RAGE
Any one played this?
All the big review sites say it's dope but that means nothing to me. I much rather ask around here where people have similar taste in games.
Normally I would pass on a title like this but I'm a DOOM fan and this is made by iD Software. I feel almost obligated to buy it just to make sure DOOM 4 comes out. This is probably iD just testing the market before putting the final tweaks on DOOM 4.

Re: RAGE
I did a couple of looks on Youtube, there are a lot of people complaining about having terrible texture switching [it only loads what is on screen, and swaps that out once it goes offscreen], and then a handful with perfectly fine textures.
I'd love to play this to see if iD still has that magic, I just don't have any quality PC hardware, and I hate playing FPSes with a controller [also, my distinct lack of a 360/PS3].

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Re: RAGE
Is anyone surprised?
I vaguely remember Doom 3 (was that the last one?) had some very severe problems initially.
And does anyone remember Crysis? That was 4 years ago, I still don't think my PC will play it properly.

Just because you mentioned Doom 3, I have to bring this up: http://www.firingsquad.com/media/gallery_index.asp/244shmuppyLove wrote:Is anyone surprised?

Doom 3 on a Voodoo 2.
And honestly, I'm not surprised that there are issues -- Rage is really pushing things -- when I saw the video of it without it having severe texture loading pop-in, the game looked damn gorgeous. Brown, yes, but still well-lit and high-poly.

Re: RAGE
Wow, those texture glitches look pretty terrible. Is that on the console port too? :S
Re: RAGE
Yeah, I remember a friend had a pretty reasonable system at the time Doom 3 game out (1.5 ghz CPU, new graphics card, new RAM upgrade), and it still chugged at 10-15fps most of the time. I wish developers would target hardware that already exists and do the fine-tuning needed to get the games to run flawlessly instead.shmuppyLove wrote:Is anyone surprised?

Then again, lots of good memories of playing Doom 1 on my 386 DX/40 at half detail. But that was at least an excellent game.
Humans, think about what you have done
Re: RAGE
Aside from the graphics the game isnt half bad according to my friend give it a few hours and it begins to shine. Its the usual go to person get quest complete quest then return to person however I read that you cannot back track in this game so once you leave an area and dont complete quests there your pretty much done with that quest and cannot complete it.

I have zero confidence in the ability of anyone who worked on Doom 3 to make a good game.null1024 wrote:I'd love to play this to see if iD still has that magic

Maybe it wasn't Doom 3 I was thinking of? What was the one that was super duper dark and you had to use a flashlight all the time?null1024 wrote:Just because you mentioned Doom 3, I have to bring this up: http://www.firingsquad.com/media/gallery_index.asp/244

I remember reading an interview with iD and they stated that Doom 4 would take nearly 50 discs in it's current state to be released. They didn't specify if they meant blu-ray, dual layer, or just regular DVDs but even given just DVDs, a 200GB game is insane.

Re: RAGE
It may well be 50 Blu-rays. 2500 GB (2.5 TB) anyone? John Carmack had said an uncompressed build of Rage was 1 TB in size, so this sounds likely. Watch Steam ask for 6 DVDs while installing Doom 4, and I guess we'll probably have to shell out 50 GB this time.Casper<3 wrote:louisg wrote: I wish developers would target hardware that already exists and do the fine-tuning needed to get the games to run flawlessly instead.

Re: RAGE
That's Doom 3 -- the only reason it works on a Voodoo 2 is because they had to disable the lighting [or simulated lack thereof :3], which is the most intensive part of Doom 3's graphics.shmuppyLove wrote:Maybe it wasn't Doom 3 I was thinking of? I really don't know id anymore. They still have genius coder Carmack, but the people who made their games -- John Romero, American McGee, Sandy Petersen, Tom Hall -- have all long left. And that Tim Willits moron, oh boy... "Mac users don't buy games, they buy Angry Birds." Yeah, asshole, tell that to Aspyr, Ambrosia, Blizzard, Bioware, Electronic Arts, Feral, Freeverse, Frictional, Gameloft, Macsoft, Pangea, Popcap, Spiderweb, Ubisoft, Valve...

Re: RAGE
The graphics look mighty good to me. Character designs, colours and all. Also, 60 fps on consoles.
Not all that brown either - I see many other colours on YouTube vids. Unfortunately some of the animations have the hand-made (and not very well at that) flavour known from Doom 3. I have never seen 3D animations made like that looking better than good old motion capture.

Re: RAGE
I have been playing this yesterday for an hour or so , looks very pretty and runs butter smooth on the 360 although I don't think there is any AA like Gears 3 but that doesn't bother me .
Game play wise it's a FPS with RPG elements , can't really judge the game play after an hour but it looks and feels good !

Would be nice if they would release a playable PC demo. I don't want to buy this only to have it run like shit.

Let's not forget Microsoft/Bungie themselves who ported Halo for PC to the Mac, and also YoYoGames.Stormwatch wrote:I really don't know id anymore. Re: RAGE
Demos seem to come out after the game release these days ... sounds backwards, but I guess the thinking is to get the game out as quickly as possible, and then work on the demo afterwards.Austin wrote:Would be nice if they would release a playable PC demo. Re: RAGE
I hope that is the case. Up to this point I have read they are not planning a demo.shmuppyLove wrote:Demos seem to come out after the game release these days ... sounds backwards, but I guess the thinking is to get the game out as quickly as possible, and then work on the demo afterwards.Austin wrote:Would be nice if they would release a playable PC demo. Anyone trying the USA one on JPN Xbox 360? Contradictory info at Play-Asia on region compatibility. Store says one thing, comments another.
The JPN version probably has English options, but I'd rather support local retailers if possible.
