Why would there be a tate mode? What purpose would it serve?

The original arcade version of Noa has a horizontaly aligned screen. At home you have the big wallpaper borders on a 16:9 display, then within those are some orange borders with the game logo etc, then within those is the game itself. In the end the area this game is displayed in is closer to being square than anything else. Unusual.

I think I heard some people playing in 4:3 had some issues with this one.
Still, sick game. Classic mode is excellent

The DC version has tate mode.

I think the DC only has a port of Radilgy, which is a vert with tate mode, not Radilgy NOA, which is a NAOMI game.
