The most unfitting music in a shmup
The most unfitting music in a shmup for me was the mid-boss of the fnal stage of Hydorah.
Wacky accordion music or something...

Biometal SNES
The 2Unlimited Soundtrack just don´t fit. The game was crap too. Also the Score of 1942 is horrible. Sounds like the soundchip has some serious issues.

Blasphemy, the Runex theme rocks!
Re: The most unfitting music in a shmup
I've never found Salamander's bouncy stage 2 or 4 BGMs suitable, in comparison to either the game's sci-fi style or the much darker stage 1, 3, 6 and boss BGMs.
I guess the feeling was mutual at Konami since those (along with stage 5's) are exactly the ones replaced in Life Force, the awesome "Thunderbolt" being a real standout. Unfortunately Life Force, unlike the still very sharp-looking Salamander, looks like shit these days with its half-hearted palette swaps and garish colours, so the audio benefit is firmly cancelled out.
Come to think of it, it sounds awful too with the gimmicky "talking car c.1986" announcer.

Master of Weapon stage 5. Just retarded music, it seems the composer was having a seizure or something.

Both Truxton games. You see the skull motif thinking you're in for the most metal shooter of all time only for an overwhelmingly whimsical soundtrack to try and sedate you while shit is trying to kill you everywhere. Also, R-Type is one of the darkest shmups out there, but you'd never guess it while rocking out to The Third Lightning's soundtrack. Also, Vimana's Bit Man is hysterical. It's almost like a sound zebra finches would make.

Zed Blade.
Thread over.
Still, it's a guilty pleasure, and notable for being one of Manabu Namiki's first soundtracks.

2nd stage in Border Down. Goddamn those first few bars are so obnoxious it's like punishment for dying.
Seriously I don't know what crack they were smoking when they put a 70's sitcom theme in a futuristic badass shooter.

that's the best BGM in the whole game!

And I don't think it's unfitting at all...

I wouldn't go that far, but I do think it's a pretty fitting and enjoyable track.Kollision wrote:Are you serious?Darkseed wrote:2nd stage in Border Down.

Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

Re: Biometal SNES
1942's main theme sounds like some guy spitting into a microphone and another one spamming a dog whistle.
I love Zed Blade's BGM- especially stage 3. And I wouldn't give up the Border Down tracks for anything else. "No Good Place" from stage 2 in BDRemix owns.

QFT. Why in the blue hell did EA have to get rid of the Neo-Geo BGM tracks? The PS port is sacrilege on these grounds, and also for the framerate cockups (*cough* the stage 3 boss is impossible on PS1). I'm not saying that the alternate music is shit, it's just that I'd have preferred the original arcade tunes be kept in. The new tunes should have gone into a different game.louisg wrote: PSX port of Viewpoint

Re: The most unfitting music in a shmup
The North American version of Bio Metal has that hilarious soundtrack where all the music is replaced by sports jams like Are You Ready For This.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

The elevator music found in Border Down. The weird-ass music in G Darius. Some of the happy sounding tunes in Grind Stormer. Oh, and Truxton.

Of course you realize, this is implying that it's completely normal to be shooting at spaceships shaped like fish. Against psychedelic backgrounds no less.Austin wrote:The weird-ass music in G Darius.

I haven't put much time into it, but the OST in Giga Wing 2 was quite disappointing given the intensity of the game. Nothing like the great tunes in the original.
I hope I'm wrong, because I want to play it soon.

Re: The most unfitting music in a shmup
Apparently MAME causes P-47 Aces music to glitch horribly for some reason - it's not supposed to sound like that. The actual B-SHIP music is some quite generic synth-guitar boss music, but still - it's actual boss music. During STGT one of my savestates (shmupmame 3b) randomly caused it to unglitch. Slot 'v', load it as soon as you load the game; if you load any other savestate before it, or let the game run for long enough for any other music to play, the music most likely won't unglitch in the savestate. It also goes back to being glitched as soon as the next track starts.ratikal wrote:Is this a shmup or Crazy Bus?
Of course, none of that helps making P47A a less horrible tankhumping abomination.

I always thought Giga Wing's soundtrack was terrible, but 2's was great. Stage 3 boss music is intense.
Maybe we should just make one shmup music thread. We have 3 or so active right now....ebarrett wrote:Repent!Austin wrote:The weird-ass music in G Darius.

Re: The most unfitting music in a shmup
The contrast between highly aggressive, vicious looking enemies and high-spirited music is just one of many things that makes Truxton special. You could say the bright colors also clash with the heavy metal "skulls on everything" look; but it still works amazingly well.ChainsawGuitarSP wrote:Both Truxton games.
There's just something about classic TOA shooters, they'll beat you down with brutal difficulty; but they sound so friendly at the same time. No matter how badly I lose, somehow I'm always left with a warm feeling inside.

The music isn't bad per se (Zuntata!!), I just don't think it fits with the game at all.

Re: The most unfitting music in a shmup
I normally love ridiculously upbeat music to go with my shooting (see the Truxton comment above); but Gunbird 2's chirpy, hyper-saccharine soundtrack was always just a bit too much for me. In terms of actual sugar, it'd be like having a king-size Zero bar when a small piece of chocolate would satisfy...urrgh.
Granted, I don't think it's necessarily bad and it's really not that unfitting considering the game's overall tone; but still, I just think they went a tad too far.

I found Baryon: Future Assault's music pretty unfitting. Near-awful because you can barely hear it but more so unfitting.
Also, I'm with the comments about 1942. Spitting and whistling is about right.
