Hi, I recently managed to get a new copy of Raiden Project which I'm really stoked with (but still waiting for the machine to play it on to arrive...) and the manual is pretty easy to follow really, except for this last page! What does the quyirky pair of illistrations say? I presume it's something to do with TATE-ing the monitor? Or letting the Gremlins escape from the TV? Or something else completely?
Thanks if you can translate...

LTC is right. The first pic says "Absolutely don't tate a regular TV!" The second pic says "If you decide to make this bad decision then...." And then it shows that picture that I can't figure out whats going in (confused, sweating TV?.. I dunno..)
Ok, thanks for the help. All makes sense now. Thankfully I have an LCD TV so no need to worry about this.... right?

I have had my regular tv in tate mode a couple of time.
Nothing serious had happend but it can get a little warm, so I always put some books under so it stands so it gets more air.

Ha ha, I think I understand. Based on the Miclus's expression and the TV's exasperation, the complete sentence is: "If you decide to make this bad decision then [please enjoy Raiden the way it was meant to be enjoyed! But we warned you.]...."
I've had my TV tate'd for a while before, and nothing happened. It's true that most TVs have vents in a position apropos to being upright, so the TV might get a little warm if there are no vents on its sides.

Yup, that's gotta be it! Those pesky miclus thingies...!

I have to admit, if I ever was convinced to have one of my shmups in a retail package with a manual, this is the reason why I'd do it. To add goofy illustrations of TVs falling over from poor TATE procedure :P

I wonder if there's an archive of these somewhere...

These are pretty common with Japanese goods, I believe. I have a Tamiya R/C car, the manuals are full of funny SD drawings of the car, the battery, etc. with warnings and tips. I've seen them in other Japanese electronics I have as well - TV, stereo, DVD player ...
Most likely nothing. Although it seems to be harmless, TV manufacturers don't design regular TVs to be on their sides. If by chance something were to happen, Seibu would be able to say "We told them not to do it! Look at our Miclus warning!" It's probably just that Seibu didn't want to be on the hook if you're using an old soviet CRT from 1983 that catches on fire when rotated.

Once it's up and running in a stable state you've got nothing to worry about.
The danger's in the act of rotation itself, mainly big CRTs where the heavy tube might come loose from it's mountings, the guns get misaligned etc. Also the danger of putting your back out, dropping it on your foot, getting trapped with it jammed against a wall etc, as I discovered with this fine 27" example:

Man I have never, ever had the slightest issue with any TV I've ever tated. I honestly can't imagine what could go wrong unless it managed to completely seal off the only vent on the entire case.

It's most likely saying something like "Please don't rotate your TV it might break, but if you do, for gods sakes rotate it the proper direction (counterclockwise)"
