Music you wish they'd put in a Shmup
Music you wish they'd put in a Shmup
I personally am a big techno/J-Pop/Mecha/Shmup fan, so I tend to like anything they put in most recent shmups. Except that Atmospheric junk they put in R-Type Final (stage 4, Anyone?) That stuff is too quiet for me.
Anyway, some possible candidates for (or composing for <3) shmups.
Two-Mix/Koh Otani (of Gundam Wing fame)
DJ-Tripper (did an awesome mix for Eurythmics Sweet Dreams)
Disco Dan (he's done some excellent Megaman remixes at www.ocremix.org, particularly Megaman 2 'Heat Man Rapid Fire')
And I think we need more Top Gun-esque Heavy Metal music in shmups too.
And, on a side note, I do believe it's quite possible to turn your fav music tracks to .ogg and actually put them in the PC Shmups out there in some cases.

The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

I wish there were shmups with music that actually related to the story. Ikaruga's music seems to fit the story, but the whole "god-like"-ness of it scares me.
As for music, Raiden DX already has the best music. I'd like to see Rammstein/Dimmu Borgir for a "boss" sequence, and possibly Ayreon/Nightwish for others.

I like hearing anything a bit unusual in a shmup, really...in Game Paradise 2, for instance, even though I don't like the game itself that much, I fondly remember one point where you fight a certain boss with a full theme song, vocals included, playing in the background, in true "cheesy old robot anime" fashion; offhand I can't think of any other shmup (besides its predecessor) that has vocals going in the background of the music (aside from a choral "ahhhh" or something like that). Parodius's wonky renderings of classical (and everything else) are some of my favorites too, I'd love more stuff like that.
On a more "serious note" I also like slower-paced stuff in moderation; Gradius Gaiden's stage 5 track, with the acid-trip style sitar and whatnot, is one of my favorites. Don't know if I could take a whole game of it though.

Compile and Technosoft was almost always right on point with their music. SNK's products (shmups) are usually of high quality. I prefer the techno/electronica stuff to rock music or atmospheric stuff.
Music that has a sense of "urgency" is very cool. For example, Giant ship stage of R-Type Final has a sense of urgency I'm talking about, to me that fits perfect.

What I don't like in many shmups is, that all the level themes in one game are really alike. I think it would be better if each level would have some other kind of atmosphere and so has to be the music. From fast and heavy Rock, to creepy & quiet, to dramatic symphonic & a bit of experimental stuff of music.
I personally wouldn't like to listen to vacalized themes (except in a fun shmup) or any techno music. Though I wouldn't mind if the music had some electronic roots, but please no pure techno.
But I'd love to hear some instrumental "Nightwish" music, I think it would suit perfect for a dramatic final stage. And maybe for a stage with a strange but somehow beautiful landscape could have some "Panzer Dragoon" music or something else unusual. But you could put many different types of music in the game, it just have to appeal to the level and to the feeling of the game. (Meaning a middle Age shmup with techno music would be feeling really wrong)
Well, but that's only my humble opinion.

Psytrance, in particular something from Logic Bomb.

I think this kind of music should be perfect for a space shmup.

Good call on Rush.Vexorg wrote:The one group that comes to mind that I'd want to have doing shmup music would probably be Rush. They've got a number of songs that sound like they'd be right at home in a shmup, provided you dump most of the lyrics.
A song I'd love to shmup to is "Sinner Man" by Nina Simone, or at least the instrumental percussion and piano section.

A shmup with Tangerine Dream music may well be a good thing.
Their "Choronzon" is sort of a mid-tempo piece- a little atmospheric and suspenseful, yet still maintaining a feeling of urgency with a strong beat. It's the kind that could fit in either an R-Type or a DDPDOJ style manic shooter- in fact, it seems like it may have inspired DOJ's stage 4 theme a bit.

Hey thanksJon wrote:DJ Shadows faster songs would worth work VERY well with a shmup. Definitely a good call.SheSaidDutch wrote:

White Zombie would be funny
I think Rob Zombies video game soundtrack contribution quota was filled out a long time ago. No more please!

btw what games have Rob's music been featured in?
I'm not a fan but White Zombie normally makes me grin.
The Bassist from White Zombie was fine though

My Trying Not To
I guess I was refering more to his solo stuff than his old band. That wretched song Dragula seems like it was in at least a dozen games during the late ninties.SheSaidDutch wrote:Hey thanksJon wrote:DJ Shadows faster songs would worth work VERY well with a shmup. Discordance Axis. Watching the video for their song Ikaruga makes me wish Cave would have hired them to do the DOJ soundtrack. The Venetian Snares or Xanopticon would be great too.
Feedback will set you free.

Naughty Dog used White Zombie for the soundtrack for the walking crapfest that is Way of the Warrior.Jon wrote:

Somebody should take a Grand Theft Auto approach to Shmups so that you can change the music on the fly based on your tastes or whatever...lol

A lot of the Chris Huelsbeck stuff is similar to Tangerine Dream's stuff.gameoverDude wrote:A shmup with Tangerine Dream music may well be a good thing.

Imagine the mix and match possibilities...pop in a "hardcore" shmup like RSG or Garegga, and then change the music to something from Parodius!Andi wrote:That's a good idea. The more customization, the better. Hell, why can't you import your own music?

I dub thee Franken-shmup!
