Cyvern plus?

Post by Vamos »

So how much is actually known about this title? bar one single superplay on superplay.co.uk it seems like this title barely exists . Anyone know anything about it?

Nope, never seen one for sale. I'm assuming it's a unique game, not a mode you can activate with a secret code in the regular one.

Will probably be stupidly expensive even if one does turn up tho.

I confirmed that this was a hack that a collector made, not an official release.

Kaneko's last game was the creepily titled Hiza no Ue no Partner: Kitty on Your Lap in 1998.

If this is the case then how hard would it be to track down the creator and get this onto mame?

Considering it was made almost a decade ago and I don't know who hacked it, probably very unlikely.

Asked local collectors and PCB shops, the story is the same. Japanese aren't known to share.

Its basically cyvern is raizing style and cyvern plus is more cave style, smaller hitbox more bullet hell , more points to be had . Look for nrks superplay of both cyvern and plus on superplay.co.uk to see the differences.

From what I could decipher off the long since deleted ner-k page...

1 Loop - 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 2-4 / 2-5

New TLB

Dragons were re-balanced:
Red - reduced hitbox, banish strengthened, sub-weapon reduced
Blue - banish strengthened
Green - drift reduced, sub-weapon strengthened

C Autofire changed to 30hz

Boss life bars

Score/point and bullet/rank tweaks

Top score (only) is saved by battery backup

Ending Credits "Special Thanks" section added 8 additional names including CFK-NRK

That doesn't sound like the most reputable of sources tbh ;-)

I've heard some right BS from collectors and PCB shops alike... and terms get mixed up over the years.

Some would consider it a 'hack' if it required you to 'hack' your Cyvern board by replacing a rom, even if that rom was from Kaneko for example.... On the other hand PCB shops are quick to try and sell you hacks as legitimate products. When it's all chinese whispers terminology and what people really meant can get mixed up.

Maybe it is, but even so if it's adding things like Lifebars it's more than just a trivial hack, the code changes would be interesting to see.

This isn't the US. In Japan, shops won't sell you a hack or an EPROM copy without labeling it as such. Phoenix CPS-II games are worthless in Japan and stores won't buy them back. a CPS-I game with copied EPROMs would get you 1% of an actual board in buy back value at any of these shops.

Many of these guys have been around before anyone on this board bought a PCB or cab. One guy in particular owns 4000 PCBs. another owns almost every Sega board variation (who also works at Mak). I tend to trust these guys as they are the scene in Japan and they've provided stuff to me that few have heard of.

Look at the Garegga and Batrider hacks being done by a friend of mine who just does it for fun. How about a hack of Fantasy Zone II to use the Mark III FM sound? There are plenty of these out there that the Japanese do not share.

I just watched the superplay. Looks interesting, but the software clearly has trouble with the object count, and it'll often slow down to 10 FPS or something ungodly like that. Doesn't look like it'd be so fun to play. Also your shot created so many objects that sometimes your sprite or the HUD disappears :V

Shou, thanks for the info about the Japan arcade scene. What do you like/dislike about Japan's arcade collector scene? Do they have meets at arcades and loan out boards to one another? Would love to hear more tidbits about your life as an arcade collector in Japan.

Thank you for your insights!
