Opinions sought on Tempest 2000 ports....

Post by dave4shmups »

From what I've read, in terms of quality, the games go like this:

1) Jaguar version

2) Saturn version

3) PS1 Tempest X3

Is this more or less pretty accurate? Because I have a Saturn, and have no plans to get a Jaguar, so I'd like to get the Saturn version if it's decent.

It's OK, methinks.
...and suddenly, a very freaky wormhole opened, and 4 3-foot tall market analysts fell out...

I can't compare them for you as I only own the Saturn rev of Tempest 2000 but I can say that it's very well done on the Saturn and one heck of a fun game!

The PC version is also nice, and the Windows version actually still works in modern systems - once you get it installed that is.

WINDOWS version? I've only found a DOS version I have to run in DOSBox. Where could I find the windows version, or is it not abandonware/okay to post here? If that's the case, forget I asked.

The Jag version is the only one I've played, but man, does it rock! Once you pick it up, it's hard to put down the controller until at least an hour later.

The Saturn one is the best one outside of the Jag. It actually plays a tad faster with a smoother framerate, and compared to the PS game your particle laser actually seems to cut spikes down more like in the Jag version.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

I haven't played Tempest 2000 since selling my Jaguar back early 1995.

I always assumed the other ports would suck by comparison, but it sounds like the Saturn rev might be worth picking up. I don't plan on ever buying a Jaguar again; I only ever had two games I considered worthwhile: Tempest 2000 and AvP. I never really got 'into' the others that were considered great (Cybermorph, Iron Soldier, ummm...).

Jaguar version is best. (only oen with melt-o-vision)
Second best is MS-DOS version.
third best is Wndows 9x version (mistake is all rings in bonus are full value no matter how far from centr you hit it. otherwise it's awesome
also 3rd best is saturn version, which is parted properly.
WORST is playstatioon "2000" mode. BIG mistake in the old mode (spikes are too hard to kill)

I do really enjoy the windoze one because of it's hi-rez support, een though they screewed up the bonus rounds a bit.

I own Tempest X for the PSX and its good. It even has Tempest 2000 included in it.

All others, I'm not sure about.
