Best boss musics of all time

Post by Captain »

EDIT-I put the Gradius Gaiden boss music here as a start.

I find that it has a great start and then gets casual and relaxing with a few fast paced moments- 7/10.

Nice jaunty boss tune. Manages to cast an ominous mood without losing its playful tone.

I like that Gaiden saves its more dramatic BGM for very late in the game, sticking to classic Konami Kukeiha Club-style upbeat tunes for the most part (Gradius V's OST ended up rather bland with its near-constant "epic" tone). It's always a pleasure to hear "Inside Mission" come crashing in after a moment's silence for 9-1's vanquished boss, accompanied by an onslaught of enemies, bullets and crushers.

Loving the New Beat sound.

Of course, Pulstar has the best boss theme of any shoot'em up. I love the riff ripped off Ultravox's Mr. X :P

Pulstar has one of the most EPIC boss themes , but that does not make them the best ones.
I won't continue on this due to derailmenmt. (Was the thread title "Whats the best boss music?")
EDIT And now the title is in fact this.

"Cry Out Enemy" annihilating the upbeat groove in stage 1 as the scenery implodes with almost palpable force is definitely another classic shooter music moment.

Gradius music is rather "meh" to me outside of Salamander. My standards may or may not be unreasonable.

What about Parodius? Those soundtracks are epic.

Tecno Soft have practically too many killer boss BGMs to mention, especially since they often went the extra mile and gave each boss its own unique theme. Late MD into Saturn era is when they really caught fire, imo. TFIV's "Warlike Requiem" (great combination of hammering power chords, galloping pace and a plaintive lead melody) and the brutal Saturn version of Hyper Duel's "Black Angel" come to mind.

I've heard the Metal Squad remix in it before (2010 if not earlier) which sounds completely different from the rest of it implying it's not the creator's work, but other than that it's damn excellent. :D

For some reason I prefer Steel of Destiny even over Metal squad.

Guess it's just my taste...

I also really like this piece even though its not boss music.

Poison of Snake is a classic boss theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVhRD--xyeY
Same goes for Aircraft Carrier: http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=pDbGrpBZ2WM
The Stone-Like from Ikaruga is pretty awesome too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ep5O3r7K1jg

I like Sakimoto's arrangements and original work, what can I say?
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

Tsubazeriai from Akai Katana Shin (any version, really, but the arranged version is insane): http://youtu.be/GRCN_8POWnM

Most boss battle themes in Batrider are WONDERFUL!

Divided by Zero
Nimbus
Let's kick ass together!
Stab and stomp!
Chop U
Spiral Locus

Even if you never played the game, you can tell those are boss battle themes

Great Mahou Daisakusen has two of my favourites

The genius of battle
Bold trap

Touhou has some great ones too, Necrofantasia being my favourite. Especially this arrange version.

Batrider does have some great stuff, as does Garegga.

TF has such bitchin tunes for its time, but... The bosses don't feel epic enough for their own bgm half the time. Just my opinion, of course.

Blackheart has timeless music.
And D gaiden is relaxing...too relaxing...*falls asleep*

Strikers had adrenalinic music.

Shikagami got me the most.

Im neutral on psyviar.

And it has the most hilarious name ever (A hysteric woman goes over the sun).

Strikers 1945 II has a good OST too, Overcoat Technology is a great boss theme.
