Looking for a music video
Saw it on some music TV station a decade ago or so. The music was some generic drum & bass or trance, I think. Nothing that would've caught my attention whilst played on the radio. The video was almost certainly shot in Japan. A family had a celebration, somebody's birthday with a cake and candles and stuff. Not in a standalone house, rather in a block of flats. A woman (daughter?) in the bathroom beholds her teeth reflected in a mirror. Seems to have a problem with the looks of her teeth. There's clearly something wrong with her behaviour. The dad strikes a match (!) to light his cigarette and something (the match? the cake?) explodes. The rest of the video is a mighty explosion shot in slo-mo with all details, how the family gets blown up. The end is a dude watching the explosion from a playground near the block of flats, getting caught by the Japanese cops who perform one of their trademark subduing moves on the guy.
Just today this video reminded me of that one, but it's more of a coincidence than anything else. I still would like to watch that vid again.

I know that if you're not into electronic music then you probably don't know, but you've basically just described two extremes of the genre. One is really gay and the other really noisy.

Aye, aye, it's just that the air around me was oversaturated with both back in the day and it's not the music that caught my attention in this case.GaijinPunch wrote:I know that if you're not into electronic music then you probably don't know, but you've basically just described two extremes of the genre. Sometimes you are sure that the game you're searching for was a, say, vertically scrolling shooter, but it turns out to be a horizontally scrolling beat 'em up (it just happens to have THAT boss sprite stuck in your memory).
If that helps, around that time said TV channel used to air Smack My Bitch Up, some Tricky music video and a Massive Attack one, with mild references to intravenous heroin intake.

Re: Looking for a music video
dunno wot it is, but the video sounds like something an 'IDM' (an utterly pretentious term) act would use - someone like Squarepusher or Aphex Twin, also that could fit in with the 'Drum n Bass' bit...
Re: Looking for a music video
"Trance" is a pretty nondescript term - it can be both totally gay and anthemish, and it can be pretty heavy and noisy as well.
And "Drum 'n' Bass" has been abused so much it pretty much lost its meaning (I mean, come on, Pendulum?? Seriously?), so I don't see anything odd about combining those two terms.
And if DnB is a noisy extreme of the electronic music scene, I take it you've never heard breakcore, speedcore, rhythmic noise, or power electronics for that matter.
Actually, trance combined with DnB does sound kinda awesome, I just want to hear this music now.

yep Trance has been a completely dissolved term - while I LOVE (really) early trance (I.e. stuff on Secret Life Of Trance I - IV or early Harthouse compilations), I have no liking for the modern supersaw filled variety at all.Sumez wrote:"Trance" is a pretty nondescript term - it can be both totally gay and anthemish, and it can be pretty heavy and noisy as well.

DnB is another genre which has completely changed, it's origin (jungle/breakbeat hardcore) were tyring to make beats more complex etc., and hearing the crunchiness of the breakbeat samples in between the kick and snare added to this, now a lot of it is literally kick snare kick snare (just like Pendulum), and the 'break' beats are nowhere to be heard :/.
yeh breakcore etc. are definitely heavier than a lot of DnB, but I could understand thinking that some Breakcore/IDM type stuff was DnB if you weren't particularly 'into' the scenes, as chopped up Amen's do sound to most people very like DnB/Jungle.

Wow, you think Aphex Twin is IDM?Raytrace wrote:dunno wot it is, but the video sounds like something an 'IDM' (an utterly pretentious term) act would use - someone like Squarepusher or Aphex Twin, also that could fit in with the 'Drum n Bass' bit...
Yeah but they're hardly household names. Sure there are noisier sub-genres, but how often are you going to bump into them by accident? And if DnB is a noisy extreme of the electronic music scene, I take it you've never heard breakcore, speedcore, rhythmic noise, or power electronics for that matter

I dont see how it's not IDM...GaijinPunch wrote: Wow, you think Aphex Twin is IDM?

Aphex Twin - checkIntelligent dance music (commonly IDM or intelligent dance) is a term that describes an electronic music genre that emerged in the early 1990s.
Aphex Twin - checkStylistically, IDM tends to rely upon individualistic experimentation rather than on a particular set of musical characteristics.
Aphex Twin - checkespecially those appearing on a 1992 Warp Records compilation called Artificial Intelligence.
Oh...Usage of the term "Intelligent Dance Music" has been criticised by electronic musicians such as Aphex Twin

Re: Looking for a music video
First, I'd say that Aphex Twin is not really categorizable (like that word?). He does a wide variety of stuff. While most of his stuff is super creative, IDM is more identifiable. I'd say he's more electronic experimentation first and foremost, and falls into tons of sub-genres. That was kind of what I was getting at. (The 2nd Selected Ambient Works is dope). Lemme just ask this: have you ever tried to dance to more than a few of his tracks? I've just never seen his music as dance music... at all. But, I grew up in clubs, not concerts... always went to hear DJs, not performers.

Re: Looking for a music video
Come on, there are so many different definitions of IDM, it's difficult to tell what is. Aphex was around long before the IDM term was coined, but I think it fits well with his sound.
Autechre are often considered IDM as well (maybe even the innovators of the genre?), but they too were around before anyone decided to call them that. Their biggest sources of inspiration are Coil and Skinny Puppy.

pretty much yeah - or at least MASSIVELY influential on itGaijinPunch wrote:Wow, you think Aphex Twin is IDM?Raytrace wrote:dunno wot it is, but the video sounds like something an 'IDM' (an utterly pretentious term) act would use - someone like Squarepusher or Aphex Twin, also that could fit in with the 'Drum n Bass' bit...
Re: Looking for a music video
I thought the point of IDM was that you -don't- dance to it? I always thought it was an ironic term. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.GaijinPunch wrote:have you ever tried to dance to more than a few of his tracks? I've just never seen his music as dance music... at all.
Re: Looking for a music video
early Aphex Twin is kinda danceable I suppose - Didgeridoo used to always get played at raves (I have the R&S 12"
) - and if we consider Pac Man him - thats deffo danceable :p
Window Licker is I suppose danceable in a 5:30 AM sunday morning kinda way

Re: Looking for a music video
Most IDM I hear isn't dance music, obviously. Maybe swaying a bit, but dancing? Nah. I'd like to hear what GaijinPunch considers IDM, now.

Re: Looking for a music video
If you ever find this video please post here, I liked the premise.
Re: Looking for a music video
I wish the term "IDM" would just go away. Nobody that gets called that likes being called that. It was adapted from the name of some mailing list about electronic music. It was never meant to catch on or describe an entire genre.
