 15khz 480i, not 24khz. Re: Can anybody help - Sega Saturn VGA mod
I don't know, but from the STV specs here http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=711 it's got only 15khz video modes (240 lines progressive, 448 and 480 lines interlaced).
Re: Can anybody help - Sega Saturn VGA mod
Yeah it had a specified 24hz 'medium' res mode too ... I thought it was used, but maybe this was just a theortical mode rather than practical...
More recently some people have gotten 31 khz signal out of the machine via a software demo/hack:
http://wellby.dyndns.org/dnl/sat_demo.rar
http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/sh ... hp?t=20674
(see dr.willy posts)
Never tried it myself... but it did kick off some speculation over how you could hardware mod a system, but I presume the function depends upon software instruction as well as hardware operation, since I never saw a working mod for general use.
