Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
PS2 Ibara - I had been playing BL at the arcade for a long time, and wanted to bring the experience home. on PS2 the "arcade version" wrecks my shit, but arrange mode is nice. Oh - or maybe Mushi for X360. I was really pumped when that got released.
I recently bought an S-video cable for Saturn as well off ebay.. Perhaps we got it from the same seller? Is yours from retro_console_accessories? Interested to see if there's any improvement over the component cables I use now.

Futari for me. Those vids of Ultra mode Larsa and Spiritual Larsa were pretty much my first exposure to the genre outside of some awful Gradius and Thunder Force games so it was like a dream come true to finally play it.
Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
Souky.
I was very excited (read: angry) when I found out it doesn't work on US Saturns even with the region lock broken.

Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
I just purchased an XBOX 360 basically to play shmups and Bayonetta on. It's arriving within a few days with Deathsmiles, Espgaluda, and Mushihimesama. I'd say I'm pretty damn excited about this.
Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
Gradius Gaiden Baby! Coming in approximately 2-4 weeks from now. Can't wait to play this during my free time. I3

The day Castle Shikigami 3 got released here.
Yeah, I'm easy to please.
Okay, getting MUSHA boxed with instructions for $20 was pretty awesome.

As a kid the big ones were Lightening Force, Robo Alesta, and Silpheed.
Getting back into Shmups in the late 90's would be Mars Matrix (my first Bullet Hell), and finding Radiant Silvergun in my friends basement (which I bought from him for <$20).
Once I more or less became burnt out on gaming I decided to go all out and import a J360 & Deathsmiles and I've been a slave ever since! I would have been happy if two other Cave games had hit the 360, never would I have expected a flood of them.

DFK.
I also bought my J360 around the same time so needless to say I was excited.
I know people around here don't regard DFK that highly ...but me, I LOVE IT!

Battle Garegga, definitely. It had been my most wanted game for years and the idea that it was finally on its way to my house was kind of unreal.

purchasing a fresh PCB release is always a thrilling experience, sometimes more angst-filled than thrilling but nothing beats the euforia of finally collecting that package and putting your hands on some fresh cardboard.
if i had to pick one i think it would be "DDP DFK 1.0 LE" as the game just looked so awesome from all loc-tests and so forth...

I bought a 360 for Futari. Mushihihimesama on the PS2 really enchanted me to bullet hell and Cave scoring systems and the hype around Futari was awesome once the region-free was announced. Futari will continue to be awesome when I decide to get good at a mode besides Original

Not really a shmup exclusive purchase but the day I got my Mitsubishi AM-2752A RGB monitor and Dreamcast VGA box. Finally getting to play DC games the way they were meant to be played was really exciting, as my experience with CRTs was just old PC monitors and awful composite-driven TVs.
Otherwise, getting my first Cave title (360 Futari platinum hits) was pretty cool too.

Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
Most exciting must be my first EGRET II. Most exciting game title should be Ketsui for 360, but I know it will easily be forgotten once I have the cash for the PCB.

Yep it's the same seller. I've never used an S-Video cable so I'm interested in what it'll do.rancor wrote:I recently bought an S-video cable for Saturn as well off ebay.. Perhaps we got it from the same seller? Is yours from retro_console_accessories?

I've heard a lot that the PS2 ports of Ibara and Mushimimesama suck hard. Something to do with really blurry graphics.. Do you know if they look decent through component?rancor wrote:PS2 Ibara - I had been playing BL at the arcade for a long time, and wanted to bring the experience home. on PS2 the "arcade version" wrecks my shit, but arrange mode is nice. I just got a modded PS2 that will play anything. I need to figure out how to burn games and then I want to give Mushihimesama a whirl, unless it's just a waste of time.

Ibara on ps2 also has like 0% of the original slowdown.burgerkingdiamond wrote:I've heard a lot that the PS2 ports of Ibara and Mushimimesama suck hard. Something to do with really blurry graphics.. I think my favorite purchase was getting my japanese 360 with Ketsui, mostly because I didn't think it was gonna happen.
I was also pretty excited to get my hands on Battle Garegga and Batsugun on the Saturn, as I searched for them for quite a while.

Getting my candy cab, then hooking up the Jtag to it and being able to play all the 360 imports on it. AMAZING.
Also getting my Donpachi PCB and Raiden DX PCB.

Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
One of the most exciting purchases was when I ordered my first doujin game back in 2008 from Paletweb: Diadra Empty. To top it all, I was able to get it highly discounted but decided to order it via regular airmail. The envelope showed up a freaking saturday when I was leaving for a Uni course. Found it on the general table at the entrance of the building, I opened it right there and, bam, decided to stay home, lol. What a morning I had! Blasting the sound full volume and tormenting my neighbours.
Fast forward and my most exciting has to be when I got the Ether Vapor Remaster, RefRain and the plethora of C80 doujins. Revolver360 blew me away, RefRain has the sexiest package I've seen in a while and EV Remaster is all I could hope for an updated version of an already nice game. Plus I got Acceleration of Suguri 2 in the middle for multiplayer purposes.

NOW REACHES THE FATAL ATTRACTION BE DESCRIBED AS "HELLSINKER". DECIDE DESTINATION.

You lucky bastard. I was pretty excited when I found my hilariously destroyed copy for $25. Still works great, too!cj iwakura wrote:Okay, getting MUSHA boxed with instructions for $20 was pretty awesome.
Getting my copy of Battle Garegga from Moonwhistle was probably the most infuriating and wonderful experience ever. Moonwhistle was great and a perfect salesman; I, on the other hand, spent four hours the night after it arrived messing up a Saturn region mod. I would have had the game sooner, but since I was out when it arrived and I was required to sign for it I had to go to the post office on a lunch break. So my Saturn is flipping its shit, I'm losing sleep, and I have to drive five or so miles through heavy lunch rush traffic to get my incredibly expensive game. I get to the post office after a massive detour, get my package, go back to work and find out I screwed up my punch on the way out. So then I had to send an e-mail to get my punch corrected. Since my escapade took a good hour and a half, of course, I had to stay at work longer. Then I got home, beat tired, with a Saturn that can't read any discs and what was at the time my most expensive game purchase. I opened the Saturn one more time, realized I had soldered two wires to the wrong jumper, switched them, and got to play my game in glorious bitchin' S-Video.
I still suck at the game though.
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

Buying a super gun after pondering about it for two years and having Ibara, my first PCB, arriving two days later from the States. I stared at the demonstration mode for several minutes before playing the first credit.

I remember counting down the days until Mushihimesama (PS2) came out, it felt like forever.
Ketsui port coming was pretty amazing, in before the emulation.

Hard call! Two things come to mind:
1. Way back, a bit before I found this forum, I got a Jap Saturn, Souky, and Shienryu. Good times! I don't get quite as excited about gaming anymore. It was all so new and different then. Probably the only things that come really close are not shmup related: (i) getting an Xbox + Project Gotham Racing-- my first gaming console since I was a kid and had an Atari 2600; (ii) getting into Fire Emblem for the DS and realizing I love srpgs.
As far as shmups go, the only thing that comes close to that Saturn experience is
2. Finally getting a supergun + a proper monitor setup, with Alien Soldier's help. That was pretty amazing!
