I just play Layer Section (Rayforce), and she is so fine

Post by TGK »

She is amazing in fact. I was happy just to look at her. I tried to learn every nuances of her intricate design...

She is easy to please though, I got to stage 4 on 1 credit on my first play, then my second play I got to stage 5. Oh the echoing sound she makes when my missiles hit in stage 5 moves me so deeply...

And her music is so sweet to my ears...

I'll play with her some more tomorrow :P

That was the first game I fired up in my Saturn once I got my ASCII Stick, and yea.. I got up to stage 5 like it was nothing. I remember back when I had trouble clearing stage 2... ahh yes... how times have changed

I'm amazed by how well the game holds up.

I credit fed (4 cred) my last run to see level 6. But I wanna see level 7  . Rayforce, you're so fine you r0xx0rious my mind, how can I bring our affair to the next level baby?

Yea, I am amazed myself. Frankly I developed a quasi antagonizing attitude toward Rayforce before I played it, because I have read so much hype about it. But the hype is justified, it is amazing. Some of the effects in this game is just mind boogling. I never thought this was possible in 2D. Well, technically I could guess how these were done, but I never thought it was feasible time-wise.

Rank system that you have to actively try to thwart. I'll pass on that shit.

Otherwise, pretty fun.

Pretty good game, but I always felt the lock-on system was overemphasized. Locking on and letting loose a bunch of lasers simply isn't as enjoyable as head-on shooting for me.

I played it on MAME, and the rank is just too much for me. I don't mind a little rank, but I think it goes too far when you have to suicide in order to keep it down in order to keep the game beatable.

PC port is horrible, but you get Redbook Audio. Well, it was only ten dollars with a box.

Tried it on MAME, and she was incredibly beautiful, even to this day.

Last boss is a bitch, but I soon swooned her.

Really awesome game, I wonder how the emulation of it will be on that Taito collection.

Along with Garegga, this is my favourite shooter. Getting to stage 6 is no problem, but that's where it gets hard, real hard. The rank system is very simple, and you shouldn't really die to lower it, since you'll lose your precious lock-on lazers which'll lead to a lower score.

I thought it was Raystorm on the collection?

Anyways, yes, beautiful game, and amazingly fun. And the final boss is a bitch. So there.

It's included in Taito Legends (western release).

Of all the shmups I own for the Saturn, Layer Section gets the least play. The 16-bit graphics, the goofy soundtrack, the annoying lock-on system, the huge hitbox, the odd controls (is there some kind of auto-centering going on at certain moments?) with veering background... I'm very glad I didn't spend much on this game. Yes, it can be satisfying because it's not terribly hard, but it is terribly annoying how most of my deaths are caused by the oversized hitbox and strange controls. I don't begin to understand what other people like about this game. Perhaps I need to give it more time to let it grow on me. But the more I play it, the more the music grates...

Wow, this is probably one of the most ridiculous posts I've read recently. First off, in regards to the graphics, they're quite nice, nothing amazing, but get yourself an RGB cable and then come back and tell me about the graphics. Goofy soundtrack? You have no taste. Some of Zuntata's best work, the soundtrack is divine. The annoying lock-on system? You're on your own. One of the most brilliant shmup gameplay concepts ever devised. The large hitbox is part of the game and doesn't do anything to detract or enhance the game, unless of course you suck and then you probably would want a smaller hitbox. Controls are strange? Again, you're on your own. The controls are perfect and there is no auto-centering except a little at the beginning of level 2 when you get too close to the screen edge but there are no enemies around so what does it matter. Sorry, but your complaints are silly. Don't like the game, fine, but don't bash it for idiotic reasons.

I tried it on MAME. Great graphics, innovative gameplay, but bullshit challenge and an archaic hitbox not fit for this game. I hate it.

In fact I'm not too thrilled with Taito's games. Rather than make you learn from your mistakes, they make you die every 3 seconds even if you're an experienced shmupper.

indeed you are on your own on that one. This is one of the very best shmups ever invented. It's hard to find something that is so ... complete, in a sense that there is nearly nothing to improve on.

The only other shmup I've played that has this "complete package" feel is 19XX. And even that one pales compare to this.

9.5 / 10 in my book

Not quite on his own. I don't "hate" the game, especially seeing as I own it, but I personally don't consider it a favorite either. A landmark shmup? Certainly; the lock-on feature has been imitated and modified many times since then. The perfect shmup? I'm afraid such a thing doesn't exist to begin with, and certainly not here. It's got the trademark Taito dully-colored bullets, for one thing, plus the fact that you need to play it enough to know exactly when enemies and bullets "move up" from the background to the foreground, or else you'll wind up being killed from below a lot, when it looks like you should have lived. Then there's the rank system, which makes it inaccessible (or at least unbeatable) to most players, especially those not fond of (or not skilled enough to effectively use) "suicide" tactics; unless you've mastered the lock-on system enough to be able to rack up extra lives like clockwork, you'll run out of steam by the time you get a few stages in. It looks and sounds good, and it's not a "bad" game, certainly, but it's not the be-all, end-all of shmups, as some seem to think; it has a players' niche, the same as most any other shmup ever made. Nothing wrong with that, necessarily, but ragging on someone for not liking it (not that you've been doing that yourself, TGK, don't take this as an accusation or anything) is certainly unnecessary.

On an ending note, you can also get the thing pretty cheap (in the US, anyways), so it's not a bad buy either way.

Ah, no, I don't mind. I just think that that prof Ganson has probably overlooked some aspect of the game, and so didn't enjoy it. Since it does seem that a lot of people do, and I enjoyed it thoroughly after trying it as a skeptic to evaluate how much does it stand up to the hype.

Yes, this is a great game (but hectic at around level 5,6.) I bought it on a lark when I first got my Saturn, without knowing anything about it -- or reading the Shmups review. I was totally amazed by it, and it still is one of my favourite shooters.

However, Prof. Ganson should be left alone about the music -- Zuntata's stuff is quite weird and an acquired taste. I absolutely love the soundtrack to Layer Section (Level 3 having one of the best shmup tunes ever) and others like Darius II and Syvalion (on SNES), but some of their other game tunes are just too weird/boring for me. It's cool that they're so experimental, even if it doesn't work for me part of the time.

OK, sorry, my remarks on Layer Section were too strong. I was in a bad mood when I wrote them. On sober reflection I think at least one thing I said was off the mark. The control issues I mentioned don't have any impact on gameplay, so they really were not worth mentioning.

As for the music, I'm willing to allow that it might grow on me. There's just this one part in stage one that tends to annoy me, and I've let it influence my judgment about the soundtrack as a whole. I should know better than that, as I've often had the experience of coming to enjoy shmup music more as I get to know it better.

With respect to the graphics, my point is just that the game looks more like a Genesis than a Saturn shmup with respect to the level of detail, the number of sprites, and the artistic style. I assume this isn't a terribly controversial point, but it also doesn't count seriously against the game's quality. I guess I would say that the graphics are a bit underwhelming, not a big deal.

The real issue for me with the game is that I don't like having a huge ship unless I'm going to be compensated with some huge firepower. The lock-on system just makes me feel underequiped when I'm steering around such a boat. Sure, the lock-on system is innovative, but I prefer how it is implemented in other games.

And then there's the rank system...

This pretty much describes exactly why I don't care for this game. Lock-on is nice and all, but it feels like I'm spending more time killing things with lock-on than I am with my normal shot. The only series to ever pull this off for me are the Panzer Dragoon games, and those aren't shmups anyway. Aside from that, I'd rather have direct shots be my main weapon, not just what I rely on when I miss a few enemies who flew up from the background.

And yeah, the music isn't loved by all. I think it's pretty ass, and one of Zuntata's worst efforts.

A bit overrated, because it was released in the US! (I think)
It got butchered on my site didn't it. I guess it didn't live up to the hype/my expectations.

Argh, Taito redefined and set the standard for the use of graphical effects such as parallax, scaling and rotation with this game (1993, FFS!). Truly amazing IMO. Do play the game in TATE mode, otherwise some effects will be missing.

Yeah, I certainly wouldn't say it's too "weird" or "experimental" for me. Mostly it's just boring - and when it's not boring, it's annoying. Ugly melodies, bad sound choices, and really at odds with the game.

When I realized this game was originally from 1993, I got shocked.

I don't think there's many games from this year that could surpass it, in a technical point of view.

1993 was one of the best years for gaming in general, if not the BEST year.

I'm not a big fan of Layer Section (aka Galactic Attack, aka Rayforce). I can appreciate the game and understand why others like it, but it's been very much a miss for me. I've really wanted to like it - and have given it 20+ hours now but it's just not clicking. So I put it down and haven't touched it in 6 months. I normally don't care about graphics, but everything seems a overly large (especially your ship!) and pixelated in-game - not the best effort given the graphics quality of other Saturn shooters which are more visually appealing. Lock-ons are a great idea - but Sokyu does it much better. Rank system isn't as harsh as... say... Garegga, but it's still more than I care for (but I can overlook this if the rest of the game was stunning). The ship is floaty - if you move off-center and let go of the joystick, the ship drifts back to center slightly... this is a major no-no. And the level design just doesn't inspire (though I like how the ship moves through the layers of the atmosphere and eventually into the ground below). Of all the Ray-games, I prefer Raystorm but none are on my top-25 list.

Music, however, is top-notch. Zuntata is great.

Auto centering seem to be a "feature" of the Ray series. Personally I don't think it hampers rayforce, but it is absolutely annoying in Raycrisis, where you have to contend with changing perspective as well.

Ah, I can understand your complain with the huge ship.

But I guess I was an old-school shmupper who grew up on the NES and SNES, so I was shocked at DDP-style hit point, while feel totally at home with judging a sprite-sized hit box. I found that you can scrape just a little bit in Rayforce, but you shouldn't, always try to move out of the bullet spread entirely.

Most of the time, you can keep yourself from getting into a tight spot completely instead of trying to get out of a tight spot.

I can hit stage 5 reliably in 1 cred now, sometimes stage 6. Still trying to get used to the stage 5 boss
