Afega = Psykio lite?

Post by FRO »

I've played 3 games in MAME by a company called Afega: Stagger 1, Red Hawk, and Sen Jin. I've noticed quite a few similarities to the early Psykio shmups (and especially to Aero Fighters), though the Afega shmups are much rougher and feel a little less professionally done. I notice the same type of fast bullet storms, though perhaps not quite as hectic as Psykio games, as well as a similar weapon system (i.e. basic "P" powerup, charge weapon, etc.) and ship selection.

Has anyone else noticed this? Does anyone know anything about Afega? I'd never heard of them until I played those 3 games.

Just looked at some screens and definitely looks more like Aero Fighters (bomb icons, country affiliation witht the characters?) than Psikyo. It was released two years after Sonic Wings Limited/Special. Red Hawk only a year after, so probably the guys from Video System.

Afega is a Korean outfit, and it doesn't look like any of these guys were involved in any Psikyo games (not done checking everything out though)

You can browse the credits and such at MAWS

It's funny, there's a Red Hawk cab in a train station in my area and I was always wondering about it. Not a very good game, in my opinion, but heck, it gets points for obscurity. I'd rather play on the Strikers III cab a bit up the road, though.
