"Of those of you who own an Xbox right now, how many use Live Arcade? Anyone? Bueller? Yeah, thought so. You have to buy a hard to find disc to even access Live Arcade and then you have to pay between $10 and $20 to play some rinky-dink game like Dig Dug. Yawn. That's all about to change, though: The Xbox 360 will have Live Arcade integrated right into the box, and it will pop up on the home page of the dashboard; hit a button, and you're in like Flynn. You don't even need a Live account...or a credit card to browse, buy, and play freely. But will there be anything worth playing? We're breathless with anticipation. We got the inside scoop from Greg Canessa, group manager of Xbox Casual Games, who says that while the lineup hasn't been officially set in stone yet, there will be a wide variety of titles and styles, from quirky independents to big names to spiffed up retro classics from consoles of a bygone era. The Atari 2600, TurboGrafix, Sega Saturn...even the Dreamcast were mentioned. Dare we dream? Next gen Live Arcade sounds like the real thing."

I'll believe it when I can play a souped up version of Panzer Dragoon 1. With mip mapping, interpolation, anisotropic filtering, antialiasing, specular highlighting, bump mapping, phong shading, tessellation and light sourcing at 60 FPS.

We have had all of this being promised since the previous generation.

Forget that (I'll believe it when I see it) but since when is Dig Dug a "rinky-dink" game. I hate fucking mainstream gaming journalists, they all sound like idiots. Go back to school and get a degree and a clue.

Wait, what? They're going to have games from old-era consoles like the Atari, Dreamcast, SNES?

Uh, first of all. That would require MAJOR permission from Sega and Nintendo. Second of all, emulation is already on the current xbox console. Microsoft obviously know this, so why pay $400+ for a next-generation console to play dead-generation games?

Nintendo wouldn't give permission because they are doing their own thing with their old games, so they definitely wouldn't consider it. As for the other companies (Sega, NEC and Atari), I think that they'd almost certainly be interested in making money off their old properties.

I think you misunderstand. Anyone can release games over the new 360 service. It is the same as buying a game at the store. ONe company already announced a actual new game they'd be making for download. If Konami chooses to remake SNES games for this service then they can. Obviously Microsoft can't though :P

Exactly, and like the Revolution's retro download service, people who want these kinds of games probably already own these systems.
