What cities, towns, or places are best for me?

Post by BER »

Please suggest as many cities, towns, or places as you can that have at least most the following factors (in my order of preference):
  1. Reliable DSL connection or better available
  2. Solitary feeling
  3. Quiet
  4. Arcade with at least one popular shmup (like Ketsui, Mushihimesama, and maybe DoDonPachi)
  5. Cool weather year-round (72 degrees Fahrenheit at most)
  6. Great air quality
  7. Necessary businesses (like grocery stores, shopping centers, and libraries) nearby
  8. Good traffic flow on the road
  9. Nearby available parking spaces at home
  10. Not overcrowded
If you need me to clarify the meaning of any of these factors, please let me know. Also, if your suggestion doesn't include all of these factors, at least it should include those near the top of the list.

(This is one of the exercises in the book What Color Is Your Parachute? The author told me to show this list to everyone I know.)

St louis isn't all that bad. There is an import store which has an astro city or 2 (not an arcade).. And it gets hotter than 72 degrees at least 3 months of the year.

Other than that everything is cool.

Burlingame, CA. There's an import shop, a hobby shop with Dimahoo(if it's still there), and pretty much matches the factors.

Ahhh Burlingame, I really really need to head back there. Haven't been in a while. That is an awesome import store.

Pretty sure the hobby shop is gone. I went there about a month ago and they were selling off everything at 50% off or less. I asked about buying that Dimahoo board, but they wouldn't do it.

Seattle meets every one of those criteria. The arcade is my storage unit, but hey. if you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself.

Ridgeland (a suburb of Jackson), Mississippi. It's got all that and is quite a beautiful place.

There are sites that can help you with this. The only one that comes to mind is http://findyourspot.com, though.

In the unlikely event that any Ohio cities show up in your matches, feel free to ignore them.

EDIT: Just remembered http://bestplaces.net

That store was pretty cool too. Sorry to hear it's going out of business. Dang, 50% off, I missed out.

Some parts of inland CA gets hot as hell. Around SF it is cool most of the time. Thanks to the cold air from the Pacific coming into the bay or something like that.

South California would be good for the temperatures (70-something most of the time). Cities such as San Diego, Malibu, Long Beach, or any in Orange County would be good. Cities in CA to stay away from would be Fresno and the fittingly named Thermal with their triple digit temps.

Unfortunately I can't recommend Ohio to you, since lately the heat indexes have topped the 100 mark (101 this past Sunday- higher than usual, but the weather here has been full of WTFs lately). Furthermore, arcades here are nothing special.

Well, the traffic can be pretty crappy at times, but other than that I agree. Temperate climate, plenty of places to get away from people (near mountains, fairly close to rainforest). If you're fairly far away from the center of town it's fairly easy to find parking, and even downtown there usually aren't huge mobs of people. As for arcades, yeah, PaCrappa's storage unit is about the only good one...though there are Raiden Fighters and Metal Slug in a place on the waterfront.

Thanks for responding, all. I assumed that all of the places suggested here have a fast and reliable Internet connection and none of them have an arcade with at least one popular shmup (but maybe there is one in Southern California!). Then I was lazy and used bestplaces.net, which Davey recommended, to help me determine how well your suggested places fit with my criteria.

For now, I am most interested in the following places (with the most interesting one as #1). All of these are in the United States:
  1. Burlingame, CA
  2. Seattle, WA
  3. Orange County, CA
  4. San Diego, CA
  5. Long Beach, CA
When I feel like moving, I'll keep these places in mind first.

By the way, I am surprised that there's no place in Japan that meets most of my criteria.
