Chiptune thread

Post by Udderdude »

So I just finished listening to pretty much everything here http://www.iimusic.net/

Figured I'd put together a list of all the chiptune I've got and like listening to.

My collection is still pretty small, so feel free to reply with more.

(Please try and keep it to 'pure' chiptune only, no real instruments in use)

By the way, most of the other originals here can be found here http://ubiktune.org/releases

Oh cool, disasterpeace. I think that guy comes to a local game dev meetup.

Here's some of the stuff I really like:

Jazzcat - Electric City
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePmWp1e9RM0

Hein Holt: Ghosttrackers, Booty's Club Tonic, Chill Addiction, Can U C A 8580, others. He's done some very interesting stuff, but I can't recall the names of them all. He must be one of the best modern chiptrackers: excellent combination of chip technique, sound design, exploring new ideas, and composition.
http://www.lemon64.com/music/browse.php?dir=491

Maniacs of Noise: They just came together to release a 20 minute chipfunk track. No, not composed in 20 minutes, 20 minutes long. It's good, and it's on Soundcloud.

Zabutom's album was pretty freakin' sweet too :)

I also like whoever is doing the compositions for Booze Design. On multiple occasions, they've had some really excellent chiptunes. Check them out on youtube.

This guy is good too: https://8bc.org/members/ast0r/ .. he was also on Kind of Bloop, which, if you haven't heard it yet, you should.

EDIT: (and shameless plug): here's the last thing I finished which is beepy in that classical chiptune kind of way: http://soundcloud.com/extentofthejam/midi-murder-box

Zeta Force is the latest addition to my Ipod Nano. I think Final Blast and level 2 are some of the best tracks in the album.

Oh cool, a chiptune thread :D

Here are some artists that I think warrant attention.

A.M.U (Nanoloop)
USK (LSDJ, Nanoloop. The undisputed king of chiptune)
Sabrepulse (LSDJ, sometimes. Listen to Turbo City for his most pure chiptune album)
Rugar (Famitracker? Absolutely amazing)
Salumi
Amananguchi
Hexideci (Octomed)
YMCK
MARU (LSDJ)
DJ Scotch Egg (Nanoloop)
Germlin/Joe Germlin (not really pure chiptune, but uses a lot of plugins)
Dong (PC-98)
KPLECRAFT
Flanboy (Nanoloop)
Bitshifter (LSDJ)

Oh god. That'll do for now. I made chiptunes a few years back. Played live a few times, but it kind of fizzled out. Really want to start up again :(

Both of Anamanaguchi's albums are freaking amazing. The first one, "Dawn Metropolis" is free. Their OST for Scott Pilgrim: the Game is awesome too.

Edit: Oh, didn't notice the "real instrument" clause. Well, listen to them anyway. 8)

Jon introduced me to YMCK, and on my last trip to Japan, I picked up their "Family Genesis" album. I also got 8-Bit Project's "Familiar Computing World" which is fantastic. Originalz told me about that artist.

A few years back, I read a review of a Kraftwerk tribute album in Wired Magazine called 8-Bit Operators. One of the tracks was done by our very own Nullsleep (I don't know if he still posts on this forum anymore). It's a great album, but the final track is absolutely terrible.

I also really like FantomenK, the guy who's music is always featured in the Keith Apicary videos.

I have to vouch for A Suffusion of Yellow, AKA Dahgrow, his stuff is great. http://trebledeathsystem.com/releases/20

I'd also plug my stuff, but I won't.

Also, OP: clarify "pure"? As it, real hardware only?
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Naw man, do it!

Also, I saw WizWars perform last night. If anyone here likes really loud dance-oriented chip music, he's worth checking out.

Guys, if you've got new stuff to plug, it would be better if it went in the music production thread instead. http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=33087

I kind of intended this thread to be for other people's music .. sorry for the confusion!

I went back through the Hein Holt stuff and a few more I wanted to recommend were Fitch's Seduction, Lick a Guitar, Lotus, and Khanville Blues. Oh hell, just get all of them.

Good link (iimusic.net)

I will absolutely groove out on this most of the day tomorrow.

On the weekends w/o meetups I have my own personal game day -- now I have some loud music to blare in the background just like Cody!
