Decent 360 pads?
With DFK coming out soon, I've come across a problem - the godawful 360 pad.
Some claim that it's good/decent and some find it terrible...unfortunately I'm in the latter group. Already sanded it down and tried several things but nothing made it even acceptable.
The second problem, I can't import at all and I don't have enough $ for stuff like arcade sticks anyways.
Are there even any 3rd party pads like psx/2 had a ton?
The only one I found is the madcatz fightpad, but it still costs around 40$ here and I've seen mostly mixed opinions - then again I find the ps2 pad pretty good while the people who like the 360 one call it crap.
Both the drum kit pad and hori ex turbo look decent but unfortunately they are impossible to find here...and Saturn pads are completely out of question.
So, am I S.O.L. or are there any other options? Why can't I just use my 10$ tesco keyboard?

Are you in the US ?
The (really nice) drum kit controller is available for $8.99 on the Amazon marketplace:

Nope, in a shitty country in the middle of Europe.
Seen it, looked it up, found nothing here.

Re: Decent 360 pads?
really, I'm in Germany and I got mine from ebay.de for about 7 EUR a piece.
There are two on eBAy.de right now, both at 1 EUR and both ending tomorrow night. Shall I try and get one for you ? If I toss the drums and only send you the controller, it's quite affordable. Think about it.

Re: Decent 360 pads?
Well the problem is that I can't pay online for anything so ebay is out of question

Re: Decent 360 pads?
Are there prepaid cash cards available in your area, that can be used on online sites? Not buying from the internet these days is kinda a big hindrance!
edit: shit, did I reply to something from three pages ago

Re: Decent 360 pads?
Some debit cards offered by banks are capable of online purchases. I'd inquire with a bank if I were you, Bananamatic, to see if it is offered. Certainly doesn't hurt to ask. Yep, pre-paid credit cards are quite easy to find these days as well, although if buying them from a retailer, they are required to accept cash only & no other alternative payment option to purchase them.

I swear by the mad catz street fighter pad. It is second to a saturn controller.

They got that one over here but I've heard some people say that it's barely better than the 360 one.

Re: Decent 360 pads?
Were there two versions of the 360 pads? I've heard others complaining about it, but I got one not too long ago and I really don't understand, I can't find any major faults with it.
Re: Decent 360 pads?
The recently released S version of Microsoft's 360 pad has a D-pad that transforms into a traditional cross pad. Everyone says it's a huge improvement, but it's $60.
Hori has some high-end 360 pads, but I think they're made with FPSes in mind.
The Madcatz SFIV pad apparently has trouble registering diagonals.
You really should just save up for a stick, I think.

Try pressing up/forward or down/back (diagonals )with the default 360 d-pad while playing a shmup. I bet your ship won't navigate where you want it to.
You really can't make fine, precise movements with the thing.
I recently purchased the silver limited edition 360 controller that has the transforming pad. I must say, it's a slight improvement, but really nothing notable at all. It still has a shit design and is quite inaccurate, for the most part.

Re: Decent 360 pads?
Oh don't get me wrong, I would never use a pad for any arcade gaming. But I frequently use a 360 pad for PC gaming. Just finished a solid Gears of War session in fact.PinkSweets wrote:Really?shmuppyLove wrote:Were there two versions of the 360 pads? I don't care how good a dpad is, it could never replace a joystick for me.
Re: Decent 360 pads?
yeah while I wouldn't use it for shmups I have a Madcatz SFIV 360 and PS3 pad, and they are fairly close to the Saturn pad they're modelled on, a little mushy but if blisters on your thumb are and indicator of genuine SEGA padness - they're definitely up there :p
you should be able to get one of the Madcatz pads fairly cheap because they released a new version for SSFIV I think (and probably for the next iteration too)...
I have to use pads for 2D fighters cause much as I wish I could use my stick well enough for them, I just cant reliably and constantly get dragonpunch style movements on a stick

If only there was a way to graft the old DS d-pad onto a 360 one.

If there only was a way to play 360 shmups with a keyboard

yeah I think the thing is barely usable for weapon selection duties even (not that FPSs should be played with a gamepadPinkSweets wrote:Really?shmuppyLove wrote:Were there two versions of the 360 pads? So can you guys decide on one?
from what I played, keyboard>ps2pad>cheap steering wheel dpad>360 pad>steering wheel
Maybe I should just buy a steering wheel with a better dpad.

I used to play a lot of Lost Planet on 360 which requires the d-pad for certain actions. With the sniper rifle equipped, pressing "up" allows you to scope in. Let's just say I'd have to press "up" on the pad a minimum of 3 times to finally scope in or out.

yeah I think it's safe to say that a broken Quickshot II would be more precise than the mushy lump of crud called the 360's d-pad :p

Re: Decent 360 pads?
Ah here's what I was thinking of:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_controller#Transforming_D-Pad_controllers
I thought there were two versions of the standard white controller, but apparently not.
Seriously I do almost all my PC gaming with my Xbox controller now. Used to use my trusty old Logitech Dual Action gamepad, but then Microsoft screwed everyone by switching from DirectInput to XInput. Except for the odd fast, twitchy precision FPS games, all my driving, 3rd person, action/rpg etc games I play with the pad now, and I really don't find anything to complain about. Plus it's far more comfortable for long sessions. And it's perfect for console emulation too.
Just not for shmups or fighters, obviously.

I like this controller quite a bit for Castlevania HD, but I still play Shooting games on my Hyper Stick Pro or my TE:S.shmuppyLove wrote:Ah here's what I was thinking of:

Re: Decent 360 pads?
surely as you have the PC connected to a PC which no doubt has a mouse and keyboard attached to it, you wouldn't even consider the pad for those duties? :pshmuppyLove wrote:Ah here's what I was thinking of:

Re: Decent 360 pads?
In his defense, most PC releases nowadays are (sadly) designed with consoles in mind, and some games will not even include keyboard configurations--they'll assume you're using a 360 controller anyway. I would argue that third-person shooters are ideal with a dualstick pad.
Re: Decent 360 pads?
yeh in 3rd person I do agree that it can make sense, in the end though I still ended up playing ME 1 and 2 on PC even though I had the 360 Mass Effect 1.Estebang wrote:In his defense, most PC releases nowadays are (sadly) designed with consoles in mind, and some games will not even include keyboard configurations--they'll assume you're using a 360 controller anyway. yeah no I was trolling a bit there and it is fair to say that unfortunately a lot of FPSs do seem to be designed with 'controller' as default
I just never thought I'd see the day that:
a) people would actually use the pad on a PC to play FPS
b) id Software would release a game with almost no graphical options! (first build of R@ge)
oh wells [/grumpyoldman]
Re: Decent 360 pads?
Tried the Rock Band controller, it's pretty good but the D pad is convex which makes it far less good than it would be if flat or slightly concave. It's tied with the old Hori Ex Turbo I guess.
