I can't beat gradius 2nd level boss after a 100 try.
Beat it once or twice with sheer luck and that's all.
watched videos,tried every combination of options and speed-up I still can't beat it.

I feel like the worst player on earth

yes gradius 1 I play it on MAME (japan version).
I kinda suck at all shmups though but this one I'm real bad at it.
And it saddens me cause I love this game,the music and everything,it just feels very hard for me and way less permissive than say cave games.

What exactly is your problem with it? If you're dying on the cube rush, just stick to the left side of the screen, equip laser and arrange the options like this:

ok I got it now and I feel even dumber
this position was absolutely not working too,I tried 20 times in a row always got pushed in the middle and dying.

but

I turned autofire off and I made it easily 3 times in a row.
Somehow lasers with autofire behave badly and I never noticed it since I always played with autofire.
Normal shot without autofire is really a pain for me.

Yes, autofire screws the laser. But, instead of pausing the game and messing with the config menu, you should assign a separate button to switch autofire on and off on the fly. I also use the same button for both fire and missiles. Makes the game much easier to play.

My button layout is like this:

Q: Use powerups
W: Shot/Missiles
A: Toggle autofire

Also, make sure you add some autofire delay so the shots aren't too close together.

yeah, if you are used to the NES gradius, where autofire works VERY well with the laser, it's a rude shock. Also oddly enough there's an ingame method to activate autofire in the NES game (wrap the powerup meter when the 1000s digit is zero i think, or was it 10,000s?).

I make a point of grabbing the laser quickly, to avoid the need to use autofire at all.
